The poetry fest is this Wednesday, and among the invitees is Lonnie Rashid Lynne, Jr., aka “Common.”
In fact, Common rapped at the 2008 New Year celebration at Wright’s church. “I’m gonna let you know / No people want drama / We gonna vote for my man / What’s his name? Obama … Revolution is here,” he sang, and the Rev. Wright danced in the background.
Some of Common’s poetry could also raise some eyebrows among those who might find cop-killing and racially-tinged or misogynist language beneath the Office of the Presidency.
“Tell the law my Uzi weighs a ton … I hold up a peace sign but I carry a gun,” raps Common in one appearance that was posted onto YouTube.
“Flyer say Free Mumia on my freezer,” he raps in another. Mumia Abu-Jamal is an incarcerated former member of the Black Panther Party who was convicted in 1981 for killing a Philadelphia police officer. Agitating for his release from prison has become a cause for many leftwing activists.
Common named his daughter after Assata Shakur, a Black Panther who was convicted of first-degree murder 1977. She escaped from prison and exiled to Cuba. The FBI recognizes her as a domestic terrorist.
Nice guy. Let’s have him and his pastor over at the White House. Who’s the pastor? Take a guess.
It is likely Obama met Common at the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s Trinity United Church of Christ were both men were members. Several of Wright’s sermons caused a firestorm of controversy during the 2008 presidential campaign due to their caustic, racially charged, anti-American tones. One sermon in particular caused Obama a severe headache – the one in which he blamed America for Osama bin Laden’s terrorist attacks. “America’s chickens are coming home to roost,” he said.
Here is Common’s tune “Be.” Language warning for extensive use of the n-word. Add that in plus his stance against interracial relationships, and he’s just the sort to deserve honors at America’s house.

Regardless of Common’s opinion, about Assata Shakur, it is irresponsible to somehow imply that Obama shares that same opinion. If you want to go down the list of Politicians associating with real terrorists (not rappers), I’m afraid your article would be rather lengthy. I’m sure, however, that you and others will try and make this into another Jeremy Wright circus.
‘I’m sure, however, that you and others will try and make this into another Jeremy Wright circus.’
==================================
as sure as you, and others like you, will continue to give 0bama a pass…
Only David Duke is as vicious a high profile racist as is Jeremiah Wright and his friend Farrakhan; Obama, while engrossed in one of Wright’s Hitler-like sermons, had to be tapped on the shoulder and told “This is wrong.”
Then, Obama gets out on the campaign trail and says “That is wrong.”
Go fish.
He is the President and it does matter. He represents all of us, expecially civilized people
President Obama is probably one of the finest men to ever have occupied that most important of offices, and certainly one of the most civilized, which becomes abundantly clear when contrasting his actions and words with those of his opponents over the last two and half years.
According to this juvenile delinquent, if I parse his “code” correctly, whitey makes him carry a gun but in reality he is a peaceful rascal like the 16 yr. moron who shot two British tourists to death in Sarasota recently, leaving behind 20 bullet casings.
Don’t blame Obama and his doofy protege: probably over 90 of black Americans think Mumia is not guilty cuz “the Man” is ever on the prowl for black folks.
This is because, according to stinking racist Michael Eric Dyson on CNN’s website, “There is a vicious prison system that hungers for young black and brown bodies.”
Political Correctness is the ideological platform of the Democratic Party and it is entirely centered around race and the mean profiling Republicans who are against wheel chair access and who wear scented colognes hippies are allergic to. In that fairy land, people who actually are racists call people who are not racists, racists. It’s a fun con game and Obama is the fun leader of it all.
They are so arrogant, they don`t even try to fake it anymore ….
Palin and FOX only say what they think their audience wants to hear as far as Neocon propaganda. This imprudent commentary has caused damage to the world view of America including critical comments such as this which expose not only racism and bigotry but the obtuse world-view of the people this kind of rhetoric seems fit to represent. I was compelled to create a visual commentary about this very thing on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/01/sarah-palin-made-me-do-it.html
Just what exactly does Common and the Trinity Church mean by saying, “We will create our own nation.” Isn’t that what Hitler wanted to do. Keep your eyes open and watch your back.
AAAAAAAAAHHH SCARY BLACK PPL WHO SAY MEAN THINGS ABOUT AMERICA ARE JUST LIKE HITLER!!!!!!
Christ you people are stupid.
Actually, Common opposes interracial dating. Isn’t that ironic?
You keep saying that but don’t prove it. I’m going to assert here that Bryan Preston supports man-boy consensual relationships. Does that make it true? No. At least I hope not.
Who cares?
I don’t see how any of these quotes are any worse than the genocidal bile uttered by most right wing pundits or prominent figures such as the late Jesse Helms or John Hagee.
I also don’t think that asserting Mumia’s innocence makes you a “cop killer supporter.” If that’s the case, then advocates of the Duke Lacrosse defendants were “rape supporters.”
Why is, as this article suggests, a black man mentioning a gun in a song in and of itself reprehensible? Would the same snap judgment appear on this site if it were a white country & western artist? I thought conservatives where such big fans of the Second Amendment.
Furthermore, not everything artists (be they poets, musicians, novelists or whatever) say and state in their works is reflective of their true positions: artistic license and all that jazz.
Finally, knowing a person or inviting a person to a social function does not imply that both parties agree on each and every issue one hundred percent.
Bottom-line: another facile attempt at tarring President Obama and his administration through underhanded innuendo and thinly-disguised dog-whistle politics. It’d be laughable if it wasn’t so tragic and, frankly, so un-American.
Really? “Be”? You chose probably the most inspirational, spiritual song in his catalog. He said the n-word like twice. Really? I mean, really? Also, where is the proof that he is opposed to interracial dating? Everyone who dates Erykah Badu has some sort of reverse racism rubbed off on them? Reading your article made me think that you would be opposed to interracial dating. You would probably write an article full of out-of context character assassination about the man dating your white daughter. Cracker.
This is a rapper thug that needs to be extirpated from the face of the earth. Obama is a hater of the white man and wants to destroy the accomplishments of white people whilst creating more handouts for blacks. Obama sides with cop killers and is no friend to the human race. Obama is a villain and so is that rapper POS, Common.
