The combustible combination of the relatively low-paying and not-particularly-time-consuming occupation of university professor, the ever-present stimulus in professors’ lives of sexually-alluring students, academics’ notorious naïveté in business affairs and, perhaps most telling of all in this case, the arrogant and ill-founded belief that they were so brilliant that nothing either of these senior scholars could do could possibly be stupid has resulted in the arrests on promotion of prostitution charges through their password-protected online bordello of two heretofore respected professors.
Professors are typically known for augmenting their meager academic salaries with the writing of books and the giving of lectures when they’re not actually teaching. This is the story of what happened when two academics meandered a bit too far afield from the ivory tower and found themselves in a netherworld best left to the lords of Las Vegas.
Professor F. Chris Garcia, the 71-year-old former president of the University of New Mexico, now a professor emeritus of political science there, and a physics professor at New Jersey’s Fairleigh Dickinson University, 68-year-old David C. Flory, who lives on the Upper West Side in New York City and in an exclusive, gated community in Santa Fe, are both out on bail awaiting trials, according to The New York Post, whose peerless copy editors have already dubbed Professor Flory the “Pimp Professor.” Actually, it was Professor Garcia, whose work has won him the support of both the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, who was in charge of finding new “talent” for the professorial partnership.
It is interesting to note that among the items seized in a police search of Professor Garcia’s University of New Mexico office was a list of prostitutes who worked for the cyber-ring that included—are you ready for this?—his grades of each of them. Yes, he graded them with As, A-minuses, B-plusses… Once a grader, always a grader.

Correction. Once a degrader, always a degrader.
You scared me for a minute. I’ve always understood that he second oldest profession is bee-keeping. I would rank both prostitution and pimping in the same older profession.
Bee-keeping! I agree that prostitution and pimping should be deemed a single enterprise, although it could be argued that a pimp is an agent and thus would be in a different category entirely, but I won’t argue that because there’s an implicit chicken-egg problem with who is the principal and who is the agent. I was referring to the profession of teaching as the second-oldest profession, as I hope I made clear. Ronald Reagan had a different view: “It has been said that politics is the second oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first.”
belladonna, were you not my junior-year philosophy professor (argumentation theory 360)? if not, you should have been.
I always thought that the world’s oldest profession was actually apple-picking. Guess it all depends on your definitions.
Nah, professors are not among the three oldest professions. Those are, without a doubt, priests, politicians, and prostitutes. Its all about power, money, and sex, in any order you like.
Who said professors had “meager” salaries? Maybe that is true of instructors and non-tenured profs, but the big boys make substantial wages. Go here for further proof. At Virginia Tech, for example, most full professors make over $200,000 per annum! http://www.collegiatetimes.com/databases/salaries/
