Why Obama Won — and What Conservatives Must Do
There are no ways to get around the facts. For Republicans and conservatives and independents who wanted a new direction for our country, the victory of President Obama is sad — and for many of us, unexpected. Those conservatives who assured us with statistics, theories, and arguments about Romney winning the White House, even in a landslide, should be eating their hats.
In the past week, conservatives who usually disagree with each other about many things, including Fred Barnes, Peggy Noonan, Dick Morris, my PJM colleague Roger Kimball, George F. Will, Karl Rove, and Michael Barone, among others, provided analysis and arguments, all of which led to predictions of an inevitable Romney victory. Instead of the outcome they all looked forward to and assumed would be inevitable given Obama’s failures and the state of the economy, they found that their theories collapsed as the returns poured in. Instead of a long night, by 11:30 p.m. even Fox News had called the election for the president. Yes, Karl Rove thought their statistics desk called it too early, but 15 minutes later he too agreed that Ohio had gone for the president.
So what happened? I had been trying to warn my optimistic friends in recent days that I thought Obama would win, and was regularly greeted with a slew of polls meant to prove I was wrong. So here are some of my thoughts and reactions, written before I can be influenced by the pundits who will be writing in tomorrow morning’s newspapers and appearing on TV talk shows.
First, the Obama campaign’s decision to frighten women worked. Republicans did not wage a campaign on social issues, but the Obama team ran commercials in all the major swing states emphasizing how Romney would try to outlaw contraception and prohibit their right to choose abortion if they felt there was no alternative, and that half the population would be threatened were a Republican elected.
Republicans lost the Senate with the two candidates who made outrageous statements that Romney simply dealt with by saying he did not agree; he refused to take away his endorsements, which would have indicated he meant business. No one expected the unpopular Claire McCaskill to win, but Todd Akin’s ridiculous statements led even her to win, and Richard Murdock’s outrageous views on rape as something God intended resulted in victory for his Democratic opponent. Without the Republican Party sticking to support for both these candidates, the Republicans might have been able to gain the Senate. With friends like these, conservatives became their own worst enemies, providing the ammunition for the Democratic charge that Republicans were waging a war on women.
Second, there is the hurricane factor. The nation saw Obama in his bomber jacket, accompanied by Republican keynoter Gov. Chris Christie as he visited the devastated areas of New Jersey hit by Hurricane Sandy. For the Democrats, it became the perfect storm that allowed the nation to believe what it wanted desperately to think — that Barack Obama had become a leader whom even the conservative governor of New Jersey worked with and praised for his leadership. The news coverage of Obama and Christie, and the governor’s effusive over-the-top praise of the president, hurt Romney in a significant fashion. Christie’s stance even led Bruce Springsteen to talk on the phone with the governor on Election Day, and to praise him for his working relationship with the president. Christie finally got the call from his hero that he had been yearning for. Gone, I think, are his chances to run for the White House as the Republican candidate four years from now.
Third: the Latino vote. The percentage of Latinos voting increased significantly, and although many are Catholic and socially conservative, the tough stance on immigration reform taken by Romney in the primary campaign hurt his chances of gaining enough of their votes. Republicans like Marco Rubio and Jeb Bush, both of Florida, were serious about conservatives developing a position more flexible and less dogmatic than the anti-immigration position of many conservatives. Their views, supported by the Wall Street Journal and most of the business community, were not that of most conservatives. When the voting statistics are tallied, I think we will find that with more Latinos voting for Republicans, Romney might have been able to do much better, if not win. As it is, he will have won far less than George W. Bush, who tried to develop a different policy but lost his fight to gain conservative support on the issue.
Fourth: The Republicans, who indeed may have obtained many of the white working-class vote (the so-called Reagan Democrats of past campaigns), cannot count on winning national elections and to be a national majority party if they count only on the votes of a diminishing white working-class and on the votes of Southern states alone. In this sense, the theory of John B. Judis and Ruy Teixeira of an “emerging Democratic majority,” which is based on their demographic picture of the electorate, is apparently beginning to prove fairly persuasive. That means that to win, Republicans have to change their strategy and the nature of the appeals they make to the country at large. It is not enough to say simply that “if we strongly advance conservative principles, we will win.”
Five: Romney did not convince voters, as Florida and Ohio voters said to the press who asked, that he cared for people like them. Obama, they said, showed that he cared and understood their problems. In other words, Obama was successful in his portrayal of Romney as a spoiled man of wealth who cared only for the profit of vulture capitalists, such as those at Bain Capital as it was portrayed by the Democrats.
Six: What does the future portend? Already, the centrist Democrat Lanny Davis penned an op-ed on Fox News’ website, arguing that he should make three phone calls to “three conservative Republican senators who care about the country and who want to solve problems more than winning ideological wars.” They are, he writes, John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and Orrin Hatch. Together, he argues, Obama can create a “broad center-left and center-right bipartisan majority congress and actually start to solve problems facing our country.”
Good luck, Lanny. My own belief is that the president will argue that the nation has given him a mandate and endorsed the policies he sought to pursue, and that he will do all he can to move the United States to the “fundamental transformation” he said was his goal in the 2008 election campaign. That means the opposite of any attempt for serious compromise, and a hunkering down to try to move ahead with Obama Care and other politically leftist programs. He will try to mobilize the nation against the Republicans, who managed to hold control of the House of Representatives.
Seven: So what should conservatives do, now that the nation has elected Barack Obama to a second term? The popular vote is fairly split evenly, and we are still a divided nation. Politically, there is nothing ahead but continued stalemate in Congress. The president will attempt to move ahead via executive branch fiat, thereby bypassing Congress.
In this atmosphere, it is foolhardy to give the nation evidence that failure to try and solve problems that are confronting us is the fault of Republicans and conservatives. Those opposed to the direction Obama favors should provide serious and meaningful alternatives of their own, and present them to the nation. They should do everything possible to reveal to the nation that it is the White House, and not the defeated Republicans, that is failing to deal with the coming crisis of a growing entitlement state.
In foreign policy, which is the most dangerous of the coming crises that will face the Obama administration, conservatives should relentlessly forge ahead on issues like the failure of the White House in the murders of our diplomats at Benghazi, which candidate Romney foolishly failed to deal with in the last days of the campaign, and to see to it that there is a change in direction from the failed policies of the past four years. It also means a continuing effort to raise the issue of the danger to the world of the growing radical Islamic movements abroad, to attack their ideology, and to make it clear that although Bin Laden is dead, his death did not put an end to a regrouped al-Qaeda.
Finally, it is essential that conservative intellectuals do not abandon the effort to change the culture, and to, in Gramscian terms (as the late Gene Genovese often put it), wage a war of position on the cultural front and to do all possible to challenge the ascension of a failed intellectual liberal ideology, whether it be in the form of Progressivism, liberalism or socialism. Whether it is called “the blue model” as Walter Russell Mead calls is, or something else, the intellectual fight against its assertions must begin with all the strength we can muster.
So we all have our work cut out for us. Let us hope our nation gets through the next four years, and that the president takes Lanny Davis’ call to heed, and does not act as I fear he will.

Fascism, contrary to the indoctrinatory lies from the academia’s left, is a socialist movement. Leftist academia, mostly communists that where die hard enemies of any other form of socialism, created this lie that fascism was right wing because nationalism, something these same academicians then associated with contemporary conservative movements, was amongst the things that comprised its platform. However, Romney made plenty of gaffes during the campaign. It is time for Republicans to realise that the position of the religious right on abortion is nothing but a vote loser for the party. Stay out of people’s lives is the best advice you can listen to on this subject.
Furthermore, maybe Romney’s comments on the 47% were truthful, but people can’t stand too much truth, especially if it sounds insulting. Biden capitalized on this gaffe and probably swung loads of votes Obama’s way.
Your Social Security would look a lot more secure with some 55 million more young people paying into the system. Think about that before you opine about abortion. A nation that allows for children to be killed because they conflict with parents’ short term plans is a nation that doesn’t have a future.

I might add that many of my generation, the baby boomers, are reaping what they have sown. When you live a life of irresponsibility and no consequences (never grow up) you eventually reap a bitter, useless crop. But, hey, you showed them–”it’s my life…no one is the boss of me!!” The trouble is, there are laws of God and laws of nature that you cannot contradict.
(Worse yet, many have raised children that have no connection with these realities…and are not equipped to function in the adult world.)

And if you are very rich, California is the place to be because you have the economic wherewithal to hire the best tax attorneys and tax accountants to shelter most of your vast income from really high income taxes.
And given your wealth, gasoline at ANY price, electric rates and ANY price, food at ANY price, …… and so on, are well within your financial reach.
In fact, to demonstrate your “green-ness” you have spent an extra 100 grand on your brand new 5 million dollar home to make it very “green.”

But let’s be very clear; if you are an average working stiff, YOU MUST, drive a Prius, or better yet, take the subway or bus or walk, use less electricity and other resources, live in a much smaller home, and, by the way, pay MORE for everything, including way higher taxes (because you do not have the real hi income level of the millionaire ruling progressive elites to establish trust funds or hire fancy shmancy tax attorneys/accountants to shelter your income).
The ultimate goals of the progressive ideology is already available to be viewed in Cuba and N.Korea (ruling elites living hi on the hog, and an impoverished citizenry), and the former USSR and E.Europe (ruling elites living hi on the hog and an impoverished citizenry).
What we see today in Cuba etc. – the ideology of FORCED EQUAL OUTCOMES – IS THE IDEOLOGY, of the liberal progressive, the ideology of Barack Obama and the (millionaire, elitist) democratic party.

My greatest concern w.r.t. California is that the state will eventually recognize that it is bankrupt (it is already – they just haven’t admitted it yet) and will then go to the Federal Government for a bailout. That position only reinforces the idea that mankind can cause weather to act badly; e.g., the global climate change hoax. Being energy independent erases that bias, while enabling the auto companies to build what the customers want.
It’s not the fault of the wealthy that we’re now facing disaster; it’s more the fault of an entrenched elite class and bureaucrats held to no account.

Suppose you meet someone who doesn’t like you, bad-mouths you at every opportunity, wants to take things from you that are rightfully yours and wants to spoil (er’ fundamentally change) the world in which you make your living.

Though I’m conservative, I was a little nervous about Romney winning because there is a perfect storm of factors (huge real-estate bubble in China, disintegrating EU (PIGS nations) and continued food and energy shortages) that all threaten stagnate the US recovery. Even if our next president did everything perfectly, he is fight a headwind economically. I was worried Romney would be in for four years, and after that four years, the un-employment rate would still be above 6.5% with huge numbers of under-employed. This is would be very bad news for a second term. However, now that Obama is re-elected, the blame for all of this will lay at the feet of the democrats (regardless of if they deserve it or not). Unless the President can work an economic miracle, democrats will be crushed in four years. There will be no more excuses, no more “There just hasn’t been enough time to fix the problems”, no more feeling guilty about voting the first black president out of office after his first term and no more being able to blame anybody else. Obama completely owns the next 4 years, and unless he can bring about serious economic improvement (against global economic headwinds), democrats will be slaughtered in 2016. Part of me is glad the mess of the next four years will all be laid at President Obama’s feet.

Instead, I fear they will conclude that the reason Romney lost is that he was too “radically” conservative. The days of a real fiscal conservative winning a national election are over, at least one coming from the Republican party.
Buy lots of ammo, stock up on long term food, become as energy independent as you can and be ready for the civil war that is surely to come as our government runs headlong in to fiscal insolvency, and the masses who have no idea where their “free” stuff comes from begin rioting in the street as forced rationing and mandatory confiscation are implemented by the government.
The sad, sweet irony is that when that day comes, the low information voters who handed us this mess will be the first and the hardest hit as they have ZERO life skills that will allow them to break away from the government teat.
Our only hope now is to take over all local politics, install hard core fiscal conservatives who are true patriots who believe in the promise that was our constitutional republic. Likely, these candidates will have to come from third parties as the Republican party will be utterly clueless about the need for it and will do everything in it’s power to defeat them from the grass roots level on up.
If I am right about all of the above, and I think I am, it only strengthens my resolve to remain resolutely bound to my core principals and the Judea-Christian based ethics that made this country great. I will fight to the last for what I believe is right.
Romney lost for several small reasons, not for a single glaring defect. His work at Bain, his great wealth, the blowback from the Akin/Mourdock debacles, his religion, the 47% comment, and of course, the media hated him. Those are what did him in.
Of all of those, the most damaging was the 47%. It reinforced his elitism, and being out-of-touch.

What you mentioned played a role but I think the debates cancelled out all of the above problems. This is an election we should have won and despite losing I think the defeat was more about tactical than structural problems – except perhaps the growing number of Hispanic voters – Marco Rubio should temper that problem at the Presidential level until we can find a way to get a conservative-friendly form of immigration reform through Congress.
I think it somewhat naive to think that Democrats care about “comprehensive” immigration reform – they don’t. They don’t because they know they can win the Hispanic vote and drive Hispanic turnout with the immigration issue as is. Democrats aren’t going to risk making immigration a non-issue for socially-conservative Catholic Hispanics and allow them to drift over to the Republican Party and likely future President Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz. But now on to what I think were easily correctable tactical mistakes that cost us this election.
1. Florida – It looks like we’ll lose by just 50k but Connie Mack, the GOP Senate candidate, lost by over ONE MILLION VOTES. If Jeb Bush was our Senate nominee he would’ve brought enough moderates, non-Cuban Hispanics and women voters over to give Mitt a victory in Florida.
2. Ohio – In hindsight it looks like Paul Ryan was the wrong “boring white guy” to put on the bottom of the ticket and it should have been Rob Portman.
3. Nevada and Colorado – I’m not surprised about Nevada but I am surprised we lost Colorado especially given how well early voting was going. Our media establishments should have done a better job of getting “Fast and Furious” into the minds of the Hispanic electorate; keep in mind most Hispanics in Colorado and Nevada are of Mexican origin and probably would not have looked to kindly on Obama for playing a role in the death of 300+ Mexican civilians. Whether this would have depressed turnout amongst Hispanics or convinced some of them to vote for Romney I don’t know but we should have made Fast and Furious a part of the discussion.
4. Virginia/All of the above – It is now obvious the resources we spent on Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan could have been better spent in Virginia, Florida and Colorado, states where Obama was not polling well enough to win (I don’t include Ohio since he was at 50 percent in quite a few polls). Would these ultimately wasted resources have guaranteed Republican victory? – I don’t know – but the “alternative path” strategy turned out to be useless anyway since we didn’t win Florida and Virginia.
You do realize Obama’s vote total fell by 10 trillion – a whopping 16%. Romney lost because 3 million fewer Republicans supported this industrious genius than supported bottom of the class McCain. Obama didn’t win. The Republicans lost. Radosh writes a column explaining the election without even looking at the results. Typical conservative pundit.
Very nice post. But, there is no tomorrow- the tipping point is here and there is no going back. When we run out of money, which will be soon, the Obama voters will be pissed. Just make sure you have plenty of ammunition.
If Romney had been elected, he would probably have pivoted to the center and tried to do in a competent and more fiscally balanced way — he does understand economics, after all — more of less the same things that Obama will now try to do in an incompetent and economically illiterate way. In that sense Romney’s defeat has undercut the ongoing attempt to convert the US to the European model.
Obama’s laziness will only grow as he decides to do everything he really cares about by decree, and in a few years or so Congress will have to impeach and remove him from office or admit that it is just a formality, a waste of time and money because it has lost any significant affect on what the US government does. My money is on Congress wimping out.
Obama is too feckless a personality to become a dictator, but he will establish toxic precedents about how US presidents can ignore Congress and the judiciary, trying to apply methods perfected by the Chicago political machine on a national scale. He will, historically speaking, be followed very quickly by a true American “first citizen” or “Big Brother” type who attempts to redress the economic and foreign policy chaos that Obama’s policies will create. There is every chance that future historians will write books with titles like
“From George Washington to Barack Obama: The Constitutional Era in American History”
It will be interesting to see whether any of the really close states in this election end up going Republican by a narrow margin. Mathematically speaking, if you separate out the close elections they should have a 50-50 chance of going one way or the other. If, instead, all or most of those elections go the same way, it becomes very clear that many of them were won with stolen votes. The reason is that fraudsters will try to steal elections by creating just enough phony votes for the outcome to go their way — creating lots of unnecessary phony votes only increases the risks of getting caught.
To show how this close-election analysis works, say both OH and FL go Dem. by very slim margins. The elections were close, so they both had a 50-50 chance of going either way. That they both went Dem would only be expected 1/2*1/2 or 1/4 or 25% of the time if both elections were fair. There would also have been a 25% chance of both elections going to the Rep. and a 50% chance of a split. If VA, OH, and FL all go Dem by small amounts, that would have occurred in a set of three close and fair elections only 1/8′th or 12.5% of the time. You see how this works. There is never any way to prove that it is impossible for all these close elections to turn out the same way, but eventually it quickly becomes overwhelmingly likely that vote fraud is happening.
One last thought about fraudulent elections: In principle it could be detected by post-election polling. Fraudulent votes have no real people connected to them, and after the election there is no time pressure to get the poll out. So, groups who suspect vote fraud could pay for a poll, one with an extremely large number of samples, ask the people being polled whether they had voted and who they had voted for, and end up determining — outside the poll’s margin of error — that vote fraud had or had not occurred. This could end up being much more effective than a recount when the corrupt government officials who ran the election are the same ones participating in the “recount”.
Forget about impeachment. Ain’t gonna happen. The Democrats would rather see this country turn into a smoldering pile of manure than turn on one of their own.

He was merely acknowledging that by reelecting a President as bad as Barack Obama the people of the United States have demonstrated that the America many of us thought we lived in is over. It is the realization that we are not really part of what America has become but merely residents. We don’t really owe loyalty to this new thing walking around in America’s clothes or to other people who happen to share a passport. Most of us didn’t want to face that unpleasant but liberating fact.

I agree. I thought Mitt Romney got better throughout the campaign. The final rallies were better than anything since Reagan. I have more respect for our nominee and less respect for the half of voters who voted for the incompetent evil incumbent instead. I’m also thoroughly disgusted with the biased news coverage and have been looking for some way to respond that they will feel financially. Maybe cancel my cable service?
Republicans are now the governor in 30 states. Maybe we should use our state level strength to roll back the absentee and early voting that’s killing us. 2012 showed that random slackers who have to be given free stuff and hauled to the polls in vans can overwhelm the effect of motivated conservatives who would have crawled over broken glass to cast their vote. In the end, being more motivated didn’t translate into more votes.

Actually, the state level is where any real change in the federal government will have to come from. Geniuses like this CW think that the system works like: “we won, shut up, will of the voters!” Well, we aren’t a democracy, we are constitutional republic and if one were to take a look at Article V, they would see that the states have ultimate power over the entire federal government: executive, legislative, and judicial. They can propose and pass amendments without any input from any elected or appointed federal office holder.

That phrase “wicked society and corrupt media” goes directly to the facts. You are so right. The dominant culture allowed her children’s souls to be poisoned by teaching them political correctness rather than independence, self reliance and love of country. And now we reap the whirlwind having produced the taking / entitled society that will be with us now, and growing, going forward.
And the corrupt media has been the ignored elephant nt then room at conservative media. Romney had only one or two chances to make a direct impression, unfiltered by the decadent media. It’s BEEN time for secession. What would happen if the former Confederate States seceded again, and took other like thinking states with them? We wouldn’t have the slavery issue to deal with anymore. The former Confederate States have self reliant and (dare I say it) Christian people and those people could certainly forge a decent economy. They’d throw the illegals out on their collective asses by mandate or violence if need be. They wouldn’t abort their future children like the heathen. They wouldn’t have a huge standing army, but they’d have the weapons ready to be manned if the need arose. All healthy males would have to go basic training and know how to work those weapons. The government would keep its nose out of the people’s lives. If a business failed, the government wouldn’t hand it the PEOPLE’S money to stay afloat. Criminals would be executed for capital crimes, not housed, clothed and fed at taxpayer expense. With no standing army, such a nation wouldn’t fly its military off to other countries to fight THEIR wars for them.

The Romney campaign couldn’t have been a more perfect test case for whether an anodyne fiscal conservatism, stripped of (or embarrassed by) any social or religious concerns, can suffice to win over the ballyhooed “middle.” It can’t. I believe that a large number of Obama voters share them. The only way to win this debate is to engage them in a serious way. My policy as a general principle is 2-2-2. 2% decrease in spending across the board, not cherry-picked, including the military, 2% increase in taxes, focused mostly on the 1%, but in a token fashion applied to everyone; and 2% more taken out of pension payouts via a variety of changes. Gay marriage is fine with me; I don’t like abortion, but am not going to be very proscriptive about what the mother carrying the foetus decides.

If Benghazi had happened under a GOP president, they would have hammered him 24/7 with it, but because it was Obama they collectively yawned.
Everything I have seen released on this matter only makes this administration look worse. It is pretty clear that Patraeus lied to congress and Obama lied to the people. We are getting some timelines, although some are in conflict and the time line I most want to see is the one Obama will never release-the one of what the president was doing and each decision he made as the attacks unfolded.
My hope is that now that the media has gotten their guy elected they will cover this story-if for no other reason than that the American people deserve to know the truth, but the media seems to only care about the truth when the truth harms the republican in office or seeking office.
I am still ticked off that the story the day after our Ambassador was murdered was Mitt Romney’s gaffe. I am willing to be there was more Sunday Morning talk show coverage of the Romney gaffe than the Obama failure (Fox News excluded).
I hope the House continues to pursue the truth, but they will probably get stonewalled by Obama and the media will participate in the stonewalling.

That reminds me of the situation just before the War of Southern Independence. The South was being told what to do by the industrial North and tariffed on their cotton to an extreme. Finally the South got fed up and seceded. But the tyrant Lincoln wanted his precious Union at any cost and attacked us.
The first thing that needs to be acknowledged is that the pundits and polsters lacked any situational awareness regarding the political psychology that was on the street. Their lack of contact with reality misled a multitude, including me. I will never be able to trust these people as a class ever again.
The intellectual fabric and DNA of our nation, and much of western thought is being eroded away by half truth and intellectual laziness. I got into a debate with a brother in law two years ago about the durability of civilizations. He theorized that societies atrophy and wither because decay is part of the natural order of things. I disagreed at the time, but his observation caused me to think about whether he might in the long run be right. Tonight I realized he was correct.
Our nation is now in the hands of a very destructive intellectually limited collection of statists. I think right now it is unlikely to remain as the founding fathers envisioned. Instead, it is likely to be disembowled by those amoung us who find our history and traditions foreign and disorderly.
The United States is on the path to join a long list of other societies that exist only historically. It appears that decay is the primary force in human affairs.

Carroll Quigley, in The Evolution of Civilizations: An Introduction to Historical Analysis, has another take on this subject that I’ve found fascinating – and possibly more correct. He postulated that Western civilizations proceed through the following stages:
1. Mixture – different societies come into contact and produce a society with an outlook different from any of the combined parts.
2. Gestation – the period of time between the mixing of the different societies and the expansion of the civilization.
3. Expansion – the surplus generated by the society is invested in activities that benefit the civilization. This can include an increase in knowledge, increase in physical area, technological advancements that increase efficiency, etc. Civilizations make use of different instruments of expansion. Quigley calls a social organization or unit an instrument if it meets social needs.
4. Age of Conflict – The rate of increase resulting from the use of one or more social instruments slows down which results in “interesting times”. The instrument can be reformed or a new instrument consistent with the civilization’s outlook can circumvent the old instrument. If reform is achieved, a new age of expansion begins. If the vested interests of the previous instrument of expansion increasingly consume resources while serving no social needs, Quigley says that the instrument has then become an institution. Expansion can continue, but it is at the expense of neighbors, which leads to imperialist wars. When the vested interests have crushed all internal opposition, the next stage appears.
5. Universal Empire – typically a state or political unit on the periphery of the civilization gains power over the whole civilization. The illusion of a golden age appears. The social organization remains stagnant.
6. Decay – lack of belief in the civilization’s outlook or inability to meet needs of the people leads to people opting out of the system. An age of cynicism, low cunning and despair.
7. Invasion – external forces disrupt the civilization’s social organization and it is unable or unwilling to defend itself. That spells the end of the civilization.
Quigley stated that modern Western civilization as embodied by America has succeeded in arriving at the brink of the Age of Conflict stage no fewer than four times, but has always managed to reinvigorate itself by launching into a new Age of Expansion. Recall that expansion in Quigley’s terms doesn’t necessarily apply to the acquisition of new territory. If he’s correct, we’re now out of options, and that we’ve progressed rapidly through to stage 6. As you may know, I have my own ideas about what’s going on with respect to the role that the will to power has played in modern times.
I see Quigley’s sequence as less “more correct” than Toynbee’s than a refinement of same, much the way the Wheeler-Feynman time-symmetric theory is a refinement of Einstein’s General Theory rather than an alternative to it.
Quigley’s stages more-or-less subdivide Toynbee’s, resulting in a more accurate description of the events in each stage and their interelationshp. Thus, Quigley’s “Universal Empire” stage is basically Toynbee’s “Golden Age”, while Toynbee’s “Time of Troubles” Quigley subdivides into “Decay” and “Invasion”.
What both have in common is predicting that after the Fall, there will be an interregnum before the rise of the next great civilization.
BTW, I would say we are uncomfortably close to the “Invasion” stage, right now. “Decay” has been going on since I was in elementary school. As one example, when my father was a police officer in the 1930s and 1940s, the heaviest armament in his cruiser was a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, and the only thing he ever actually used other than a nightstick was his .38 Special revolver, which in fifteen years on active duty he fired on duty exactly once.
Thirty-odd years later, I carried a .45 caliber automatic, backed up by a 12-gauge pump and sometimes a .30 caliber carbine. And I was just a crime-scene tech.
(All of the above was required by regs. My other option on the sidearm was a .357 revolver- period. And the carbine was in preference to a .45 caliber SMG, usually an Ingram, a weapon I had little use for due to its near-uncontrollability in full-auto fire.)
Today, most departments issue 9mm automatics, have pump or semi-auto 12-gauge guns in the cruiser, and many (including ours here) have selective-fire carbines in .223 in the trunk.
If we’re so much more “civilized” now, as our “enlightened ones” claim, why are our streets so much more dangerous?

The Tea Parties have been a mixed blessing. Yes, they bring energy to an innervated party still undecided on whether it wants to be Rockefeller/McCain party or a Gingrich/Ryan party. But they have simply got to stop presenting us with candidates like Akin and Mourdock and Angle who have no message discipline and can’t be trusted in front of a microphone lest their bizarre ideas leak out. For God’s sake and the sake of the Republic, develop better grooming and vetting standards!!!!!!!!!! Do what Gingrich did: identify appealing young people, get them some useful experience, groom them for bigger stages, school them in message, and get them on the ballot.
You will never find candidates with more message discipline than Romney and Ryan. Those two have nearly inhuman self-discipline. And while it got them far, it wasn’t good enough. There will never be anyone better than they, so message discipline isn’t any route to success. And neither is “clarity” or “speaking up.” They laid out a very clear difference with Team Obama, and they spoke up just fine on his important failures and follies. Benghazi is a vicious evil screw-up, but it ranks up there with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, or Reagan’s retreat from Lebanon, or any number of other sleazy but small-bore Presidential sins. The IMPORTANT stuff was running the entire engine of American enterprise off the cliff into an endless vicious cycle of predation and parasitism that will destroy the spirit of the republic. R & R pointed this out perfectly clearly, and the voters, with eyes open, rejected it.
And, frankly, I think what we’ve now seen is that there isn’t a route to success any more. There is no solution to this problem. You’ll note that once statist enervation and decline set into the British Empire, it didn’t really turn back. There was a brief Indian Summer during the Thatcher years, but aside from that, it’s been a pretty straight line decay from 1919 onward. The British lion is a joke. Same with France, Germany.
In the West, we’re the Romans, circa 300 AD. The party will go on for a while, but the end is in sight, for those with foresight. The cancer is already metastasized, and there is no cure, but the patient can still dance a mighty fine two-step and slam down the margaritas with gusto tonight. Woo hoo!
The interesting question is what will replace us (culturally, I mean. Genetically, we will probably have descendants in the new regime, who vigorously reject our philosophy). The GOP actually has some appealing young people, and I agree grooming them is the best move to make. The party needs to move away from the “it’s his turn, they paid their dues” crap.
The only problem I see is that the DNC is very good at identifying our promising young candidates and effectively assassinating their character so as to make them unviable as candidates. The DNC has all but destroyed Bobby Jindal for national office and he is probably one of the brightest and eloquent young GOP governors we have.
I also think a good move would be to create another contract with America type move-only problem is while it might be a message that appeals in 2014, I am not sure if the last 2 years of a lame duck presidency is going to get much done.

All those “slutty” white women are not really looking for fun and lots of sex — although that’s what they may consciously think — as they are looking to become mothers with someone (or the government) to support them as they raise their kids. (Biological imperatives are extremely powerful but the most basic ones tend to work in hidden ways.) A married woman raising young children, depending on her husband’s income and with no desire to have that income taxed away for frivolous reasons, will vote sensibly.

Again, rather harsh rhetoric to make a valid point. Republicans need to decide if they want to nurse their fear of immigrants, or win elections? Latinos now constitute almost 17% of the US population, the second largest ethnic group after “white” Americans. Do we all know who gets included as “white”? Italians and the Irish, to name two ethnic groups which also were formerly considered “other” and unassimilable.
I am convinced if the House passed the dream act tomorrow and then declared open borders that the Latinos other than Cubans would still march in lockstep to the polls to vote for the liberal.

I was on the phone with an old colleague yesterday exchanging election predictions; sadly I got it right. We were talking about this very subject. We’re both early ‘Boomers and spent most of our working life with our age and demographic cohort and the last decade or so as high-level managers supervising younger workers, mostly 20-30-somthings. We were trying to think of the people we knew who were still with Spouse 1.0 and out of the dozens of people who over the years had worked with or for us, could only think of two couples that were together when we first met and were still together today. Other than those two couples, every man I know has been left by one or more wives who simply didn’t want to be married anymore or who had found somebody who made more or, at least for the moment, curled their toes better. Other than those two, every woman I knew had been unfaithful to one or more husbands/partners, and, yes, in some cases I have first hand knowlege.

My oldest, age 41, lives quite well but at the price of constant fear of the buyout or hostile takeover that causes her to show up to work one day and find her key doesn’t work any more. My stepkids, age 26, 28, and 30 will never live as well as we have to some degree as the result of their own popular culture driven choices and to some degree because of the Soros coup d’etat.
I’m not a secessionist nor a Go Galt type, though there’s more than a bit of Galt sympathy in me. I’m going to tend my own vegetables and look to the politics of my own still Red but trending Purple states. I’m not going to care much what happens in the Blue places, but if you come here, I’ll be happy to ride to the sound of the guns.

While there are certainly those who might not like the tone or ideas Whiskey is expressing in his opinion, the simple, factual case is that he’s closer to the mark than anyone else responding here, especially in citing the truism that demographics is destiny.
Here are the some of the demographic groups that Obama can count on with 80% to 90% favorability:
- Jews
- Blacks
- Homosexuals, Transgender, etc…
- Single woman of all races, ages (bet this one is surprising!)
- PhD’s, all disciplines
- Stupid white people, all ages and sexes
And here’s where he has a very comfortable majority – about 60% or more:
- Hispanics
- Pagans, atheists, agnostics, and non-Christians in general…
- Union members
- graduate students
Other than union members and Jews, all these demographic groups are growing…. significantly.
The ONLY demographic group that the Republicans have as a base, are white married people who go to church. In particular, Protestants. And even amongst those, only about 60% majority. Sadly, the-white-people-who-go-to-church demographic is rapidly shrinking, with no signs of slowing down.
For the first time in American history, single adult woman outnumber married adult woman. Think about that….
The liberals control our schools, our entertainment and our media. Basically everything that makes up what we call culture. And because of that, their political and social messages absolutely dominate the USA. Their base will only expand, the conservative base will only contract for the foreseeable future.
I’ve seen many neighborhoods and counties, and even the entire state of Illinois become overwhelming Democratic in my lifetime. It use to be that the Democrats ruled Chicago and a few suburbs, but Republicans controlled almost everything else, even Cook County. But now the whole state is controlled by the Chicago-Democrat machine, with the notable exception of most of the rural counties. But there’s far too few people in these counties to make a difference, as the rural American demographic is also shrinking rapidly.
Having said all that, I think this is about as good as an outcome as we can hope for. Mitt did not run a perfect campaign, but he did far more right than wrong. As for Obama, all he had to do is show up.
Our country is, truly, becoming more liberal in every way, everyday. The signs and signals are all around for those smart enough to read them.
People greatly deceive themselves if they think electing a conservative President is going to change this, as that is the wrong place to start. Obama is simply the summation of what we’ve become as a nation, like it or not. It’s not the president who is going to change the way things are moving….but the people.

Two point, Mr Radosh. First, I disagree that Republicans should cave on the illegal immigration issue. Illegals are illegal and bending over backward to enable these folks to gain their ill-gotten rewards is a slap in the face for those who – like my spouse – came here legally and followed the rules. If pandering to the illegal vote is your prescription for Republican victory, I’d rather stick with principle and lose with dignity. Opening our borders is no answer – it simply means this great nation will die even sooner. Illegals by definition don’t care about our laws and certainly don’t respect our culture. In any case, the Democrats have already made themselves the party of the illegal vote. If you want us to throw open our borders, then you are as historically illiterate and as nationally suicidal as they are. Encouraging illegal immigration is a recipe for suicide and we may already be too far upon that road to stop it.
Second, I submit that your recommendations for building a new consensus are incorrect. The Democrats have built a coalition of government parasites. The only way to eat into that coalition is to promise more than the Democrats. That is also a recipe for suicide. I would say that we must make a strong and continuous case on the actual facts of our financial situation and work on persuading the people that this cannot continue. if we fail due to the media and the Democrats’ duplicity, so be it. We cannot win a pandering war with the party of corruption. And if we cannot win this argument on the merits, then it is time to bury the Republic, for it is surely doomed, as de Toqueville foresaw.
Finally, I would say that commenter Samizdat is absolutely correct that nations tend not to endure. And America is more unstable than most. Most nations share some ethnic, racial, or linguistic bonds – bonds this nation completely lacks. We have only an ideal to hold us together. However, the ideal of America has been destroyed by a steady Leftist assault for the past hundred-plus years. They have now succeeded. And based on my own study of history, I would say we will be lucky to survive another hundred years. Look how far we have gone down the road to serfdom in a mere hundred years (the 16th and 17th Amendments, SSI, Medicare, the Great Society and we’re not even mentioning the Fed). And as the Democrats well know, once they push through one of their plans, the Republicans cannot repeal it thanks to their inability to ever get a filibuster-proof majority in the Congress.

I didn’t want to believe it either, but this election shows we have reached the tipping point where the takers outnumber the producers. Maybe a small part of the problem is illegal immigrants, but from my vantage point, for every illegal immigrant on welfare there are about 20 American citizens sucking the life out of our economy. Let’s face it, Mitt Romney wasn’t some super special candidate who got cheated out of a deserving win. For those of us who can’t stand Obama it was any port in the storm but for everybody else it was just…meh, whatever, Obama’s not great but there’s no reason to believe Romney is going to be all that much better. So they stayed with the guy who’s already in there, enough did anyway. At least that’s what my Democrat friends tell me, they don’t like Obama, don’t like the drone strikes, that he can kill American citizens with no due process, don’t like Gitmo still being open, don’t like much of his agenda at all. But there’s nothing Romney had to offer them on any of that.
Some of it was probably an unwillingness to let go of the last remnants of their 2008 dream and some of it is still a fundamental distrust of the GOP because of the Bush years and a somewhat delusional belief that Obama represents a repudiation of the Bush agenda. That’s going to take more time to wane, at the national level anyway.
Keeping in mind that Romney spent zero time talking about Afghanistan where our soldiers and Marines continue to die on a regular basis, it’s like we’re not actually at war anywhere. And he had nothing to say about Libya either. Or Iran or Syria. We can blame that on the media but Romney had the microphone, especially at the last debate and said nothing. Maybe there’s nothing to say. But if there was, he didn’t say it.
But I think Obama is pretty much irrelevant now anyway. He can’t run again. Other Democrats will now be figuring out how to get the great prize for themselves in 2016 and they aren’t going to want to be dragged down by him. I think what we do now is try and hold the line, fight everything as much as possible and try to maintain the status quo. Which after all is what the people have voted for, the status quo. Strangely enough, at this point I think birthers and those who think like them have the best answer. Get it widely accepted that his digitally released birth certificate has been falsified (that doesn’t, of course, prove he was born outside the US, but it does show what a liar he is), then both Obama is profoundly discredited and so are the media who for so long ignored what was right in front of their eyes. There is good reason to believe that if Obama is ever truly and thoroughly vetted, the results would so discredit him and his media enablers that it will become clear that — had the discreditable facts been known before either of his elections — he would have lost. When that happens, all of his actions (including the toxic increase in presidential power by decree) will lose legitimacy because it will be widely recognized that he never should have held office.

The problem with the GOP reaching out to minorities (which is something they must do) is that they’re not fiscal conservatives who just happen to support open borders policy. In other words, they’re not libertarians. Far from it, actually. So even if Jeb Bush or Marco Rubio reach across the aisle and compromise on amnesty supported by conservatives, most of the Latinos will still clash with the center right’s position on pension reform, low taxes, affirmative action, and the like.
The uncomfortable paradox is that for the GOP to come back like they did in 2010, the economy has to continue to stink across all states and demographic. The Obamania deflated by 2010, and it might be even shorter this time. But that’s ultimately wishing harm on yourself and your family. But it will probably happen, because I don’t see the nation flourishing after Sandy, much of Asia locked in protectionist mode (thanks to their nasty land dispute), and Obamacare just around the corner.
What would happen theoretically if another catastrophe hit GM and the auto industry? Do we speak so loudly against bailouts this time, knowing that auto workers in Ohio bailed out by the government voted for Obama? (1 in 8 Ohio jobs are apparently connected to the auto industry) Should we heed pleas from our libertarian friends who caution against high defense spending further adventures in the middle east, even though defense contractor types probably turned that state blue?

Granted the scum on the Left were eager to see Bush assasinated, but the end result would be the Canonization of St. Obama similar to how JFK was treated. JFK was really not that great a president, but for decades he was hallowed until finally reality caught up to his canonization.

I’ve read the sentiments, and from what i have gleaned from the serious replies to the over-reactive is that the next four years will plot the course of America’s future. And generally it is seen to be a downward trajectory. We are seeing this through the prism of defeat because a lot emotionally was put into this one. It has been a four year buildup – a lot of capital, energy and as it turns out false hope – and in the end, we wound up right back where we started.
This defeat needs to be seen as the new true fresh start. No more secret muslim stuff, no more birth certificate stuff – these are irrelevancies that took away from the goal; toys for the idle mind. Start at the bottom, find out who the talented conservatives really are, not the ones who pay lip service to the Party for the sake of getting in. And I mean the Christian far right and the Tea Party when I say that last line. These are people with agendas outside the best interests of the Party and cannot be relied upon to act in the Party’s interest.
The Republicans do not have the star power of the left, stop trying to manufacture it. Cultivate the talent there is and get it out at the grass roots to attract people. And for God’s sake stop moping. Have a night, take a deep breath, have the stiff one of your choice (double entendre?) and get ready for tomorrow.

I seem to remember 2 lowly reporters at the WaPo., who managed to start a gradually accelerating fire-storm, that brought down an entire administration. The conservative/libertarian voices of reason are being portrayed as religious crackpots, secret racists, or other various Thought Criminals by the dominant power in public relations: The News. The greatest spinners of all (the media) are not elected by anyone, nor are most of the spokespeople for the various special interests which shape much of the public policy in our world. The relatively slow cycle of American governance and electoral politics is sadly gamed in a 24/7 countercycle of Entertainment/news. We must first win the war of “who will tell the story”. So far, one lonely television network and various talk/radio stations,though energetic, have not succeeded in this endeavor. More must be done in this battle of ideas, to consider the framing context , not only the substance of the message, as superficial as this might seem.
If you are banking on the media doing anything beyond its continued worship and covering for Obama you need to put down the strong spirits.

The Unites States elected President Santa Claus in 2008 and reelected him in 2012. Which is exactly the same as European voters have done with their elections for decades now, with very few exceptions (and most of the exceptions there broke up quickly because those governments didn’t have the broad backing needed in their parliaments to survive the inevitable vote of no confidence over the very first budget cuts they proposed).
The majority of voters couldn’t care less about foreign policy, as long as cheap Chinese imports keep flowing to Walmart where they shop on monday, work on tuesday, picket against “unfair competition for local companies” on wednessday, protest against “cheap Chinese products that destroy US companies” on thursday.
There were millions of folks who voted for Obama who don’t get a check from the government. Telling us about why the “47%” voted for Obama instructs no one.

We need to keep Republican control of state houses and Governorships and nullify all we can coming from DC. If DC cuts funding to those states, just kick out the welfare people and privatize the schools. That will take care of most of it. With any luck Conservatives will pour in to make up the shortfall and the influx of productive people will improve state economies.
But that’s wishful thinking. I haven’t had faith in the Republican Party for some time and it is all but dead after McCain and Boner and other RINOs in charge. Most likely we’ll fight a rear guard action against the liberals until Obama really cracks the whip and government openly attacks us. Most likely this will start in a few years when Obama has managed to collapse the economy and health care system and needs scapegoats to blame. Then the axe will fall on business owners, etc. then spread out to all who oppose his brilliance and the media, liberals and Boner will praise his wisdom and righteousness.

Commenters on Hotair are saying that Obama got 10+ million votes less than he did in 2008, which should have sank him big time, but Romney got 3 1/2 less than McCain did. How can Romney have gotten less than McCain? Could it be that a lot of California votes have not been counted yet and/or a lot of absentees?

4) Voter Fraud and Intimidation works

Find out who is registered as a D in your precinct and vote early for them. Since asking for ID is Racist, then there shouldn’t be any further call to implement it

5) Any state whose local party can not deliver the votes in the general election, gets their delegate count cut in half. Any state that has an open primary gets no votes at the convention
Compare the states whose primaries resulted in Romney’s nomination against those that he actually carried. Tell me again why VT, MA, IA, VA, CA etc are picking the Republican nominee?

What’s wrong with Virginia are the northern counties and Hampton Roads. Federal parasites are swarming out of DC into those areas and turning a once Republican state into a Democrat mess. I really believe this came down to Obama convincing enough people that George Bush caused the recession. In other words, Obama convinced the country (or enough independents) that TAX CUTS made people not pay their HOME LOANS. I’m interested to see the women tally. Polls had Romney closing the gender gap, but maybe that wasn’t true. Also, Mourdock simply said that a the circumstances of a person’s conception and birth do not devalue that person’s life. It’s not comparable to Akin’s weird, wrong comments. I’m pretty mad at Akin, but Mourdock was trying to honestly deal with tough moral issues.

There’s nothing mysterious about the outcome of this election. Obama’s message “I suck, but the other guy’s worse” won out. Obama convinced the electorate, with help from MSM and Bill Clinton (author of the housing crash), that electing Mitt Romney would reverse what pitiful gains were made (real or not) in fixing the economy, and bring us back to September 2008. In 2008 Obama defeated McBush. In 2012 he defeated Mitt Bush.
You have hit upon one of my favorite complaints, that Republicans and conservatives abandoned George W. Bush 43 when the sledding got tough, and allowed the media and the Democrats to set up an unchallengeable myth that the Bush administration was an unqualified disaster and is to blame for the economic woes we now face. It didn’t help any that Bush wouldn’t fight back. The alleged failures of the Bush administration have become the everyday excuse for Obama no matter what the problem and an albatross for Republicans that may take a generation to wear off. But that lie is exposed every day by the similarity of many of Obama’s policies to Bush’s own.
But whether he was right or wrong, our failure to stand up for him is now having direst consequences. The Democrats NEVER admit wrongdoing, and never abandon their constituencies or their politicians, at least not until the final appeal and the jail door slams shut. Thus the housing crisis – what housing crisis? – that is mostly traceable to Democrat policies and officials, has glided beneath the radar while the financial collapse it precipitated is – you guessed it! – Bush’s fault.

Then you need a plan on how to help the moms and children in any situations where the law would require she carry the child to term. You cannot continue to be painted as the party who only cares about kids until they’re born. You need a plan for that.

I see one of two possible paths back for this nation.
One is to retake academia and the media from the Gramscian socialists who took those institutions over decades ago. This would be a long process, and I see no guarantee of success.
The other, more likely option is to sit back and watch as the US economy collapses as the parasites and moochers of the Democratic Party push their masters to loot more and more from the producers. The problem with this is that there may not be anything left to save once the collapse is complete.

Republicans need to re-engineer their economic principles to fit the modern world. Republicans need to realize three essential facts: (1) BUSINESS is not an unalloyed good. BIG BUSINESS is not in favor of economic opportunity, competition, innovation, or building wealth in a community. BIG BUSINESSES favor protection of their own place in the market and in earning big bonuses for their managers. A BIG BUSINESS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE agenda is not an agenda designed to create economic opportunity and growth in our communities. Republicans need to craft pro-growth economic policies with an understanding that BIG BUSINESS is actually not their ally. Small business is the Republican friend and the small business growth agenda is not the big business growth agenda; (2) FREE TRADE HAS FAILED — all economic policy ventures will fail so long as large corporations outsource jobs. Until Wal-Mart stops stocking goods made in China, Mexico, etc. the economy will move no where; (3) Wall Street is not main street. Wall Street makes money for itself by moving money around. Main street makes money the old fashioned way, by making things. The basic economic truths have not changed. You make wealth by growing things, mining, milling, refining, and manufacturing. You generate cash profit in banking. You create wealth with manufacturing.
It’s very simple. The dems use psychologists as their guide dogs to the political promised land. They asked these people how to get from here to yonder and they told them how to do it.
There was a point about a year and half ago when the political adults in the dem party realized that O being O, as in his “alligators in moats” and “bring a gun to a knife fight” and “our enemies” comments, was not going down too well. So, they brought in the professional people manipulators and they came up with things like the Fluke affair, the war on women, Occupy, and myriad others. And all of it worked because, as the manipulators well know, the mind of your average (and on down) intelligence type can be reshaped as easily as clay.

You want to know why Romney lost? The Gallup Polling in 2012 reminds me of the telephone polling from the 1936 presidential election that had Alf Landon beating FDR. Remember, Democrats are more likely to be in arrears (some intentionally, as in “walking away” from mortgages) and fear that any unfamiliar telephone number on their caller ID is that of a creditor.
We failed because we could not muster the courage to obliterate obama by exposing his true history which would have exposed his true agenda. Romney lost the election in the last debate. I had a sinking feeling in the first few minutes. He had Obama on the ropes, teed up to expose him for the corrupt liar that his is, and didn’t do it. I agree. When one is more concerned with being called a racist than with cultural survival and success, it’s over. Only the West does this because they are over-refined and decadent; so far from Mother Nature that too much common sense has simply fled the West. The West is an airport at the service of diversity, multiculturalism and the Third World. We no longer believe our own eyes or history at what we have accomplished. We think any one can do it. If that were true they would have – they have not.
The Dems have successful sold the narrative that the Third World and minorities have not because of white racism, imperialism and colonialism. It will be stipulated those effects will last as long as success eludes our new partners. Therefore that narrative will last forever. You cannot change water to sand.
For the past several elections, starting with Bush the elder, I’ve held my nose and consistently voted against the Democrats and for someone I personally did not care for. I’m done doing that, I’ve resigned from the Republican party. The two party system has created a world where tyranny comes in two distinct flavors: Social tyranny from the Republicans and economic tyranny from the Democrats. Both parties are 100% invested in their own vision of big government and totally focused on remaining in power.
From now on, I’m supporting the candidates who are committed to the constitution and liberty. If they happen to be Libertarians, so be it. If that means that I’m “throwing away” my vote, then too bad. Where else does a fiscal conservative, and social liberal who believes strongly in the constitution go?
A great deal of what’s wrong with this country is due to the strangulation of the two party system giving us a choice only between bad and worse.
Why Obama won. He bought it fair and square. Why Romney lost? He brought a pillow to a gun fight.
So the top two reasons that Obama won, according to this author, is basically media bias. It’s not the person but “how well they are represented”. A lot of people are still licking their wounds from the the 2008 crash and the challenger’s elixir of dropping taxes for the most wealthy while increasing spending on the military is not the salve the public were looking for. Forming your own palatable reality just like the landslide-predicting pundits listed at the beginning of this article will do little to help Republicans win the next election.
Massive voter fraud.
The fundamental political/economic problem we face is that the public wants more government benefits than it is willing to pay for. Obama’s plan to tax the wealthy by a little bit more will make no dent in the deficit and was a cynical and successful ploy to define Republicans as the tools of the super-rich.
There is no way for the US out of its debt problems without both painful spending cuts and increased taxation. Make no mistake, the extraordinary spending spree of the past four years was paid for by massive transfer of wealth from savers (particularly from older people on fixed incomes)through artificially reduced interest rates, to pay for unemployment insurance and food stamps as well as continuing to keep states from being bankrupted by outlandish pensions for public employees.
It is also financed by the cost of many commonly used products imported from poor countries that can produce them cheaply due to far lower labor costs. But this will reach a tipping point where the dollar will collapse and we will face massive inflation and a greatly deteriorated economic infrastructure. This will be aggravated by the unfortunate influence of global warming extremism that will wreak havoc on our domestic energy industry and cause the price of all forms of energy to be driven through the roof by regulatory strangulation and misguided views of climate science.
The demographic problems for the Republicans are real. But they can’t be solved by pandering to the most selfish instincts. There is a conservative message of individual responsibility and self-reliance that can resonate with a lot of people including minorities. The liberal solution of make-believe affirmative action programs is not very successful. Colleges can remove standardized testing from its application procedure but that will not remove the education gap that is revealed by such testing. It is only when minorities begin to reach something reasonably close to parity in educational achievement that the arguments of conservatives will resonate with them in significant ways.
Bill Ayers’ Common Core is going to be implemented. Whites will be made dumber.

To the people concerned with immigration:
Did it ever occur to you that European migration of educated, rich/semi-rich or middle class people, who has always been used to -and happy with, welfare states from cradle to grave, with plenty of degrees and phDs titles, is actually worse than poor but honest, hard working latinos who never actually trusted the failed siren songs of free meals in their original countries? (Seriously. Maybe Mexican people are an exception, since they are just on the other side of the border so they are not exactly “migrants that want to integrate”. See V.D.Hanson for better understanding,).
I don’t blame it on the poor immigrants, they might be desperate enough to accept charity without actually selling their souls. I’m more inclined to blame richer childish educated Europeans who enabled the system to begin with, and gave it the aura of righteousness.

The real problem, though, is not Obama and Biden but rather all the people who voted for them, and you can’t make all them go away. This prompts me to ask a rhetorical question or two of my own: Can this fight succeed if we defend just one element (i.e., Western culture or free-market capitalism)?
If we answer this question in the negative, then the first order of business is to form a renewed alliance between fiscal and cultural conservatives. If this cannot be achieved, we will continue to lose at an accelerated pace.
This cultural/economic formula was successful for Reagan and it still offers promise. Understand that “conservative” cannot include defense of the Welfare State, or we lock ourselves into a bidding war as to who can deplete the Federal Treasury fastest.
Can a libertarian, fiscal conservative/social liberal model be substituted as skeet shooter suggests? No. There will be no libertarian successes until the Welfare State is first smashed. Open borders invite proletarian socialists to form an alliance with the Cultural Marxists.
Republicans need more voters. Three options, pick your poison or your poisons.
1. Become more economically populist. (Buchanan, Huckabee)
2. Become more moderate on social issues
3. Acquiese to the wishes of Hispanic voters (and the Chamber of Commerce and the Wall Street Journal editorial page) on immigration issues.
Might be able to exclude one of them, I think need to pick at least two. If Republicans had done #3 in this cycle, you would have won Florida and Nevada, not enough to change the outcome. If you had done some combination of #1 and #2, could have won Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Iowa, maybe even another Midwestern state.

When you inject social conservatism into politics, you end up with a war on drugs (how’s that workin’ out for ya?) and then complain about how many people are in prisons around the nation. You end up with a war on lifestyles that you don’t, personally like or approve of. iow, you shooes how – and where – others will live, talk and dress. You end up with a foreign policy that embraces and promotes the invasion of other nations, for their own good and because it’s the right thing to do, you understand. …then, you wonder why so many other nations hate and fear us and our so-called ‘freedom.’ You then, also, wonder why so-called libertarians, and no few independents, refuse to support or join your party. You alienate half of America and… wonder why you keep losing the big elections and the big policy decisions.
Fiscal cons are just as bad, in their own way. They seek ways to balance the budget…but seldom discuss the details…or even discuss where to slash the budget to sustainable levels. When you start slashing the budget, many, if not most of your favorite government programs go the way of the dinosaur, including the 501(c)3 status for your local churches. You don’t discuss that. You want to take it all out of the other guy’s pocketbook while maintaining government cash flow for your own projects and liberty-reducing, big government policies.
You want individual freedom and liberty? A return to The Constitution? Smaller government? Then embrace The Constitution. Fully, in all of its aspects, and not just the parts that you like. They said what they meant and meant what they said…or else it’s just another god-damned piece of paper.
Freedom and liberty were never meant to be squandered Warren. When anything is allowed in the name of freedom, you get what we have now. The war on drugs needs to be more vigorously persecuted. We don’t WANT drugs in our society. They tend only toward moral evil. Likewise with homosexuality. Likewise with aborticide which stems from fornication. Yes to the Constitution. No to using it as a framework to allow evil.
That’s your problem with winning the big elections and the big policy issues. You, like your opponents, want to define what is evil. They often do a better job selling that particular message, which is why you keep losing on the big issues.
If, however, the behavior of others doesn’t pick your pocket or break your leg (see Thomas Jefferson), it is no harm to you or to anyone else. remember: Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If a church-affiliated hospital treats someone on Medicaid or Medicare (mandated to be the first payer) then they do accept federal dollars, yes. We have three choices ahead of us beginning with the most likely but least effective and ending with the least likely but permanent fix to our loss. Unfortunately, I fear we’ll choose number one.
1. Business as usual. The coalition of the South and the Republican Party served us well these past 45 years, or so. But times change and this strategy has left the Republicans open to its innate inconsistencies and a muddled vision.
2. Become the party of true freedom.
A. Drop the antiabortion-at-any-stage platform. It leaves us wide open–and rightfully so–to accusations of social engineering. Anytime a liberal goes to justify his overreach into our lives, he can always say that, “well, the conservatives want to end abortion at any time regardless of what the mother wants. That sounds like control to me.” And they’d be right.
That is not to say that conservatives have to accept abortion at any time, just to go with moderation. Allow abortion for the first two to three months of pregnancy. But make it illegal thereafter. Americans are not willing to accept the religious views of the minority that all life begins at conception. And I agree. It breaks the covenant of church-state separation. But after that, what a powerful message we could send to the electorate:
“Look, people (holding up a picture of a fetus at three months sucking its thumb), instinctively we know that you do not feed cows their own bones and you don’t allow the aborting of this. How do we know this? Because it gives us the creeps. Plain and simple. The left is so wedded to their extreme ideology, they don’t even have the compassion to protect an unborn child at this advanced stage of development. Most of us even feel a pang of remorse when an animal dies with its unborn offspring. My God, if we can’t agree to this, heaven help us.”
With that, we could literally crucify the left.
B. Decriminalize pot. I know I’ll catch a lot of flack for this, but that stance alone will gain us a huge number of supporters. Even if they don’t agree with us and if it never becomes law, it will clearly define us as the party of free choice and self-responsibility. It is a statement that the government does not have the right to make personal choices for us.
True consistency would entail the abolishment of the vice department all together: prostitution, drugs, gambling. Its not to advocate any of these things, its just that government does NOT have the right to coerce us to do things we wouldn’t even let our own mothers tell us what to do. But I know going this far right now is probably too much to ask for. So, for now anyways–and as a statement, if nothing else–advocate the legalization of pot. Even the majority of conservative justices on the supreme court “get it” and–in the Raich case–have already endorsed it. Once again, they don’t advocate it; they just don’t believe it is the right of the government to make that decision.
So we abide by the constitution, maintain the division of church and state and maximize personal liberty. From here on out, we are able to truthfully and with consistency portray the opposition as “control freaks” and the party of the staid establishment. For the younger people, we turn things on their head and show the Democrats to be “their parent’s party.”
(As an aside, I–like probably most of us–recoiled at the Republican Party being characterized as the “Red” party. The Red party should be the revolutionaries. Then I started rethinking this. Today the conservatives are the revolutionaries. Fate has dealt us a new, more dynamic and excitingly hip new narrative–unwittingly by the left-wing media’s decision to camouflage liberals by renaming them “progressives” and doing away with the politically in-expeditious red moniker. This is our chance to bring in a new generation of young people, who–like all young people–want nothing more than to exercise their newly gained right to make decisions on their own.)
By doing these things, we will probably not lose the Southern vote. Too many of their values coincide with Republican values. It will probably make them far less enthusiastic to vote Republican–and, inso doing–we will lose some votes there. However, how many people are out there who say, “I want the government out of my pocket and out of the bedroom.” Studies say this best fits the great majority’s views. This should be our motto. It is consistent, clearly paints the left as the party of control, brings together the most people under the largest tent, and gives the Republican Party a more sound future with a far larger portion of the younger generation.
3. Amicably divide the country: the true permanent solution to our problem. This doesn’t have to be through violence in any way. The Soviet Union broke up peaceably, Czechoslovakia did so by vote alone as have many other independence movements proceeded in Europe over the past few decades.
Why do something so extreme? Its simple. We do NOT have control of the media or the schools. Nor do we have any chance whatsoever of bringing any kind of balance back. You can’t go anywhere on television or movie theaters anymore without a constant and insidious subtext–overt or otherwise–that paints the following: men, white people in general, and business are inherently evil and that if you don’t buy the ecology line in all its hyperbolic hysteria you are an earth-hating psychopath.
The propaganda generated by this monolith is un-defeatable. Forget about wringing our hands about the unfairness of it all. We as conservatives see things as they are and not how they should be. Why do we delude ourselves on this one point? Maybe our love of country makes us blind to it. But this love is for a country that no longer exists. One founded on the principles of The Enlightenment, logic, reason, and an unwavering optimism in man and his capacity to rule himself.
Over time and after countless arguments with liberal friends and acquaintances I have come to the following conclusion: Liberals do not think like conservatives. Maybe it has to do with upbringing, but I doubt it. I think the reason is innate. At one point some people developed the capacity for objectivity. It proved successful and allowed enough very smart people to bring about The Enlightenment in Europe. Those who really understood it came to America and made it flourish. Up until now, we have been blessed with this advantage that brought us greatness in the past.
But now, with immigration of those who have no background in The Enlightenment–quite possibly because, in their societies, those with the capacity to understand it never became sufficient in number to break with the past–and the ceaseless propaganda of a media that has no more mental sophistication than those yelling, “Burn witch! Burn!” 300 years ago, we are at last to succumb to the rabble that ruled us so long ago. They have neither the appreciation for nor the capacity to “get it.”
The Enlightenment and its natural offspring, democracy, only work when enough of those capable of understanding outnumber those who don’t. That is clearly no longer the case. The demographics confirm it. We are on our way out. But the left has, unwittingly, given us a unique opportunity to get rid of the deadwood and troglodytes that now rule and move to a new world without these encumbrances. And how do we do it? In a way, we agree with them. If white people–and conservatives, in particular–are so fundamentally flawed: we are racist, warlike, money-grubbing devils that should be quarantined from the rest of civilization, then obviously we hold down minorities and keep them from realizing their full potential. How could they possibly want us around? We free ourselves by freeing them from us. We “quarantine” ourselves in the SE where social conservatives can live according to how they see fit, and in the NW where libertarian conservatives can be free to pursue their own happiness.
We are the most itinerate society in the world. Let’s take that to its natural conclusion and agree to divide the country along idealogical lines. Minorities who understand would, of course, be more than welcome to create a new country with conservatives. Fact is, the productive ones who believe what their parents were once taught that hard work and strong values are primary in creating success could be nothing other than an asset. But the world they will be entering will be truely color-blind.
Why fight the inevitable downfall of America? It has served its purpose and, like George Washington, maybe its greatest gift will be stepping down to allow new, better things to sprout from its fertile ground. Our founding fathers gave us the gift of reason, objectivity, The Enlightenment, and a belief in the individual’s God-given rights. We’ve had over two hundred years to sort out those people who are probably genetically predisposed to “get it.” The others in all likelihood never will really understand what sets us apart.
This is our great opportunity. Let’s use it to get out, drop the deadwood and start fresh. And even if it never comes to pass, I also know that the very threat of dividing the county will most likely end in concessions to hold it together. Though it is hard to write a list of the minimal requirements that would have any chance of being agreed to. And others, like demanding that Hollywood stop writing anti-American, anti-western civilization, anti-male scripts, go against my own cherished belief in freedom of speech. This is where things plainly become irreconcilable.
Do we really want to futilely continuing to hope that one day they will all come to their senses when they simply can’t while the world collapses around us? Its time we stop complaining and do what conservatives do. We don’t whine; we solve problems and then get on with it.
With Europe no longer capable of championing it and America’s inexorable new future, dividing this country is–with all its advancements in thought and humanism–western civilization’s last chance.

You want enthusiasm? Line up co-sponsors for the Liberty Amendment. Float bills to put a moratorium on guest-work visas. Float bills to mandate construction of those other 8,000 miles of border fence and deploy the regular army along them. At least write them and put them in the hopper even if you know they’re going to be tabled, FCOL! Float bills to cut funding of CPB, NPR, national endowments for arts and humanities… Really. I woke up depressed this morning, not because Obama won, but rather that America died. This is the country that the majority of people want and they shall have it. Will they learn as it continues to rot? Doubtful, with a Republican majority in the House that will undoubtedly attempt to obstruct further decay, the Democrats will see them as the problem when, in fact, there is nothing to be done. The seeds of destruction have already been sewn and we’re done.
I have many ideas of how to resuscitate it but I am 70 and don’t have the time or energy to fight anymore. Actually, we should have been fighting for our country long ago. We should have stopped teachers from preaching their ideology. We should have put an end to all of those social engineering programs for children that only develop a sense of servility. Now, all these young adults want is someone to to take responsibility for them, make decisions for them, insure their comfort and success.

In my opinion, Romney’s failure to achieve the numbers achieved by McCain-Palin suggests another factor that all the enlightened libertarians and conservatives, like commentor 107, might want to consider. Conservative Christians may not have turned out for Morman Romney.

A few additional factors that tilted the election to Obama:

The battle for the direction of this country is being won by the socialist, anti-God, America-bad segment of the Democrat party because they took control of our schools, colleges and universities forty years ago. They also control the media which continues the drumbeat of indoctrination of our youth 24 hours a day. We are trying to fight a battle of ideas and policies using facts. We have no hope of winning when we are trying to convince a brain-washed population with an ever shortening attention span of very limited capacity.
The only hope for a limited Constitutional government to ever exist again in the United States is for the people to take back local control of our schools.
Sadly, I no longer think that is possible. We have let it slide too far for too long.
Why did Obama win, all the above….. If you are looking for a return to the values that built this nation, its not going to be an easy accomplishment. America has been tricked into being left of center and the powers in place will be hard to change in the future. Their indoctrination starts in grade school, is viewed on all channels, and is now going to be part of our economics. The question is, what do you do about it? I don’t think we can ever take back the MSM, get professors and teachers who won’t politic, or undo the social welfare programs. What is left to us? What is left to us is economic warfare. Use you dollars to build the nation you want. Here is how it is done. First don’t donate to any fund that will help with the recovery of the Northeast. Since they wanted Obama so badly, let him be the one who supplies all the capitol to repair the damage. We’ll see how fast he moves to help the poor white people of the Northeast. Avoid doing any business in any of the blue States. Don’t vacation there, don’t buy anything produced there (unless it is entirely avoidable). Buy only Ford or foreign autos. Avoid doing business with companies such as Time Warner, don’t use any cable or other products from them. Check to see where any of the cable networks is headquartered. Divest of any stock in CBS, NBC, or Disney. In short, use the same tactics these left leaners use only against them. Coke not Pepsi. There is a huge list folks, its just waiting to be discovered. Money talks, it talks louder than words. The chant isn’t just made in the USA, but where its made in the USA.
Here is some irony about this election. Obama won’t have been elected if it hadn’t been for the help of big labor. Yet, 2/3s of the jobs created here in this country are held by foreigners. Labor couldn’t even see that their worst enemy was the very man they were supporting. We no longer have to outsource our jobs, the labor we so desperately sought has come here and we are still stuck with 7.9% unemployment.

My daughter did read the whole thing, yes the whole thing. Did you? Universal health care is being brought to you at the expense of my health care which I worked and paid for my whole adult life. Its being brought to you by the 780 billion taken out of Medicare. What did I get for it? If I get sick and have to go to a hospital, they take me the first time. Should I get sick again within 30 days, they get fined if they take me. (By the way this happened to me when I had a kidney stone removed and later got a case of MERSA afterward. Under this new law I’d be dead.) I’m no longer entitled to physical therapy to sustain me. As far as I know nobody in this country was denied health care. People I know who are on welfare got adequate health services via Medicaid. Our hospitals are not allowed to turn anyone away, all you had to do was look in the emergency rooms. New ideas don’t mean new truths. The mores that anchor our society will still anchor it. Surrendering to our baser wants don’t make them right no matter how enlightened you feel. See, I don’t have to quote anyone, I can think for myself.
Of course I did not read the whole thing, but I do know that it does not affect my health care coverage. I agree that ideas should be accepted or rejected on their merits, and am addressing the folks who say, “where does it say in the Constitution that…?” You say that Americans have been “tricked,” whereas what I see is that have taken a position different from yours. Romney’s failure to achieve the numbers achieved by McCain-Palin suggests another factor that all the enlightened libertarians and conservatives, like commentor 107, might want to consider. Conservative Christians may not have turned out for Morman Romney.
Romney (according to Drudge at the moment) 57,304,430; McCain 57,934,814. Given that McCain was lackluster by comparison to Romney and given the crawl through broken glass narrative, who stayed home?
Can conservatives/libertarians/Republicans win without them? I think not. Can a political narrative be constructed that includes them and avoids the Akin-type fiasco? I think so, provided the intellectual pomposity of conservative and libertarian “intellectuals” can be put aside.

Obama won as Lenin: he promised every needy person something from the government, and he lied that his opponent will take away the little they have. Of course, all this have nothing to do with truth. Can one win against such propaganda machine while staying in the framework of civilized society? I do not think somebody invented a solution yet.

The knives were out before the election results were known here in the San Fransico Bay Area. A young woman from Larouchepac.org had a large display in front of my local post office yesterday morning calling on Americans to Impeach Obama. Posters showed Obama with a Hitler mustache and flyers articulated his crimes against the US constitution. According to the young woman I talked to, the movement is attracting many disillusioned and radicalized young people who feel abandoned in our current political system by the left and the right. The Larouchepac platform is anti-war and critical of the banking system, so Larouche may be drawing cross-over support from Paul fans in the bay area. Anyway, there is small satisfaction in knowing Obama will have opposition from all directions, even from the heart of dark blue SF and that there are young radicals unafraid to call for his impeachment in public.
I am so tired of even conservatives saying things like this: “Richard Murdock’s outrageous views on rape as something God intended”. Murdock, despite the twisting of the liberal media, was talking about LIFE being something God intended.
These contextually-impaired readers need to recognise their idiocy: “I came to realize LIFE is that gift from God. Even when LIFE begins, in that horrible situation of rape, it is something that God intended to happen.”
Only in the liberal mindset, where life in pregnancy is considered a curse, does this twist into something “bad”. Murdock was looking at LIFE as a Godly blessing, something good to come out of a horrible act.
That Conservatives fell for the Liberal spin is discouraging and disheartening.

CAMPAIGN IN ALL 50 STATES And finally taking a page from the Warren Buffett playbook, buy up every available media outlet so it can present your message on a daily basis.

I can not understand the pernicious levels of defeatist commentary I am reading in this thread. If conservatism lost on Tuesday November 6, 2012, then it was because it came to the polls prepared to lose and whine about it.
What happened to the message of manning up and taking fiscal responsibility for our nation? What happened to standing up to fight for what conservatives belive?
This is not the time to cry like little girls who have been told we’re not the most popular person at the prom. Get over it. Make a gameplan to win the 2014 seats to prevent even further damage at the state and congressional levels. Stop being a bunch of quitters who fall apart at the first setback they encounter.
The USA still exists. It is facing serious problems. Behaving like a bunch of Chicken Little’s crying “the sky is falling” is not going to create any solutions. It may be comfortaing to weep at a repudiation by 50% of the electorate, but I prefer to look at it as 48% understanding the importance of conservative values. Certainly it seems like a tipping point, but laying down without pushing back is only going to create a self fullfilling prophesy.
The solution is to stop looking for a political elections and “government” to solve this problem. Live your conservative values in your personal life, and become the example people want to follow instead of trying to foist off the responsibility onto an elected official. Going “Galt” is only surrendering to the “they’re right after all” mentality.
Just because others throw away their morality doesn’t mean it is time to surrender and join them, it means it is time to fight even harder. If holders of conservative values have to become martyrs to political correctness and socialism, then let them dance around with your metaphorical blood on their hands while you stood true to your beliefs. That was the most important lesson Jesus Christ dying on the cross presented, and people still flinch away from suffering now to make a better future for others tomorrow.
It is very hard to tell people they need to feel the pain when you are among the first to avoid it. Step up and take the hit now knowing that only by letting the left leaning forces in this country reap the whirlwind of their victory can they ever learn the mistake they are making.

Republicans have finally paid a political price for their cynical, treasonous, scorched-earth strategy to oppose any and all attempts by Obama and the Democrats to get this country back on track. They held the economy of the country hostage so that they could create a failed presidency to run against. They created this unprecedented gridlock and then – and I’m not making this up – claimed that only a Republican – Rawmoney – would be able to work with them to break this gridlock.
Rawmoney wanted us to believe that the unprecedented obstructionism of Obama’s agenda by the Republicans for the express purpose of creating a failed presidency was Obama’s fault and that we needed to not only ignore the treasonous betrayal of America’s interests for the pursuit of political power by the Republicans, but to reward this extortion by voting for him.
And, now House Republicans are signaling that they’ll continue to oppose higher taxes on the richest Americans as part of a budget compromise to avoid the “fiscal cliff”. How much longer now will the Republicans continue to put their selfish desire for power over the good of the country?
