In an interview today, the former Godfathers CEO told CNN reporter Jim Acosta that he will make a final decision about his campaign “in the next several days.”
After new claims of a 13-year affair surfaced this week, GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain is reported to be “reassessing” his candidacy. The big question: will the Georgia businessman withdraw from the race in light of these new allegations?
His campaign manager, Mark Block, told ABC News last night that there was “no way” Cain would be dropping out and an email to supporters sent yesterday afternoon, Cain reaffirms his commitment to the 2012 election by stating, “Let me assure you, I am not deterred. America’s future is too important. We will continue on this journey to make America great once again.”
Mark Blockhead is a professional political operative. Of course he says that. Doesn’t mean it is at all true. His reassurances mean nothing. What he says means nothing. Only what the candidate says matters. If Cain says he is re-assessing, then that is what he is doing. He is considering if he might have to drop out, and he should be considering it. I would worry if he didn’t consider it.
These operatives are clever guys, but not wise at all. The proper thing to say:
“These allegations have hurt our campaign. Clearly, the support we had is dropping. The responsible thing to do is consider whether we can recover, or if we have to throw our support to another candidate, because the important thing is getting Obama out and America functioning again. We will probably continue on, but we are not so arrogant that we will hurt the country, by refusing to admit we are defeated, if we are. One has to be realistic, and keep the ultimate objective in sight. Cain’s candidacy is not the goal. Making America right again is the goal. We are committed to that goal.”
Such a thing would play very well, and would be true, or accepted as truth. Blocks statement of commitment is received as false, the usual propaganda for the troops to soldier on, while the mucky-mucks prepare their exits.
Political operatives play the game, work the numbers, and have no sense of humanity. Soulless creatures are they.
