Nothing is more reactionary in America today than identity politics, and there is no better example of this than the NAACP. The organization was of great importance in its day, but there is a strong argument to be made it should no longer exist.
Do I have a right to say such a thing? Well, I was a civil rights worker in the South in the sixties, lost the full use of my finger there, went on to be a significant financial supporter of the Black Panther breakfast program in the seventies…. Is that enough?
Maybe, maybe not, but whatever you think of me, the NAACP has become a creator, not a fighter, of racism. They are in the racism business, fanning the flames in order to survive, and I won’t be reading their shameful, phony propagandistic report on the supposed bigotry in the Tea Party movement just being issued today in time for the election. Life is too short. If it were centuries long, it would be too short.
But am I attacking this report without reading it? Indeed I am. If Nancy Pelosi can shove through Congress sweeping health care legislation that changes the economy of our country without reading it, I certainly can attack some trivial report on my little Internet blog after only glancing at the first paragraph and the names of the authors.
There is, however, a serious issue represented by this report. We have come to a moment in our national development when identity based organizations like the NAACP have a strong vested interest in impeding progress, especially for the groups they purport to represent. If things get better for black people, the NAACP has no reason for being — or must devolve into some kind of social club.
Linking this to your Merkel post, the problem is not race. It’s culture. Confounding the two allows organizations like the NAACP to claim victories they don’t deserve and avoid real accountability for the roots of the problems that drive their fund raising.

Sadly, you underestimate the depth of the rot, Roger. In fact, the Tea Party is a threat to most Blacks. The NAACP like Obama and a majority of African Americans have given up on the possibility of thriving in a merit based society. Capitalism, they have concluded, is not a viable environment for African American economic success.
I don’t know what percentage of African American’s are on the government payroll in one form or another but I’m certain it is a far higher percentage than whites. That socialism and socialist entitlements are the only hope for African Americans isn’t openly stated but it is the operative conclusion for most blacks and their liberal supporters.
Tragically, though they would surely swear it ain’t so, African Americans have succumbed to the myth of their basic inferiority.

I don’t know which of Bush’s speechwriters came up with that formulation–the soft bigotry of low expectations–but he or she was dead on. As with his insistence on metrics, Bush had many things very right.
Perhaps the NAACP would demonstrate greater self-respect if it was legitimately founded and funded by African Americans rather than well-meaning Jews.
Daniel Moynihan’s prescription for benign neglect sounded terribly cruel years ago but his wisdom becomes more evident every day. Giving a black man a leg up is a righteous thing to do. Providing him a permanent crutch lames him forever.
With an uneducated, unemployed underclass, both Obama and groups like NAACP are casting about franticallly for a way of getting these tens of thousands back on their feet and in some kind of employment. If that means they are given jobs in ACORN or the New Black Panthers, so be it. At least it’s a form of employment to replace the jobs that went away when Detroit and the car industry collapsed.
It would also be interesting to know how many of which races make up the various federal bureaucracies. Just eye-balling it, my guess is that at least 80% of post office employees in Los Angeles are black, and I know any time I have to call DC for *any*thing I’m routed through a black employee. Which is another reason why it will be really really really hard to make any cuts in government services because all of those people who lose their jobs working for Uncle Sam will then become unemployable for life.
Which means that cuts there are to be made in Federal personnel spending will best be done with hiring freezes, job loss by attrition, pension reductions, and salary freezes, not in outright layoffs.
Wrong, wrong, wrong–that is the soft bigotry in action. Cut now, cut deep and rebuild the economy from the (private) ground up.
When I look at the NAACP, I see the March of Dimes. Sort of, anyway.
You see, the March of Dimes was first organized to fund research into polio. Polio used to be a greatly feared affliction, especially of children. Parents would routinely keep their children indoors for weeks at a time upon hearing a rumor that someone in their county or state had come down with polio. But with time, funding, and the brilliance of Jonas Salk, polio was eventually wiped out…and the March of Dimes found that its reason for existence had vanished along with it.
But hark! There are other afflictions in the world, said the March of Dimes executives to one another. And we’ve proved that we’re really good at raising funding for research into them. So let’s just pick another and keep going! Only this time, let’s pick something a little more challenging than polio…
They picked “birth defects.” It was an inspired choice: everyone feels bad about a baby born with a handicap, but no two handicaps are the same, and the probability that any two birth defects have the same genesis is very small. So the March of Dimes stayed in business, those executives stayed in their offices and kept drawing their salaries, and on we all went.
White racism against Negroes as a significant social pathology dwindled approximately to nothing in the late 60s, while I was still in high school. The great civil rights leaders of the 50s and 60s, most especially Medgar Evers and Martin Luther King, had completed the awakening of the American conscience to the cruelty of racial discrimination. But “racism” as a bludgeon with which to squeeze money and political concessions from a white-dominated government remained potent…and is still potent today, owing to the undeserved guilt of American whites. That constitutes a sociopolitical niche in which a certain kind of lowlife can flourish…and as usually happens given time enough, the lowlifes suited to that niche found it and made themselves very comfortable there.

Morgan Freeman has suggested, in complete seriousness, that we cease to talk about race – that simply expelling it from our discourse is the most constructive thing we can do. He could well be right…but don’t expect the race-hustlers listed above to follow his advice. Can’t agree with you there. Heard of folic acid? Every woman of childbearing age has-it reduces spinal defects by something like 90%. So practically every food on the grocery store shelf has it now, as do all vitamins. It costs pennies for a YEAR’s supply for a woman. And you can thank the March of Dimes for finding out how important it is. They are also doing lots of research on prematurity. We have very high rates of it here. It would be nice to know why. I had 2 preemies in the NICU a month, and it cost over half a million, and they weren’t particularly sick for preemies. Finding out what’s causing so many babies to come early will save billions a year. That’s worth it, I’d say, how about you?
mom0f4, I think you’re absolutely right that the March of Dimes _has_ done something very positive in funding the research that led to the discovery of the benefits of folic acid. I doubt that Mr. Porretto would disagree with you. As I read his remarks, he is just pointing out that, once polio was conquered, which was the original goal of the March of Dimes, they should have closed up shop, just as the NAACP should close up shop since their original goals of conquering overt and systemic racism have been achieved. Instead, just as the March of Dimes found something else to justify their continued existence, the NAACP seems to have found its own new purpose. In Mr. Porretto’s view – and that of the author of the article on this page – that new goal is to find any feeble excuse possible for continuing to see rampant racism even when many believe that it has been extinguished.
To compare the NAACP to the March of Dimes is incorrect. It would only be correct if after the defeat of polio the MoD went to the labs and invented a new strain of polio to infect the population as a means to maintain their jobs.
The NAACP has not moved on to a new challenge but, rather, stokes the old fires refusing to accept success and move on.

‘Outlawed’, nominally. Legal enforcement of that outlawing is limited to actions against the ‘white power holders’ by the Holder ‘Justice’ Department. Oh, my dear little naive Mr. Simon. Your conclusion of the NAACP is about 40 years too late. Those of us who live in large cities, mine with a majority black population, have known about the NAACP’s true character for DECADES. By the late 1960′s the civil rights movement learned that it was far more profitable, both politically and financially, to shake down white people and fan black self-pity than to create a better, brighter future for black children. And they have been getting away with it with the full support of the white socialists, all at the cost of hundreds of thousands of dead black people.

To suggest that Hallmark intentionally did such a thing brings new meaning to the word moron and the group of a half dozen or so who held the press conference had no light of reason behind their eyes.

Second, “advancement” is no longer descriptive of this association. In fact, it desperately needs to keep African Americans locked into a permanent underclass …or more appropriately, a permanent “aggrieved class”, in order to keep the pea hidden under the moving shell.
Because if African Americans (or any other member of the “permanent aggrieved” class ever woke up to the fact that joining hands with the small government, free market enterprise crowd was their ticket to ride, the Democrats would be left to the fringe Green Party and Socialist Anarchists they truly want to be.

In the 1970′s the Texas Offshore Oil Terminal Commission finished it’s job and shut itself down. Headed by retired General Cross (LBJ’s Air Force One pilot) and Chairmaned by Joe Albrighton of banking fame, with George Brown and other business people on the Commission, the Commission quickly & completely did it’s job and then took itself out of existance.
One of the fun aspects of “de-commissioning” included the response from the Texas Secretary of State’s Office, when the Commission’s administrative assistant asked how to return the un-used money to the State. The response was along the lines of “I do not know. We have never had this happen before.”
A personal feeling from this commentor: “May this ‘de-commissioning’ happen many times more and nationally”.

I can think of a far more dramatic example of an organization that put itself out of business: the Soviet Union! The Soviet Union was not conquered militarily from outside, nor was it overthrown by force from within the country. Basically, it seems to have finally realized its own moral, social, and economic bankruptcy and voluntarily (although not with a variety of internal and external pressures!!) dismantled itself. This remains one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever seen, although, strangely enough, it is one of the least discussed politicial miracles in history. I personally suspect that this is because the vast majority of the West’s self-styled intellectuals continue to mourn the loss of the Soviet Union, which they, at least inwardly, held to be the Great Hope of Mankind….

I’ve made similar comments about every form of social work, their goal should be to eliminate the need for their job. What really gets me is how they claim to be helping more and more people thinking this shows how wonderful they are, when in fact it shows how little they are actually accomplishing.
The social workers – or their spokespeople – will inevitably explain than the increased need for social workers is due to the oppression of the underclass by the vicious capitalists, or words to that effect. People with a leftist orientation will be perfectly satisfied with that.
It’s time for all ‘special legislation’ to be abandoned. It has been used as a club for flogging all dissimilar racial groups for long enough. It is now being used to ABUSE all dissimilar racial groups, and it’s effect is reversing the progress made, even if the progress has been minimal.
If not abandoned, this ‘legislation’ shall create more isolation and ill feelings of all races for all others, and that beckons violence.

The NAACP is a classic example of an organization falling victim to Pournelle’s Iron Law. (“In every bureaucratic organization there are two kinds of people: those working for the ends of the organization and those working for the advancement of the organization itself. Given time, inevitably, the latter kind will gain control of the organization and dictate the rules under which it functions.”)
The March of Dimes has some issues (e.g., something like two-thirds of its income goes to overhead, according to publ;icly available reports), but it would be unfair to compare it to the NAACP. The MoD successfully reinvented itself to address other real problems.

As a proud Canadian, I take exception to the claim that yours is the only country to have solved racism as a large scale problem. As a case in point, about 20 years ago, I worked with a black man who had come from Gary, Indiana. He met and married a Canadian woman, who was also black but of Caribbean origins, and soon emigrated to Canada and started a family. I remember him telling me that, while he could have continued living in the US since he was used to how things worked there, he would not have inflicted that on his wife or child since they had never been exposed to it.
Sounds like you might actually be afraid of the truth. Propaganda is not propaganda if it’s backed by facts, and this report is backed by facts. The reaction of the NAACP to the Tea Party kind of makes me think of the French unions striking because the government there says they need to work until they are 62. They are not thinking about France, they are thinking about their own power base. The same is true with the NAACP…they are thinking about themselves, not the community they claim to represent. As a parent of a bi-racial son who is marrying a woman from Polynesian and the parent of another son who is marrying a Jewish woman whose grand parents emigrated to Puerto Rico from Spain, and the parent of a son married to a black woman with two of the most adorable grandchildren ever from that set of parents, I refuse to read the NAACP report and refuse to listen to anyone who lectures me about being a racist because I am conservative. I find it so interesting that people make all kinds of assumptions about me as an older evangelical Christian woman and just assume that of course I am racist….when their family is either all white or all black.
The main reason I WILL be reading the report is because I want to finally see the PROOF these people have that the Tea Party is a group of bigots and racists. After reading this,I will contact my local chapter and ask them why they have not contacted Breitbart concerning the 100 g’s he is offering anyone who can provide documented proof of racism.
Gee, maybe they haven’t taken Breitbart up on it because:
1) Their report doesn’t have any substantive proof (I haven’t read it, but I do know many Tea Partiers, and know that they’re not racist).
2) Breitbart’s challenge isn’t just for proof of racism, it’s for proof that the “N-word” was hurled at Congressional Black Caucus members during a specific anti-ObamaCare rally… a very specific incident.
In short, you’re very short on facts and long on fake talking points.
Roger, you’re a screenwriter so I leave it to you to flesh out my thoughts. How about this plot, or as you say, pitch?
Title: “Gates in China: (riffing on Sellars’ “Nixon in China”)
First Act.
Scenario: Imagine Henry Louis Gates arrival in Peking (note the spelling, like Florence not Firenze). After many a mishap – non-deference by airport personnel, taxi drivers, hotel staff positively rude, people in streets staring, pointing, laughing, etc.) a growing awareness begins to dawn.
Alone in his hotel room, 3am. The awareness, to his horror – how lucky he is to be an American.
The tragedy of having to accept his life work as fraudulent. Pathos. His mind reeling (how do you show a mind reeling?) and denial, the first stage in cancer recovery.
Second Act:
Scenario: His immediate return to Victim Culture Pashadom at Hahvahd. Dramatic confrontation with the Oppressor White Male in the form of the Pigs. Denial and the conflict with his Peking epiphany produces enormous pressure and doubling down that explodes into epic battle scene.
White House: His good friend The Prez immediately recognizes that this moment is critical; knowing full well the realities of life outside the USA for blacks; his rush to aid his fallen comrade and bolster his lagging self-esteem. White House beerfest follows, teachable moment, etc.
Third Act:
Gates later, 3am, Harvard Square townhouse. He writes a curious book against reparations for slavery, says blacks enslaved other blacks. Catharsis. The beginning of recovery from Oikophobia.

The NAACP was always a racist organization. It’s mission is racist.
They dont oppose racism, they merely support another skin color. They are the flip side of the KKK coin.
