Someone in Congress knew about Gunrunner, and Obama signed funding for it into law

Over at the Free Republic, a poster found this:

I posted in the thread: “Only time “gun” or “firearm” appears is in the part that give $10,000,000 to the ATF for Project Gunrunner. That was H.R. 495, asking for 15,000,000 for Gunrunner”.
H.R. 495 that I mentioned never made it out of committee, but it looks as it was to specifically fund Gunrunner.
Instead portions of it were rolled into the stimulus package a month later. That text found in H.R.1 is:
For an additional amount for ‘State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance’, $40,000,000, for competitive grants to provide assistance and equipment to local law enforcement along the Southern border and in High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas to combat criminal narcotics activity stemming from the Southern border, of which $10,000,000 shall be transferred to ‘Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Salaries and Expenses’ for the ATF Project Gunrunner.
Notice that’s $40,000,000 for Southern border enforcement, $10,000,000 of which specifically for Project Gunrunner. What does $10 million pay for here? It didn’t hire any new agents that I am aware of.

So Obama didn’t know anything about this, but he signed $10,000,000 in funding for the program. This thing would stink on a dung pile. It’s time for indictments.

    Holder was talking about Gunrunner a few months later;

    http://www.justice.gov/ag/speeches/2009/ag-speech-090402.html

    • The remarks make it very clear, contrary to recent protests from Mexican authorities, that Mexico was and is fully aware of and cooperative with Project Gunrunner.

      • lolly

What better way to invade and take over a country (via population bombs) than in assisting in disarming that country’s population?

    • Sharpshooter

      OH!! MY!! GAWD!!

Too bad nothing will ever come of it. Laws, you see, are for rubes and chumps, not for the elite like them.

  2. 2. Walt C

Which Congressman was responsible for adding this to the budget requests?

Why is this not being talked about on every news outlet? This is bigger than watergate, iran/contra, abu graheb, waterboarding all rolled into one.

And yet we spend all of our time second guessing a jury in Florida.

Talk about a “W”in “T”he “F”uture moment in our nations history.

People should be getting lead out in handcuffs.

” Another day wondering why we are doing nothing about everything.”

  3. 3. Rob Crawford

So, basically, we have Congressional and Senate Democrats passing, and Obama signing, the funding for a program to supply guns to Mexican cartels.

    • Trialdog

…and hoping the guns would be used.

      • NoTingles

And taken to the next logical deduction, it gives the Second Amendment a “black eye”, this false flag tactic does, which leads to: All the justification the NWO minions need to remove more of our rights (Right to keep and bear arms), and to convince everyone this is for our own good and safety. Pretty slick, if it wasn’t so evil.

    • Exactly right. Slightly OT, but every gun law since 1934 has been UN-Constitutional. Back on topic, of course the elite want to use any method they can to disarm us. So they use our money to buy guns to sell to the cartels to cause panic to gain public support for more gun laws. Just like Hitler, and Mao, and Turkey, and every place else that has ever disarmed their public before establishing a dictatorship.

  4. 4. Bohemond

Remember when not all that long ago, despite the Heller and McDonald decisions, Obama assured the Brady Bunch gungrabbers that he was “working behind the scenes” to advance gun control?

How Much Money Did Operation Gunrunner get:

A November 2010 report says it got $10 Million in February 2009 Recovery Act
Supplemental Appropriations Act, June 2009 another Six Million Dollars.
Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriations Bill of 2010 allocated $37.5 million to ATF for Project Gunrunner, In August 2010.

As Reported in this DOJ Document: http://www.justice.gov/oig/reports/ATF/e1101.pdf Scroll down to page 110 of the report at the link above to read for yourself

Another 20 Million Dollars in the Stimulus package, plus an additional 10 Million Dollars that was due for this operation in the fiscal 2011 Budget thats never been voted on

      Way to go, James!

You just single-handedly did more quality research than the combined staff of the Washington Post and the New York Times. Your brief entry should be posted at all U.S. newspapers and journalism schools, and at ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN, to show them what actual journalism really looks like.

    • Anonymous

Uh…oh….Dept. of Justice has already scrubbed the report….

    • Try this link:

      http://www.justice.gov/oig/reports/ATF/e1101.pdf

If it doesn’t work, copy and paste. I tried this and it worked. I found it by using the DOJ search function, and saved a copy. Page 110 of the PDF.

    • arhooley

Bad enough that tax dollars bought those guns. Now we find out it was TARP money, which was supposed to be used to stimulate the private economy not fund government schemes. Vomit.

      • Aside from all the other hair-raising aspects of this scandal, can someone explain to me how Toxic Assets Relief Program money could be shunted to ATF for any purpose? Is there no one in Congress who would see this as as a misuse of funds? Were there no red flags raised? Is there no common sense left in the halls of Congress? Boggles the mind…

Go to that link, wait for it to load (it’s long). Then CTRL-F (find) “gunrunner”. Should bring you right to it, highlighted.

  7. 7. Suthenboy

I’m slow….I cant believe I didnt see this from the start of this debacle.
Earlier a PJM commenter on another story about gunrunner suggested that not only did the ATF allow the guns to be bought by straw buyers, but the ATF must have had a deal with the cartels and were using taxpayer money to purchase the guns. It makes sense, because cartel buyers coming to the USA to buy guns doesnt.
They have to sneak across the border, make an illegal or suspicious purchase at 100x the price they can get the guns elsewhere, then smuggle them back across the border. Hmmmm. Why not sail down to Guatamala, El Salvador, Honduras or any number of other places and buy a shipload of arms for a small fraction of the price and not have to worry about cops?
Hmmm. $10,000,000 huh? What do you want to bet a very large portion of that went to ‘informants’, i.e. straw buyers?
I would like to see a full accounting of every penny of that 10M.

By the way, Mexican citizens are beginning to call for a liberalization of gun laws in Mexico so that they can defend themselves.

    • Vettelover

Nothing will ever come of any of this. Nothing! Melson will be the sacrificial lamb thrown under the bus and that will be the end of it.

The self proclaimed banker elites and their CFR Democrats and Republicans will stop at nothing to remove the constitution and the freedoms that go with it! If you read the 2nd Amendment, it is pretty damn clear that they are not even allowed to tweak out

  8. 8. daddy

And from this CNS story we have Jay Carney refusing to reply to reporters requests about when Obama knew about the program, after initially telling reporters he would find that information out and get back to them about it.

@#6: James, the DOJ document is not found. Did you happen to secure a copy while you were visiting? If not, we may never get to read it. Thanks.

  10. 10. 4Gs

James (Comment #6 above) — I hope you saved a copy of the DOJ document, because when I followed the link it said 404 not found. If you did, is there any way the rest of us could see it please? Thanks.

  11. 11. Abe

Some great research in connecting the dots! Boy oh boy the dots are pointing to the top aren’t they?
This isn’t just a handful of mental midgets, it’s a coordinated effort by the Obama administration to attack the 2nd Amendment with our own money.

  14. 14. Rigidflexibility

At least one dead American Border Agent and an unknown number of Mexican citizens and law enforcement agents killed with these weapons.

Even a moron can figure out this isn’t right. There needs to be criminal investigations and if warrented criminal charges.

Attorney General Holder needs to resign if he knew of, let alone approved, this criminal enterprise.

    • NoTingles

No resignations for Holder. It’s too late for that. If he saw the handwriting on the wall, he should have run for the exits long ago. But he didn’t. He is at the very least complicit. But even that belies the fact the buck stops with him; i.e. he is ultimately responsible. He should now be indicted, and tried for treason, malfeasance, murder among other things. I say treason because it looks more and more like this whole thing goes well beyond an error of judgment or a mistake. This stinks of deliberate conspiracy to commit an act of terror against the American people.

  15. 15. pagar

Did your Congressperson/Senator vote for the Stimulus?

If so have you asked your Congressperson/Senator why they voted to send guns to Mexico to kill Mexicans and Americans?
I’m pretty sure that providing murder weapons or money to buy murder weapons is a crime.

    Pg 87
PART V: MEXICAN CRIME GUN TRACING
ATF’s attempts to expand gun tracing in Mexico have been unsuccessful. Although the number of trace requests from Mexico has increased since FY 2006, most seized guns in Mexico are not traced. Moreover, most trace requests from Mexico do not succeed in identifying the gun dealer who originally sold the gun, and the rate of successful traces has declined since the start of Project Gunrunner. Most Mexican crime gun trace requests that were successful were untimely and of limited use for generating investigative leads. Senior Mexican law enforcement authorities we interviewed do not view gun tracing as an important investigative tool because of limitations in the information tracing typically provides and because ATF has not adequately communicated the value of gun tracing to Mexican officials.
Despite ATF’s efforts to increase the tracing of guns seized in Mexico, traces are not producing usable investigative leads.
Gun tracing can help ATF identify firearm traffickers operating in the United States and in Mexico. Gun tracing can also provide intelligence regarding patterns and trends in gun trafficking.
In its June 2007 Project Gunrunner strategy, ATF established the implementation of eTrace in Mexico and improvements in its intelligence capabilities as two of the four key operational elements of Project Gunrunner. Further, the Project Gunrunner strategy states, “In order for intelligence relating to [Project Gunrunner] to be of value, it must be ‘real time’ in nature.”
Yet, we found that most crime guns seized in Mexico are not traced and trace requests often cannot be completed because of missing or improperly entered gun data. Further, Mexican trace requests often are not submitted on a timely basis. As a result, most Mexican crime guns that can be traced were initially sold too long ago to yield useful investigative leads.91

i saw el presidente make that statement about having a plan to get our guns when he said it. he had just taken a beating on the 2nd Amendment by the s.c., and the hitlery deal with the u.n. small arms treaty wasn’t going anywhere, so what did he mean?

    now i know.

    we have a problem houston.

I heard Darrell Issa on Laura Ingraham’s show this morning and Mark Levin linked to here. I open to five sites, including this one, when I open internet explorer. I am trying to save a copy of it, but I forgot my Adobe password. I would not save as a PDF file from one of the links above.
Issa has talked about this a lot. It’s been written about in the DC Examiner too. Indictments should follow soon, I hope I am not placing too much faith in Darrell Issa. I think he is a good man.

I remember Mexican Pres. Calderon also criticizing us, the US (during his May 2010 address to Congress) for allowing gunrunning over the boarder. Here is a quote from a Fox News report:

“Calderon also told Congress Thursday that the fight against narcotics traffickers along the border can only succeed if the United States reduces its demand for illegal drugs. Calderon called on Congress to reinstate the assault weapons ban. “The Second Amendment is not a subject open for diplomatic negotiation, with Mexico or any other nation,” Cornyn said.

He said the United States must stop the flow of assault weapons and other arms across the border.

Page 13 ” ATF received $4.5 million in asset forfeiture funds to initiate a Spanish version of ATF’s e-trace to Mexico from Treasury’s Asset Forfeiture fund, as a complement to the Merida Initiative efforts.

    • Ruth

In 2009 Ciro D. Rodriguez D-TX Introduced H.R 495 “Southwest Border Violence Reduction Act of 2009″. What this tells me is that several congressmen also had knowledge of what Gunrunner was going to entail. This isn’t just the ATF and DOJ. This is all levels and areas of government. Even members of the House and Senate knew what Project Gunrunner was.Obama always said the stimulus would create jobs but I don’t think Americans knew he was talking about Mexican Gunrunners…

‘Gun Runner’ – ‘Gun Walker’ – ‘Fast and Furious’ – call it what you will – but know this – ‘Laws have been broken’ – ‘many people are dead’ – and ‘Obama and his dwarfs will have even more indiscretions to pay for’!
You can blog – you can blab – you can blaze – you can try to influence voters – but you will end up blathering and losing out to more ‘public important’ Anthony type coverage by the liberal net works and their print out lets!
Oh and the time will come when possessing a firearm will be illegal – so get yours while you can and stash them along with plenty of ammunition.
Also get a guide book (a copy of the constitution ) and brush up on the part that refers to the elimination of the bad seeds of a corrupt Government.
    Just do it!

  25. 25. ronnor

Our own government used tax money that has bought the guns for the drug cartels who murdered over 150 Police Officers in Mexico and in the United States in order to get rid of the 2nd Amendment and to be able to confiscate the “Peoples”guns. This is what the Democrat Party has become, they are gangsters and if GunWalker is tied to them we should facilitate the extradition to Mexico for the crime of murder as they are complicit in the deaths of over 150 Law Officers being shot with those guns. All of this by members of the Democrat Party to win elections or something else very sinister; I’m voting for something else very sinister.

  26. 26. Sean Slattery

In all the talk about this fiasco, I haven’t heard the words “entrapment.” Isn’t conspiracy to commit entrapment a felony? Does RICO apply here? I would like to some indictments handed down.

Similarly, somewhere we’re forgetting to explicitly state that one cannot break the law to enforce it. It seems like doing so would be redundant, but really, it’s not.

  27. 27. mydailysoapbox

http://youtu.be/-PNhYk9NuNc UH-OH…BUSTED! “Project Gun Runner (Fast and Furious) was launched under the orders of President Barack Obama with the knowledge of Attorney General Eric Holder. Deputy Attorney General David Ogden announced the Obama Administration’s new and aggressive ‘comprehensive plan’ on March, 24, 2009. The plan was aimed at disrupting gun trafficking between the United States and Mexico.”

  28. 28. Jason

Why was it ever in doubt that not only Obama knew all about it, but probably signed it with a kiss? Hey America This is your president! This is the animal many of your that probably can’t even spell the word ‘vote’ registered to vote for, a lot of you probably registered in crayon to vote for, registering for the first time in your un-American lives! So in the words of John Mccain ‘This is your President, This is your president, SUUPORT HIM! or in my words Choke on him! You wanted him and called me a racist when I didn’t who’s the racist now America!!!!

  29. 29. Jim

Its doubtful that we will see coverage of this from the old outdated lib media, unless it becomes impossible to continue suppressing it from the public. Imagine the non-stop coverage if someone other than one of their favored big leftist ideologues was our President. This may turn into Nobama’s Watergate, as it should if he’s involved.

  30. 30. NoTingles

I want to say this to each of you who have posted your comments here: WELL DONE, in Bold 26point Times Roman.

You all are really on the ball, and I hope you keep it up always. Believe it or not, right now America is depending on people like you.

  31. 31. Jake

Be careful not to conflate ‘Project Gunrunner’ with ‘Operation Fast and Furious’ (a.k.a., ‘Project Gunwalker‘). They are not the same. A good overview is here.

Basically, Gunrunner is the overall long-term cartel weapons interdiction program, while Fast and Furious is a single operation within that program. At this point, there has been no indication that Gunrunner as a whole, outside of the single operation known as Fast and Furious, is anything but legitimate.

Most importantly, knowledge of Gunrunner does not imply a necessary knowledge of Fast and Furious.

Confusing the two like this only serves to weaken the position of those investigating by allowing the ATF, DoJ, and others involved to point to “wild” and “baseless” allegations and paint accusers as “deranged” or “unreliable”.

  32. 32. Michael

I find it hard to believe that Project Gun Runner had no author, than one day it was just thrown in at the last minute into the Obama’s Stimulas Package. This is nothing but insanity. For someone in our government to do something as unthoughtful as this just show’s the world how stupid our President’s Regime can possibly be, and to think that our closes neighbor, along with their Cartels would do all they can to hide the fact that they bought Guns with the permission from our government. This was a disastor waiting to happen. My question is, who were the Rep’s involved with sneaking this highly thought of anti terrorist policy into this disastorist Stimulas Bill anyway? Find them and you will find that, Holder and the President know’s more about Project Gun Runner than America thinks.

  33. 33. Oldguy

This is another reason for the line item veto. The president has two choices, sign the whole thing or veto the whole thing. Congress failed again to give the man with the responsibility the tools to do the job.

  34. 34. 264Win

Well it all makes sense to the corrupt of D.C. make the every day citizen a sucker for all their propaganda. It was always smoke and mirrors and anti gun propaganda. Funded by us taxpayers. They have a agenda to do away with the Second ammendment.

  35. 35. Ed_in_Sac

*Who was the victim, Mexico or AZ?*

It sounds unconscionable, but promoting increased gun violence on the AZ border not only justifies implementing new gun controls upon US citizens but tends to diminish the public’s view about the competency of their elected State Representatives and Law enforcement officials. Since both in AZ have actively opposed the current administrations lack of enforcement of illegal immigration, promoting an image of incompetence can help garner votes against the incumbents in future elections.

    *Who profited by this program?*

Not the ATF/DOJ/law abiding US Citizens. Do people really think that the gangs operating in the US are small time operations with no political prowess or influence? Are people THAT naive?

*Thanks to the brave Patriots who took personal risks to expose this horrible GunRunner operation.*
