Obama: Back to School

June 7, 2010 - 10:09 pm - by Roger L Simon

I almost felt bad for the president when I saw the grades from this ongoing CBS poll on Obama’s first year in office. They’re catastrophic.  He  didn’t even do as well as Rodney Dangerfield when he went back to school – and Obama’s certainly not as funny.

Of course, we all know this is only an “Internet poll,” but one wonders  how long CBS will keep it up. Who’s going to give the guy good marks at this point?   George Soros? Dunno.

The real suprise is Obama’s approval rating. Who are the 46% of likely voters who approve of ihs performance (per Rasmussen)? About half of that number can be explained by college professors, knee-jerk leftist urbanites, union hacks, and other captive constituencies. But the other half? Does that mean the Democrats get 46% of the vote no matter what they do? Are Democratic voters’ expectations really that low?

    • Roger L Simon

Here’s the full Rasmussen for today. Not such a rosy picture:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows that 25% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-two percent (42%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -17 (see trends).
Consumer and investor confidence has fallen significantly following the release of Friday’s disappointing report on job creation. Just 27% now believe the economy is getting better, down from 34% before the report. Republicans overwhelmingly believe the economy is getting worse. Unaffiliated voters, by a 49% to 21% margin, agree. Democrats are more optimistic. Forty-one percent (41%) of those in the president’s party believe the economy is getting better while 33% say it’s getting worse.

  2. aclay 1, I totally agree with your comment. What is up with that 46%? That’s scary. No matter what happens, they’re going for Obama.

I remember (leading up to the election) when Howard Stern sent his people out to ask questions of those voting for Obama. And the questions would be the opposite of what Obama supported, and actually what his opponent supported. All those that were interviewed stood with Obama, when actually it was the exact opposite of what he stood for.

    • Mike, I agree with your opinion that 46% support in spite of anything is scary. However, I had an exchange with George Skelton yesterday that may shed a bit of light. He had written a column about how today’s Republican party would reject Reagan as too moderate. That, of course, is nonsense but par for Skelton. We exchanged e-mails, including his offer to send me a map to leave California, and I finally sent him a link to Mickey Kaus’ Manifesto of his positions for a Democrat not attached at the hip to public employee unions. Skelton’s response ?

      “Scary”

Obama’s grades aren’t nearly as bad as first appears. Recall that these are merely pre-inflation scores. After race-norming and grade inflation the president gets straight As.

Where’s ACORN and the undead of Chicago and Detroit? Surely there’s internet access 6 feet under?

The poll linked to was dated January 20, 2010 – almost six months ago. Things have gotten much worse since then. Rasmussen’s daily tracking poll shows both “President” O’Bumble and the Dummycritter party in serious trouble. Unfortunately, the Repuglycons aren’t doing much better. I think it’s time for a serious challenge from a third party – call it the American Independence Party – made up of Independents and conservative Republicans and Democrats. Suck the life out of the other two parties. Begin at the lowest level and work up, showing a new party CAN work.

In the meantime, vote the worst of this bad lot out of office this November.

    • David Thomson

Your advice is awful. Conservative third parties normally only help get Democrats elected. Furthermore, Gallup shows the GOP with a six point national lead over the Democrats. That is fantastic news. This should mean that Republican candidates should win most races in the purple and red state areas.

I think it’s interesting that Obama’s best grades were in the areas where he’s doing things pretty much as George W. Bush would have. (Iraq and Afghanistan).

  8. 8. L. Thomas Harlan

It is clear at this point that Mr. Obama is suffering from some form of personality disorder.

I am uncertain of the clinical diagnosis but many, including the NY Times columnists Dowd and Rich, have commented recently in oblique terms in regard to emotional disturbance and the Commander-in-Chief.

In my opinion, a major MSM outlet will soon broach this issue head on. It is simply too apparent and too good a story as well.

Expect to see reference to the DSM-6 and our President in the same sentence soon.

What happens when a narcissist who’s had everything going for him his whole adult life suddenly has everything going against him? First there’ll be denial (occurring now). Then there’ll be the blame (we haven’t seen even the least of it yet). It’ll be trully be sickening to behold, is my guess, given the platform and media access he’s got. Ultimately, he’ll sicken his own supporters.

However, eventually he will understand that his presidency has failed miserably. What does a narcissist do then? My guess is exit stage-left and start writing memoirs.

      • David Thomson

I do not expect Barack Obama to finished out his term. The job is way too much for him. This is a man who probably should not be anything more than an ordinary Illinois state senator. It would not surprise me if Obama resigns before January. He will do so for “health reasons”.

Obama still doesn’t realize the predicament he’s in over the oil spill. All the words in the world aren’t going to wipe up the oil or clean up the shores and marshes. When Obama asserts that he’s been on top of the spill since day one and that all resources have been brought to bear, he recalls to mind ‘Baghdad Bob’, that Iraqi PR nutjob who day after day was declaring victory over the U.S. Army against the backdrop of American tanks and soldiers smoking and joking across the street. Baghdad Bob, at least, was good for some laughs. Obama’s BS that he’s been on top of the spill from the beginning would be a hoot if it weren’t for countless images of oil-soaked penguins and sea turtles caught in the muck, to say nothing of the myriad of other calamities that will undoubtedly result from the catastrophe.

And now there’s supposed to be three oil leaks actually, not one. Jindal’s going hoarse asking for permission to build booms. Oil experts (though apparently none from BP) are wondering why tankers aren’t going to the site and vacuuming up the oil. And now other experts are warning of unimaginable oil sprays on a massive scale when the hurricane season gets going…akin to gigantic cans of spray paint having at it all along the coastline and parts inland.

    “You got me”.

This utterance of unmitigated arrogance is shapeshifting before our very eyes.

Once a pearl cast before the swine, it intended to convey the safety ans security of “Fort Savior”, a fortress so impenetrable it could hermetically seal even the most shady Democrat and its siren winds beckoned the Specter of Benedict Arnold inspired republicans to scale its walls and mewl for a place within.

In one short year, Fort Savior has morphed into Fort Crevier. The very definition of dead weight tonnage.

DWT, you see, will bear witness to Harry Reid trying to explain his lofty and exalted perch in Fort Savior to the folks of Nevada who have been shell shocked by an interventionist government hell bent on pillaging and plundering from its own citizens.

DWT has Blanche Lincoln circling the wagons in Arkansas and getting hit by her own crossfire.

And as Democrat after Democrat after Democrat gets picked off in the upcoming battles for the nation’s soul, they will exclaim out loud: “DWT, you got me”.

Obama’s inaction, dithering, call it what you will, serves him well in this oil mess. As far as he’s concerned, he’s in no predicament at all. Sure, there’s some luke-warm heat over his playing golf, going on vacation, or sitting on his ass while the oil keeps gushing — so what? Let ‘em squawk all they want. Obama looks at the big picture and figures the longer the oil gushes the better. How’s that? Economic and ecological disasters, one after another coming down on America — what could be bad?
