Does he have any evidence that Jared Lee Loughner ever listened to Limbaugh, even once? No. In fact, all evidence from Loughner’s age to his actions to descriptions of him by people who know him point to serious mental illness, probably schizophrenia. But hey, Dupnik is only the sheriff, it’s not like he has to rely on actual evidence to make his judgments or anything.

Your point about evidence is right on. This man is supposed to be a policeman, examining evidence dispassionately. Can you imagine being pulled over by this guy? What assumptions would he make? In his vivid imagination, are you already guilty of other crimes? Does he automatically expect that you’re hiding something in your trunk, or that you’re an armed killer?
I wasn’t thinking Charles Moose. “Mike Nifong” might be more appropriate here.
We should not forget that Dupnik is perhaps positioned to see that this lunatic knows which answers are the “right” answers for Loughner not to die. So while yes, this guy is a joke, it isn’t funny to have someone in his position acting like a political hack.
This political hack of a sheriff knew that he was responsible for this crazy kid being out on the street in spite of the history of multiple threats to others. People who had been threatened were told not to file formal complaints, probably because the sheriff knew his mother, a county employee. His wild accusations are part of an attempt to hide his own negligence.

I think there are a lot of things going on with this Sheriff Dipstick. No doubt some of it is CYA but I think that he wants badly his national fifteen minutes. And the only way he can get it is to repeat the MSM talking points.
He wants to take over for Olbermann after his head explodes on election night 2012.

Sheriff Dupnik knew Loughner had made multiple death threats to various people, but never pursued the charges. This man clearly seems to be blaming everyone but himself in an attempt to cover his butt.
Dupnik is directly responsible for these deaths. Anyone of
those threats would have had Loughner stripped of his ability to
purchase a weapon.

ago when first applying for jobs in law enforcement, political
leanings were something you didnt want associated with yourself,
it would keep you from being hired even as a entry patrolman. It
always baffled me why our Sheriffs are elected rather than handled
internally like the military.

Dupnik may well be the next Michael Nifong, but he’ll certainly never be a Charles Moose. If you’re still on box trucks you don’t know what you’re talking about.
I lived in the DC suburbs during that, and Moose was generally agreed to be out and in front. He got his bad rep nationally because he got fired, and he got fired because Montgomery County politicos didn’t like that he was going to profit off of his book.
I lived in the area at the same time – it later turned out that the duo slept in their car about a mile from where I worked at the time. Among other things, Moose failed to tell parents that the snipers targeted children, which was a fairly important fact to withhold.
The snipers didn’t target children, until the teenaged boy was shot (the one whose aunt was the army nurse and knew what to do). We know from trial that that’s when Malvo started to have doubts about what he was doing. That a child was shot was certainly never kept from the news–everyone was all over it that day. Again, this column and Michelle Malkin’s misremember Moose. Keep to Nifong–the spaghetti sticks to that wall easily.
I was living in Arlington at the time (the 7 Corners Home Depot where that FBI staffer was shot was “my” Home Depot) and while it’s true Charles Moose was “out and in front” he was also grossly incompetent, his fixation on a white van being only the most visible of his errors.

No, Dupnik is not responsible, not even indirectly. No more so than the talk show hosts are. Or Palin. Don’t do as he does.
The shooter is responsible.
But… Dupnik probably feels he does have some responsibility. Especially if it turns out that he did know about the death threats. That’s a normal human reaction (at least among non-crazies.) His response is probably driven by that feeling. When I first caught his act two days ago my knee-jerk reaction was to wonder what he was defending against. He was so much on the offense I thought it was due to projection. That first reaction is looking more and more correct.
I do agree that the voters should show him the door. He’s not a good cop.
Dirty Dupnik is just throwing this stuff out to cover up for his own active malfeasance. WHY were people discouraged from even filing complaints about Loughner? Who benefited?
Here is a question that is driving me crazy.
Why is no one in big media digging into the fact Jared Loughner had several run ins with the Sherriff’s office? He had made threats against multiple people multiple times and nothing was done why is that? It is obvious to me Dupnik is in full CYA mode I read somewhere that Loughners mother was a city employee (but this is not confirmed) was there influence from her to keep her son out of jail or the mental facility? That is what needs to be investigated this guy could have been stopped on multiple occasions if the police had bothered to do their job and I am beginning to suspect the Sherriff was up to his neck in it. He knows a fire storm will start if this gets to the MSM and thy pursue it, just based on what you posted above there is no doubt in my mind the Sherriff’s office dropped the ball on this one big time. This smells just like what happened with Katrina instead of putting the blame were it belonged on the state and city government the MSM went into full Bush derangement mode and laid all the blame were it did not belong as a result New Orleans is as vulnerable today as it was then.
