I thought I might add a little perspective to the debate about contraception.
Accepting for the sake of argument that Sandra Fluke’s assertion that birth control costs her and her friends $1,000 a year, that’s about $83.33 per month or $2.74 a day — less than the price of a cup of Starbucks coffee, which would seem reasonable to avoid the much higher cost of a pregnancy.
Now, the average family buys about 1,100 gallons of gasoline a year. At $4 per gallon that comes to $4,400 a year, $366.67 a month or $12.05 a day.
Now the median household income in the United States is just over $46,000 a year. So with gas prices at their current level, the average consumer is paying roughly 10 percent of their income every month just to get back and forth to work and run the family errands.
With gas prices expected to hit $5 or even $6 a gallon and a mostly stagnant job market t’would seem there are more important issues for the president to be concerning himself with than the cost of birth control pills.

Well, I have a better idea for Sandra to save money to go to Georgetown, and I don’t think it’s too flukey. She needs to buy one of those ten dollar heavy duty latex French Ticklers for her stable of stud muffins. I understand the toys are washable, take a licking and keep on tickling and should last her all year.
Here is perspective:
Get your ovaries out of my wallet.
You know, it really REALLY pisses me off when MEN insist that a woman is having sex just because she is using birth control pills. I was using birth control pills to deal with an extra heavy menstrual cycle for years, until a cyst was found on one ovary. I bled into my abdominal cavity EACH month, and the old blood just collected there, and it HURT. and it slouched off too… but had no where to go. enditromosis in the worse possible case. I lost the left ovary, and 1/3 of the right ovary. And they had to clean out the old blood. YEARS of old blood. Don’t assume a woman is a slut just because she is using birth control. I am certainly not. I was a virgin on my wedding day 20 years ago, and that was AFTER I was taking these pills for 7 years.
Dana I’m very sorry to hear about your problem, but I’m sure that you are well aware that even the Catholic would have an issue for woman such as you needing to take “the pill” for health reasons. In fact many of the Catholic universities that were cited as paying for birth control in their health plans, it was for exactly like situation such as yours. And I’m sure that there is no one who is against the HHS Mandate would be against the use of the pill for medical reasons, such as yours. If Ms. Fluke had the same health issues as you, I’m sure she would not being using the generic term “contraceptives” and would have also mentioned in her testimony. Her testimony was about birth-control and wanting it free. And rather than calling her a slut and prostitute, it would have been better to call her what she really is; a liar.
*sigh* You know, I really really wasn’t going to mention this, but I’m ALSO Roman Catholic. And my priest didn’t give me a lecture about being a slut or having sex out of marriage when I told him I was taking birth control pills. He was sympathetic, and asked if I was having sex. I told him no, I was saving myself for my husband. Which I was. He then asked me to find some other way to handle my medical problem when I was married, which by that time, was basically surgery… *sigh* And no, I don’t have kids. (Not that we haven’t tried). God decided being in a wheelchair was probably enough of a challenge, I guess.
DanaWheels, bless you I can only wish you better.
Dealing with this must be a bit of a nightmare.
No, guys would’ve never thought of that.
Thanks much for adding more of a perspective on “A Little Perspective”!
I have yet to hear the point that a person who engages is so much recreational sex may have some other issues, including low self-esteem and/or depression. I regret that Mr. Limbaugh’s monologue that day failed to note the mental health issues Ms. Fluke virtually confessed to. Similarly, the use Jared Lee Loughner’s mental illness to score partisan political points after he murdered Judge John Roll and wounded 14 others. Also, the use of the homeless in the Occupy movement. And don’t forget the manipulation and use of emotion during the Paul Wellstone funeral. In short, Democrats use the mentally ill for political gain, and drop the issue (and them) when it is no longer politically advantageous.
My take is that Obama won’t violate the covenants of his “religion” (environmentalism or the Church of Re-elect Barack – take your pick) to help us out but he sure as hell expects many of us to dishonor ours so he can buy votes.
Just to put a little more perspective on all this. This is from the Daily Caller dated 3/10. I think he may be able to buy his own condoms.
O’Reilly found on Friday that Fluke is also dating the son of “Democratic stalwart” William Mutterperl, who has made numerous donations to the Democratic Party and liberal candidates in recent years.
“For six days, we have been telling you that the 30-year-old Georgetown law student has become a major player in the presidential election,” O’Reilly said during his “Talking Points Memo” segment. “Last night, we reported that she is now being handled pro bono, for free, by the PR firm SKDKnickerbocker, which is good, because Sandra doesn’t have enough money to buy birth control pills, as we know. But there is more to Sandra’s story than just contraception. Right now, she’s on spring break in California with her boyfriend, who is the son of Democratic stalwart William Mutterperl. He has made at least 56 donations to Democratic candidates or organizations. Nothing wrong with that — I’m just pointing it out.”
