Geithner on his way out? (Updated)

But…they sold him as the only man in America who could do the job.

Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner has signaled to White House officials that he’s considering leaving the administration after President Barack Obama reaches an agreement with Congress to raise the national debt limit, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Geithner hasn’t made a final decision and won’t do so until the debt ceiling issue has been resolved, according to one of the people. All spoke on condition of anonymity to talk about private discussions.

Geithner would be the last of the original economic team to leave Obama’s sinking economic ship. The SS Obama has pushed American into titanic debt, while its captain blames others for failures that he at least shares, both as president and as a Senator. Geithner may be taking the last lifeboat out of this tired metaphor.

Update: The Hill asks around and finds out that maybe Geithner is leaving, or maybe he isn’t.
