Bill Bennett – a man with his own problems, but nonetheless concerned with ethics – has called on Herman Cain to speak up completely and forthrightly on the allegations against him:
Four women are not an insignificant number. One or two anonymous charges, perhaps. Three anonymous charges (where, as I understand the story, Cain knows of at least two of the women) plus one woman who went very public and opened herself up to all manner of investigation are a lot. It is no longer insignificant. Neither is it insignificant that the Cain campaign discounted the charges in the initial stories, saying they were based on anonymous sources, only to make a mockery by blaming other campaigns with less substantiation than the original stories.
If Herman Cain wants to be taken seriously as a public advocate for anything, never mind running for the chief executive and commander in chief of the most powerful and important and blessed country in the world, he needs to give a full press conference dedicated exclusively to this issue and these allegations.
I have watched long enough and held my tongue long enough to give him the benefit of the doubt, but can no longer say this is a witch hunt, “a lynching” to use his word, or any other euphemism. There are allegations out there that matter and they have stacked up. For we who led the charge against Bill Clinton on a number of related issues to continue to blame the media or other campaigns or say it simply doesn’t matter makes us the hypocrites as well.

Bill Bennett is unendurable on radio for pomposity. He could read a grocery list and make it sound snobbish. I listen to Imus instead, or ESPN. How bad is that?

No, I do NOT think Cain made a pass at this (ahem) “lady”. My spidey sense tells me it was the other way around. She offered sex in return for getting her job back, or perhaps in return for cash on the barrelhead, Cain refused, and she decided to get back at him. If her ego can’t take a little rejection, then no wonder she is incapable of making an honest living in a sales/PR job.

When I think about the brothers Bennett, I often think about the marriage of Mary Maitlin and James Carville, which is the same story different parties and different ideologies who are soul mates that share the same inside the beltway elitism.

I find Bennett to be annoying as hell. He’s as “inside the Beltway” as they come. He’s thoroughly partisan, and appears to believe that everything will be fine as long as we elect enough Republicans. He seems oblivious to the statist rot that infests the Republican Party from top to bottom.
But what really sent me over the edge was just after Obama was elected, when Bennett seemed to think that he might govern from the center, and we should give him a chance. I knew the man was a stone-cold Communist, and yet this highly educated and oh-so-erudite Dr. Bennett was unable to see what was plain as day to me.
In a normal situation, four women would be a lot. In this situation, it’s not. Only the most recent has spoken out, there is no corraboration, her lawyer is a bottom-feeder, and key elements of her claims are questionable. The two settlements are significant but are diminished because the women won’t speak, because the settlement amounts were small, and because so few details are known.
Four lies don’t equal a truth.
But the most telling point is the bias of the media.
Cain might not be the man that his fans insist he is, but it certainly isn’t proven by these allegations.
On the other hand, blind faith in what he says won’t make him a saint either.
The story hasn’t ended yet.
Ace has just said that Cain’s latest statement is not good. Instead of denying the allegations of the latest woman, the statement attacks the press. Ace says that is not the action of an innocent man.

Bill Bennett seems to think if enough people accuse you, you must be guilty. What do we call that? Guilt by sheer volume? Fortunately due process allows for the possibility that all the accusers are dishonest and we should allow Herman Cain the same possibility until we have more than hearsay.
