Fiorina “Boxing Out” Boxer

August 17, 2009 - 11:22 am - by Roger L Simon

As a long time NBA fan, I am painfully aware of the importance of “boxing out.” And one person who should have been boxed out years ago is my home state Senator Barbara Boxer. Of course if there were even sensible term limits (twelve years in the Senate, por ejemplo), she’d be gone by now. Too bad. She may personally be the rudest person in Congress – and one of the dopiest. Her recent assault on a general for calling her “Ma’am” instead of “Senator” was a real eye roller. And now, apparently, she has a serious opponent in the offing: What looks increasingly likely is that Boxer will be in for the re-election fight of her career. While she has yet to announce her candidacy, all signs point to a run by Republican Carly Fiorina, the charismatic ex-chief of Hewlett-Packard who was ousted from her job in 2005 and last year served as a top surrogate for John McCain’s presidential bid.

One of the big issues, possibly the big issue, of the campaign should be climate change, which should be something of a hoot. Whatever Fiorina’s career at HP, no doubt she is quite a bit more scientifically savvy than Boxer who has been the most slavish of global warming true believers. The thought of watching them discuss the subject is amusing. I wonder what Boxer would make of such things as the role of sun spots in climate and the Medieval Warming Period – or if she has even heard of the latter. After all, it’s not in Al Gore’s movie. I can’t wait to find out.

I was told there would be no Spanish on this webblog.

She is also one of the oddest persons outside Congress, having shared a table next to her in a restaurant and then a airplane seat next to hers six months later — made me miss S.I. Hayakawa…

  3. “I wonder what Boxer would make of such things as the role of sun spots in climate and the Medieval Warming Period”….amusingly, Carly’s undergraduate degree is in philosophy & medieval history.

Don’t like Spanish? I agree, Δώδεκα χρόνια στην γερουσίας looks a lot spiffier. And that’s δώδεκα χρόνια too many.

Senator Boxer may well believe the Medieval Warming Period was the 14th century era that generated the legend of California as an island of milk and honey, a fictional paradise peopled by black Amazons and ruled by a Queen Califia. Too bad it wasn’t Queen Barbara.

  5. Joking, dude.

But you’re right. In that spirit always remember يسوع هو الطريق . And also, الملك الشمس هي أفضل كاتب FYI.

    Good Luck to Carly.
I have lived in this state for 50 years and there is no way in the world that any moderate Republican is going to beat Ms. Boxer. The media will paint Carly as some sort of evil doer who will let the children starve and shut down the schools.
I think it is time we conservatives in California create a party that will fight (beat, kick, hit, shout at, lie about, laugh at, and out spend) the dems until they squeal like the little pigs they are.
    Good Luck to California

I’ve been following CA Assemblyman Chuck DeVore’s campaign for US Senate. I know he’s an underdog, but he is a very, very impressive fellow. If smarts, gravitas, confidence, and integrity count for anything – he’s your man.

Yes, we have to get behind DeVore. Carly has not entered the race- the electon is 15 months away.

I am a former HP employee – I left the company a few years before Fiorina took over but still know a lot of people working there. Most are very bitter about her, including some women who were at first very enthused about a female heading such a high-profile company.

Some may ascribe the resentment merely to old-timers resistant to change. But when you look at the performance of HP both before and after Fiorina’s tenure it is clear she simply did a very poor job of running the company. I hope the Republicans can come up with a better candidate; I’ll have to look into DeVore.

    Gary:

Boxer is a disaster. She is mean, and petty and liberal to the point of brain dead. I am sure that there will be people with personal feelings about Carly because of HP…in fact I am sure there would be people with personal feelings about almost anyone who came from a corporate background. But if Carly has a chance to beat Boxer, then it would be crazy for Republicans to dump her and go with an unknown just because of some disgruntled employees.

  11. Gary…one thing to keep in mind is that Carly is running for Senator, not Governor…ie, *not* for an executive position.

There are people who are good at understanding complex situations and recommending appropriate solutions but just don’t have the particular constellation of skills needed to run a large organization. I don’t know if Carly is one of them, but maybe..

I give Boxer a better chance of winning a beauty contest against Carrie Prejean than winning in 2010.

Harken back deep into the past to about maybe 1994. Huge Republican landslide! Hillarycare done it. Now we’ve got TARP, Government Motors, cap and trade, huge deficits and a couple of other things. Plus a health care proposal that has enraged the electorate.

It’s going to be an ugly, gory, bloody spectacle. The mayor of Tustin could blow her away.

    I can’t wait.

The fact that Arnold is nominally a Republican is probably Boxer’s best asset for 2010. When Democrats control all levers of power on the state and national level and things are going bad, there are no Republicans to blame and even liberal states like New York can see Democratic wipe-outs (as was the case in the 1993-94 period when Giuliani and then Pataki were elected mayor and governor there in the wake of the Dems’ big national win in 1992).

Boxer faces the same problem — she’s going to have to defend what’s going on in Washington right now, and will be trying to use the “Blame Bush” mantra next fall, 20 months after he left office. Then you’ll also have the state elections on tap, where voters are angry at the Democratic-controlled California legislature. That leaves Arnold to shoulder the blame for everything, not just from Boxer but from whomever the Democrats nominate for governor. And since Schwarznegger’s negative ratings haven’t exactly been because he’s governed too far to the right, means while he might be the most likely scapegoat for California Dems next year, he’s only marginally an effective one (Boxer’s more likely attack will be on Fiona’s controversal depature from H-P, though by the time she gets through with it, she and the other Democrats will have the computer giant sounding like Enron).

I feel for you Mr. Simon. Until recently my senators were Chuck Schummer and Hilary Clinton.

But I think you are mistaken about a election debate on climate change. Boxer would win hands down. Fiorina would be debating on facts, logic and reason. Boxer needs only to preach to her brain dead choir. If Boxer were to acknowledge and facts, her party faithful would bolt on her. She knows that, they know that, so Boxer would stick to her dog and pony show, and then its all up to the cerebral California voters to decide who’s the best dressed.

Trust me on this, as I said, Chuck Schummer is my senator.
