The Arizona Independent filed a FOIA request respecting the President’s father and reports this is among the information they found in the immigration files:
1. “ The memo refers to Obama Sr.’s plans to attend the University of Hawaii for one more year to obtain his bachelor’s degree in economics, and that his spouse, a United States citizen, plans to work at the university.
“They have one child born Honolulu on 8/4/1961 – Barack Obama II, child living with mother (she lives with her parents & subject resides at 1482 Alencastre St.),” the memo states.”
2.” [T]he agency “recommend(s) that Subject be closely questioned before another extension is granted – and denial be considered. If his USC (United States Citizen) wife tries to petition for him make sure an investigation is conducted as to the bona-fide of the marriage.”
3.”Documents show that Obama, Sr. was denied an extension on his student visa in July, 1964, in part because Harvard University, where Obama, Sr., was a Ph.D. candidate, sought his removal. Obama Sr. eventually left the United States willingly after becoming an illegal alien for remaining in the country past the expiration of his visa.
An INS investigator, M.F. McKeon, wrote “They (Harvard officials) weren’t very impressed with him and asked us to hold up action on his application until they decided what action they could take in order to get rid of him. They were apparently having difficulty with his financial arrangements and couldn’t seem to figure out how many wives he had.”
Documents show that Harvard officials considered Obama, Sr. to be a “slippery character,” and conspired with the INS to have him deported.”UPDATE: Harvard responds to the story:

“While we cannot verify accounts of conversations that occurred nearly 50 years ago, a review of our existing files did not find any support for either the language or the implied intent described by the U.S. government official in the government documents,” Neal said.
Neal said that university documents predating the INS file, which was compiled between 1961 and 1965, indicate “the University’s Center for International Affairs faced serious constraints in providing financial support for research by international graduate students in Cambridge, and that these students were required to secure and demonstrate independent and sufficient sources of funding in order to remain on campus.”
Documents show Obama, Sr. was denied an extension of his student visa in July, 1964 and subsequently returned to Kenya. In 1965, Obama, Sr. attempted to return to the United States.
The INS file includes a letter from Harvard Registrar Robert Shenton written to Obama, Sr., on Nov. 16, 1965, that says the elder Obama had not registered his thesis title with the Department of Economics and therefore the university did not authorize his I-20, a document issued by a college for a student so that the student may obtain a student visa, for his return to the country.
“Under the circumstances, I could not consider issuing an I-20 to you until the following steps have been completed and the Economics Department approves your return,” Shenton wrote.
The steps required of Obama, Sr., included informing the Economics Department of the thesis title; informing the department of the status of his thesis; and sending the department any completed pages of the document. Neal said the university would confirm that Obama, Sr. was a student at Harvard from 1962-1964, and earned a Master’s degree in Economics.”
The White House has not responded to inquiries by the paper.

It was always his name. He went by Barry (by his own account) until a classmate at Occidental College asked him about it, and more or less implied he was ashamed of his name. He claims a more or less epiphany, and started calling himself Barack. In an official U.S. Government doc, however, you’d expect them to use his full, real name.

Nearly seven years after the master con man appeared on the national scene and 27 months after he siezed power, we are just beginning to learn a few of the secrets in his universe of lies. I have a background in international law. I have read the documents.
Although some names are redacted, it is apparent that the INS and Harvard both received a number of calls from the mother of the woman who would become Barack Obama Sr’s third wife, urging them to investigate (punish? deport?) him on the basis that he was engaged to her daughter while still “married” to somebody else.
The INS contacted the University of Hawaii, who confirmed that Obama had, indeed, married one of their students. What is not noted is that she had filed for divorce.
The INS and schools mention the “wife” in Kenya. One document, from UH, notes “He said all he has to do to get divorced is to tell her he wants a divorce”.
It is obvious from this statement that Barack Obama’s first marriage was not a “legal” marriage in international law. It is legal in Kenya, but only in “customary law” which is inferior to English law (which governed at the time of the “marriage”). It is a complex subject and difficult to describe in a short post. A “customary marriage” is matter between the couple and their families and does not involve authorities. There is no official ceremony, no exchange of wedding vows, no registry, no license. In the case of Barack Obama Sr’s first marriage, after a brief courtship he invited the woman to live with him in Nairobi; she went, against her parents’ wishes. The problem with her family was resolved when he bought the woman’s father some cows.
That fits the definition of “marriage” in customary law. This is not exclusive to Kenya. I’ve read about many other, similar cases – usually when the wife wants out of the “marriage” but wants to receive some kind of financial support from the husband. In customary law marriages, the wife has no rights whatsoever – including the right to voluntarily dissolve the marriage. Only the husband may dissolve the marriage, and it is a matter of saying, “I don’t want to be married to you any longer”.
That must have seemed impossible to Harvard, UH and (from the looks of it), the INS, but that is the case.
Actually, I think he was obliged to list his dependents in seeking financial aid and his accounts seemed to indicate he had entered into a bigamous marriage with Ann Dunham and was contemplating entering into yet a second bigamous marriage.

No one knows who Clinton’s father really was; Kennedy’s was a Nazi sympathizer and booze runner who fixed the election for him and then socked the family fortune away in a tax free Tahiti located trust fund; Gore’s dad was a segregationist; Kerry’s a fortune hunting lefty who apparently didn’t care much for his son. If Barack Obama Jr., a few years younger than me, was a regular guy, say a friend or coworker, and I knew his dad dumped him and his mom early on, I’d feel empathy and compassion for Jr. And cut him some slack for being awkwardly aloof and condescending at times. And if anyone else ripped him for being aloof and condescending I’d stick up for him, and relay the hard start he got in life. But he’s the president of the US. And he got to be president in no small part by spinning his story as an airbrushed narrative to get votes. So Jr. to me is a willing con artist in the whole issue.
Obama first pegged my BS meter during the 2008 presidential debates when he said, “We’re going to find Osama Bin Laden, and kill him.” All to prove he could wear big-boy long pants too in terms of foreign policy. Back then I got the gut feeling he was going to drag us in deep in Af-Pak. That he dragged us in even further deep with Libya was even worse.
It appears we finally did get Bin Laden. As to whether this will inflame Pakistan, I couldn’t yet say.

Actually, B, Sr. was a MUSLIM. He believed (erroneously, see Koran Surah 65) that saying ‘I divorce you’ three times (talaq, talaq, talaq) would dissolve the marriage. This is not from the Koran, rather it stems from a decree by Hazrat Omar, the second Caliph of Islam (~586-644 A.D.).
After marrying his third wife, he apparently had two more children with his first. It appears that they still considered themselves married.
