Agence France Press reported yesterday that Oliver Stone’s son Sean converted to Islam in Iran. AFP made an error in its report, however, by asserting that the famed director is Jewish. Judaism is matrilineal and only Stone’s father is Jewish. His mother – ironically, given the nationality of the press agency – is French and Catholic.
But never mind. The question remains why would Stone’s son convert to Islam? A conventional answer might be the oft-cited links now between Islamism and leftism. But there may be another reason: Islam’s attitude towards women. Stone pere has been married three times, but his reputation as womanizer (and, to some, misogynist) extends far beyond that paltry number. Perhaps his son, in the tradition of the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, was seeking opportunities via Islam his father never had: simultaneous marriages, “temporary” marriages, divorce laws tilted notoriously in favor of men, etc.
It’s not just that he converted. He converted in Iran, which is actively hostile to America. Oliver is chummy with Hugo Chavez, who is hostile to America, son is doing the same thing while trying to be his own man in going islamist rather than secularist.
But in both cases The State & Faith are merged. At least during medieval Europe there were tensions between kings and popes, implying that the state and faith were separate (usually the state enforced the faith, but they were separate).
It’s the Islam two-step.
First they say, “Oh, if you only accept Mohammed as the Prophet, then you can come and see the beauty of our celebration and really get to know us. No, it’s not really conversion.”
Then they say, “Oh, now that you have accepted Mohammed, anything else is idolatry and we will have to keel you. No, that wasn’t conversion before, not full conversion, but you now have ten seconds to recite the other four pillars.” Including in his case a seven figure zakat if he wants to go home in one piece I don’t doubt.

You always hear about “Cafeteria Catholics”; those who adhere to the church’s teachings only when they aren’t an inconvenience to their personal lifestyles. but it’s going to be interesting to see if the younger Stone is actually serious with his conversion, or if he plans to be a “Cafeteria Muslim” — i.e. adhering only to the parts of Islam that fit with his dad’s leftism and misogyny (hatred of Israel, treatment of women), while ignoring other less Hollywood-friend aspects of the religion, such as its opposition to second- and third-trimester abortions.
A Sean Stone who actually follows Islam’s teachings is going to be a real drag at the left coast parties, while one who openly flaunts his new faith’s teachings could find himself in a Salomon Rushdie situation, if he manages to offend a few of the less tolerant clerics out there.
