Texas Gov. Rick Perry has zoomed to the top of the GOP pack, according to Gallup.
Shortly after announcing his official candidacy, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has emerged as rank-and-file Republicans’ current favorite for their party’s 2012 presidential nomination. Twenty-nine percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents nationwide say they are most likely to support Perry, with Mitt Romney next, at 17%.
In one week, Rick Perry and his team have captured the heart of the GOP primary. They did it through strategic smarts, as in the timing and place of his initial announcement, and through fearlessness in taking the fight to Obama. Perry’s broadsides startled the media and provoked responses from thin-skinned Obama, which lent him enough attention to make last week appear to be a tw0-man race.
A Perry/Rubio ticket..I can’t even form the sentence, honestly.
Update: And here’s the promised PPP poll. It puts Perry up over Romney 33-20 nationally. He also beats Romney and Bachmann in head-to-heads. PPP also looks at past GOP “flavor of the month” candidates and concludes that Perry’s strength exceeds all the previous ones, from Herman Cain to Mike Huckabee, so he is more likely to have real staying power.
