Denise Rich is best known for being the ex-wife of Marc Rich. He is the billionaire tax evader and fugitive whom President Bill Clinton pardoned on his way out of office. Now the former Mrs. Rich has found her own way to avoid paying what President Obama might call her fair share, renouncing her US citizenship. According to Fox:
Denise Rich was born in Worcester, Massachusetts but has Austrian citizenship through her deceased father, a lawyer who represented her in a recent lawsuit told Reuters, adding she was making the move “so that she can be closer to her family and to Peter Cervinka, her long-time partner.”
Cervinka is an Austrian national, but his main residence is London.
Austria gives tax breaks to citizens who spend half the year abroad, Reuters reports.

Jeez, what a stupid woman! She shoulda emulated Romney and just stashed her money abroad.
Don’t be stupid.
As a US citizen, Romney has to pay US taxes regardless where he stashes his after-tax money. The US is the only country in the world that imposes worldwide taxes on its citizens.
By giving up her citizenship, the very rich Mrs. Rich never has to pay US taxes for the money she makes outside the US. Of course, she has to pay an exit-tax on all her assets to exit the US Citizenship, else she’ll be evading taxes and has to be pardoned by the current WH occupant after a sizable campaign contribution. She pays more for exiting the US than the Russian Jews paid for exiting the Soviet Union.
Can I question her patriotism?
No, unless you question her patriotism to Austria.
Sure anyone can question her patriotism. It is not a court of law.
Maybe she got confused and thinks that Obama means her when he keeps talking about taxing “The Rich”. It is pretty rich that her last name is Rich.
In my university days, the local Communist Party candidate had as her primary campaign slogan “Make the Rich Pay!”. To her, all that was required was to bleed the rich dry to pay for every possible social program and Utopia would be at hand. Of course she was careful to avoid pointing out that “the rich” would have to be defined as anyone who didn’t live naked under a bridge in order to raise enough money.
I find it interesting that the Democratic Party has much the same philosophy AND the same blind spot about what that philosophy means. Coincidence? I doubt it….
The Democratic Party has no such philosophy.
Their “soak the rich” slogan nets them the votes, power and wealth. Their rich get back much more than they pay out: e.g Solyndra’s Kaiser netted $535 millions of taxpayers’ money, Soros’ Petrobra netted $20 billion, Pelosi’s brother-in-law netted 3/4 bil… If they had not soaked the rich, they would not be elected, and would not have the power and taxpayers’ money to repay their rich supporters and guarantee their own riches in and out of office.
There are the Rich who pay higher taxes, and the Democratic Rich who get paid for with other peole’s higher taxes.
Someone in New Media needs to follow up and see whether she got purged from the voting rolls…in *all* the US locations she owns property.
I don’t know this woman Rich from a hole in the ground. But, she’s got maybe a few things going for her if she’s divorced from Mark Rich. Right? That is, if she initiated the divorce and made sure it occurred.
Look, I don’t begrudge anyone who is super rich who bails on the U.S.A. If the super rich or just mildly rich want to head for what they believe to be greener pastures in Monaco, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, etc., let them go.
See, in this modern world of the Net, we all learn about it.
Wait til the first big name NBA superstar of the last 25 years bails. Or a mega producer from Hollywood. Or a Kennedy. A Rockefeller.
Oh…they will. For sure. And then that speaks to the rest of stupid America what those of us who pay attention know: You can only tax people so much. Slick lawyers can only protect with loopholes for so much — and then no more.
Not only will the IRS and the Fed bureaucrats be fuming along with the lifelong politicians as those with deep pockets flee America, so too will be normal American families making under $60,000 who are also being annually fleeced by national, state, and local governments. Sales taxes. Property taxes. Extra hotel stay taxes. Car/boat registration taxes. Fishing license taxes and on and on and on.
Let these big name, VIP Richy Riches flee America and take up citizenship elsewhere. Every time they do it will keep the overtaxation story up front center in U.S. news/media headlines.
Just wait — a bigtime Hollywood star will be trying to quietly depart America for Chilean, Panamanian or Trinidad and Tobago citizenship — even before November 6th.
Exploit these moments. Exploit every one of them.
Ms. Rich is taking the lefties slogan to heart: “If a Republican is elected president, I’ll leave the US!”
As the Titanic of this administration sinks, Ms. Rich is just making sure she gets on a first class lifeboat.
