Sources: Michael Williams may switch from Senate to US House run

If this happens it would be a big deal. And it may result in sending two very strong conservative voices to DC.

Former Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams, who announced his intention back in January to seek the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison, is likely to drop out of that race and instead run for a newly created congressional seat in House District 33, which contains his hometown of Arlington, sources tell the Tribune. …

Williams’ campaign consultant Corbin Casteel, confirmed the switch was impending. “Commissioner Williams has lived in Arlington since the early 90s when he returned to Texas after working for Presidents Reagan and Bush,” Casteel said in a statement to the Tribune. “His home has been drawn into a newly created Congressional district. He has received a great deal of encouragement to transition from the Senate race to run for Congress. Provided the new district does not change significantly, he will pursue the new congressional seat.”

Texas Republicans have been split, at least at the grassroots level, between Williams and former state solicitor general Ted Cruz for the Senate seat. There are other candidates in the race, from former Texas secretary of state Roger Williams to former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Ames Jones and perhaps Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, but Williams and Cruz, who are friends, have become grassroots heroes and are often touted as the future of Texas Republicanism. Should Williams switch to the House race, voters will not have to choose between him and Mr. Cruz, and may send both to Washington. The election of either would be remarkable; sending both to Washington to carry Texas’ conservative banner would be a game changer.

The Tatler interviewed Commissioner Williams when he began his run for Senate earlier this year.

Update: Ted Cruz, by the way, has been racking up endorsements: the Club for Growth, FreedomWorks, and Red State.
