A while back, Hans von Spakovsky reported that the DOJ had a job announcement for lawyers and specifically encouraged attorneys with mental retardation and mental illness to apply for Civil Rights Division jobs. We saw no evidence in our Every Single One series that any such lawyers were hired by the Holder Justice Department. Now comes this from Hans Bader: Obama’s Equal Opportunity Employment Commission is encouraging alcoholics to apply for jobs driving eighteen wheelers.
The EEOC is now demanding that trucking companies like Old Dominion Freight Line not only hire and employ “recovering” alcoholics, but also to allow them to continue working as interstate truckers rather than being assigned “to a less safety-sensitive position.” The EEOC notes that recovering alcoholics are covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
And as anyone will tell you, there is no such thing as a former alcoholic. This sort of madness from the federal government is enough to drive you to drink.
EEOC must have hired some “pre-recovery” alcoholics of their own to issue these regulations.

I can only assume this is intended to build public support for high-speed rail, since people will want to keep off the roads once this becomes known.

With bananna republic dictator types, there is a strong tendency to be bat$h!! crazy, or to spout lunacy even if they are not. I suspect it is a tactic for sane dictators to be unpredictable to their enemies, or, maybe they are all crazy. This is what happens when moral and character flaws become diseases. Since the people that are behind this kind of thinking don’t recognize or can’t tolerate the concept of morality, they use the language of disease, disability and victimhood to categorize what’s wrong and define treatment. Once it is merely a disability, it’s treated like all disabilities.
I might also add that mental illness is the cause behind the explosion in Social Security Disability claims & subsequent impending bankruptcy (the recession is only a small part of that, don’t let the media tell you otherwise). So not only will pedophiles be invited to work at daycares, if they can’t they’ll collect disability benefits on our dime. It’s only the next logical step.

I think this is the epitome of “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds”. The “reasoning” apparently goes like this: “we cannot allow anyone to discriminate against those with diseases for any reason, alcoholism is a ‘disease’, therefore we cannot allow discrimination against alcoholics for any reason!”
Next thing, they’ll be demanding that narcoleptics be hired as airline pilots…
This is just weird, and bad science to boot. If you have diabetes or a seizure disorder, you can’t be a long-haul trucker. Why the exemption for alcoholics? I’d say that bare minimum they have to be dry for ten years before they can drive- just like people with a history of seizure disorders have to seizure-free off meds for 10 years.

Alcholism is NOT a disability under which the ADA is applicable. The ADA covers physical and mental disabilities and alcoholism isn’t considered any of those. It is a TREATABLE affliction that is not a long term disability. The ADA was meant to cover those that were made disabled NOT BY THEIR OWN FAULT. People that are afflicted by alcoholism starts when someone drinks too much. Sorry, it doesn’t impair a major life function like walking, standing, or anything like that. Even if it impairs you mentally, it is a disease by choice, and not something that just happens. So, the ADA would not apply. Other laws may apply, but not the ADA. And who would want alcoholics driving trucks anyway.
We already have a moron running the US government so having a few drunks driving trucks can’t make things that much worse…..
The campaign ads write themselves… oh and you’d be surprised how many train accidents involve trucks.
i drive for old dominion and, trust me, i don’t want to be on the road with any recovering super truckers. this administratration continues to amaze.

…that’s been the situation for a long time; I suppose they’ve decided to make it official…
I remember a while back a guy applied for a deputy sheriff job; he had been a reserve deputy, liked the work and wanted to make a job of it. His background check revealed that he used to smoke a lot of dope and he wasn’t hired. He sued under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The judge threw the case out, saying that had he actually been an addict, the ADA would have covered him and he could have sued. Since he had smoked for fun, he had no standing under ADA.

I AM a recovering alcoholic and this is about the stupidest thing — well, tied anyway — that I’ve seen from this administration. I guess they want drunk drivers to “come out of the shadows”?
How about if trucking companies hire the people they trust with their trucks and the cargo? If they trust a recovering alcoholic, what’s it to you? If the recovering alcoholic causes an accident, the driver might be responsible but the guy whose cargo is now spread all over the interstate is going to hold the trucking company responsible. That knowledge keeps the trucking company focused on hiring good drivers.
