It's Right to Bear Arms Week in Montana

Lock and load, because it’s Second Amendment week in Montana.

The week beginning today is designated by state law as an observance of the right to bear arms. “During this week, all Montanans are urged to reflect on their right to keep and bear arms and to celebrate this right in lawful ways,” the law states.

“As your representative in Washington, and as a gun owner myself, it’s my duty and honor to protect our right to bear arms from all threats – legislative or judicial,” Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.) said in an announcement of the occasion today.

He credited lobbying groups such as the NRA and Gun Owners of America for keeping legislative efforts against gun rights at bay.

“Anti-gun advocates haven’t abandoned their assault on our freedom,” Rehberg said. “They’ve merely changed their tactics. The fight has moved from the legislature to the courtroom. That’s bad because Judges get lifetime appointments so once seated, they don’t answer to voters.”

President Obama “got to work” by seating Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan on the high court, Montana’s sole congressman said.

“Surprisingly, both Justices were confirmed by Senators who claim to support the Second Amendment,” Rehberg continued. “With lifetime appointments, Justices Sotomayor and Kagan will, in all likelihood, be threatening our gun rights long after those hypocritical Senators are gone.”
