You really got to love Chris Muir over at Day by Day. He gets it and has zero respect for the pols on either side.

“Politicians are like the instruments on the dashboard of my car. They tell me what is going on in the engine of State, but they don’t control it.”
Sir Fred Hoyle had his protagonist Chris Kingsley say that in his novel The Black Cloud. It can be augmented slightly by noting that politicians are most ardent to convince us that they control the course of events, whatever the true extent of their powers may be.
Historically, those pols who’ve exerted a substantial measure of control over events in their nations have been persons such as Stalin, Mao, Hitler, Tojo, and Pol Pot: the great mass murderers of our species. There’s a moral in there, somewhere.
There most definitely is. “Power corrupts, abolute power corrupts absolutely.” – Lord Acton.
“It is said that power corrupts, but actually it’s more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power.” – David Brin.
