Cheryl Bormann of Cook County, IL represents accused al Qaeda thug Walid bin Attash for his military tribunal at Gitmo. She is not Muslim in her beliefs, but out of “respect,” is becoming one on the outside.
A female defense attorney, who is not Muslim, wore the traditional Islamic hijab to the military court staging the trial of five Guantanamo Bay prisoners accused of the September 11 attacks yesterday.
Cheryl Bormann, 52, who represents Walid bin Attash, said that her client had demanded she wear the clothing and insisted that other women at the hearing also wear ‘appropriate’ clothes out of respect for his religion.
“Respect” usually describes something earned, and in the best cases is mutual. Attash is accused of taking part in the mass murders of 9-11. Among other things, that was a very disrespectful thing to do.
If Bormann wants to kowtow to her client’s ridiculous demands and go sharia, that’s her business. But she isn’t stopping with her own mode of dress.
She asked that other women follow her example so that the defendants do not have to avert their eyes ‘for fear of committing a sin under their faith’, according to Fox News.
They have an interesting view of sin.
The lawyer’s decision was one of the less controversial moments during Saturday’s hearing where at times the accused openly defied the court.
Am I being insensitive to suggest that some woman should show up to the trial in a beach volleyball bikini? I denounce myself for the thought.
These trials, by the way, are the trials Eric Holder tried and tried again to have under civilian law in the heart of New York.
