A fight is brewing over Virginia’s decision to give the Washington Redskins $6.5 million in “incentives” to move training camp to Richmond. The Washington Post:
Virginia’s top legislative budget-writing and oversight panel questioned Gov. Bob McDonnell’s administration on Monday for brokering $6.5 million in incentives to keep the Washington Redskins’ headquarters and training facilities in the state.
Republicans and Democrats grilled senior administration officials for an hour Monday, asking repeatedly and without success that they validate claims that the wealthy team would leave its massive Loudoun County complex without the incentives.
The Redskins are owned by the wildly unpopular Daniel Snyder. (The reasons he is unpopular are too numerous to list here, click this A to Z guide for more.) They currently have their training facilities and offices in Ashburn, Virginia. The headquarters being housed in Virginia facilitates assaults on residents of the Commonwealth by Redskins such as Albert Haynesworth.
Though unpopular, Snyder is a savvy dealer. And it looks like he took Virginia for a ride. There was next to zero chance the Redskins were going to leave the Ashburn facility. But the mere threat seems to have produced a $6.5 million dollar handout from the hardworking citizens of Virginia to a billionaire NFL owner. Snyder’s bluff worked.
Whatever his faults, Snyder looks like an angel of charity and the soul of civic-mindedness compared to Arthur Blank.
Sounds like that paragon of virtue, Jed York, who managed to convince the City of Santa Clara to pick $4,000 out of my pocket.
I thought it would be to ditch the incredibly racist logo which has saddened so many lives. They can change it to a Dagwood Bumstead logo and I’ll like it. Go Whiteskins. Maybe CAIR should bid for a Muslim logo to improve their image and seem like one of the guys. It’s been a long time since Rudy Valentino. Then they could have real rivalry with “America’s Team.” Go Caliphinators.
They should change the name of the team to the Washington Cherokees and hire Elizabeth warren to be the mascot.
Q. Why are Virginia Taxpayers Giving the Washington Redskins $6 Million?
A. Because the Redskins didn’t ask for $7 million.
Am I to believe that the Redskins would abandon the several hundred acre facility in Ashburn with its four football fields, advance sports medicine capabilites and all of the investment made for $6Million? Am I also to believe that the highly compensated players and coaches will want to move to either DC or MD, who both have confiscatory tax rates?
Snyder bullied. McDonnell caved.
Perhaps it has something to do with young coddled extremely well paid athletes not being able to get out of their beds and show up for training on time while they are staying in their own McMansion….Lets fork over $6.5M so that they can train in a structured campus environment, another liberal “teachable moment” except the taxpayers are the folks that are getting schooled. I suggest that Danny boy now make the complete Ashburn facility available to any HS or college athletic department for their use on a rotational basis while the professionals are in Richmond on our dime.
Uhh, is this Gov. Bob McDonnell up for reelection and needs funds or just elected and received funds from Snyder for his campaign?
