Out: Muslim Brotherhood. Too sectarian, too male, or something. In: Freedom and Justice Party. Maybe the world will think we’re now the exact opposite of what we’ve been for decades.
Egypt’s official news agency says the long banned Muslim Brotherhood has been recognized as the Freedom and Justice Party.
The announcement Tuesday would allow the group to run in parliamentary elections set for September.
The Brotherhood is considered one of Egypt’s best organized blocs following the fall of longtime President Hosni Mubarak in February. It was founded in 1928 but outlawed since 1954.

This reminds me of the bad old Cold War days when the certain indicator of a communist country was if it had the words “people” or “democratic” in its name, e.g. Deuchland Democratic Republic (East Germany): Communist and People’s Republic of China: Communist
By proclaiming themselves the “Freedom and Justice Party”, they’re showing they’re for neither.
You’re talking about upside/down land: it’s really the “No Freedom and Justice Party” and that’s exactly what they mean.
Egyptians are also fond of naming many things “Oct 6″ after their “victory” in 1973.
Being “conservative” muslims means most of the men in Cairo smoke hash.
Sometimes its just sideways land: “right of return” means: “My grandfather rented an apartment in Haifa”.
Once you understand that muslims are right when they’re wrong and pretty much do the opposite of what they say or mean, everything in the middle east becomes clear.
I guess they were being straight when they said they weren’t running any brotherhood candidates. See, they can be trusted. /sarc
Get ready Israel, as soon as these guys get total control of Egypt, they will attack.
They’re the Freedom and Justice Party? Well, that’ll be good enough for a highly intelligent liberal friends.
You know, this name is surprisingly close to the name of the democratically elected, governing Islamist party, the “AKP” or “Justice & Development Party,” that is rapidly transforming Turkey into a police state.
In related news, the Baath party in Iraq has re-named itself the “Cute bunnies, unicorns and pixy dust party” which is now leading all the others in the polls for the next election.
This apparently was their second choice — but Community Organizers International was taken already.
Authoritarians(liberals, islamists, socialists, communists etc) love names like this that are really the complete opposite of reality.
