Campaign ’08: Obama on Defense

June 13, 2008 - 1:42 pm - by Roger L Simon

Obama, leading in the polls, has obviously decided to play defense:

Presidential rivals Barack Obama and John McCain have failed to agree on joint town hall appearances.

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said in a statement Friday that he offered to meet McCain in five joint appearances between now and the Nov. 4 election. But only one of those was a town hall meeting.

McCain wanted them to appear together in 10 town hall meetings that would be unscripted with questions from voters in the audience.

Obama preferred one town hall, plus three traditional debates and an in-depth debate on foreign policy.

NOTE TO BARACK: Playing defense from a lead is not always the best policy, as in last night’s Laker game.

  1. What I’d like to see now is at every McCain town hall, have an empty chair with a nameplate for “Senator Obama”, along with a reminder that he couldn’t bring himself to participate.

I like what somebody from the McCains camp said.

“Obama has more preconditions to debate McCain than he does to meet Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.”

    I love it.

Of course he’s reluctant to face McCain. He *knows* he’ll get lacerated.

His whole approach is to sell a bag of goods on “hope” alone, because he knows he can’t deliver.

In that sense, he’s worse than Jimmy Carter. Carter actually believed he was qualified to be president (even though he clearly wasn’t); Obama knows he’s not up to the job, and is covering with posturing and bluster.

Without media support, Obama would’ve been laughed clear out of the Senate by now. As it is, his rhetoric has taken on a life of its own.

    God help us all.

The last Gallup tracking poll shows the race getting tighter. I know it is impossible to make judgments based on polls this far in advance, but Barack did not get much of a bump. He has had a bad week too.

Without a teleprompter Obama is a sliced bread after it has been heated for say… a BLT.

    I don’t know if I can say toast ;)

    Obama on Defense: “We surrender!”

A few years ago I sometimes entertained the notion that maybe the nation would get behind a Dem president and fight the damn war with a united front, if that’s what it would take. I have since come to my senses.

“Without media support, Obama would’ve been laughed clear out of the Senate by now.”

One should also never underestimate the value of Barack “Barry” Obama’s Harvard University credentials. He is an intellectually shallow man but his efforts and I.Q were sufficient enough for him to become a lawyer. But what in hell does this have to do with economic and national defense issues? Obama has shown little evidence that he even begins to understand these matters.

Someone who graduates from Harvard Law is not a dummy! However, we must cease exaggerating its importance. Do yourself a favor: try imagining that Obama is instead a graduate of “North Dakota State College.” Would he be given the time of day?

So it’s not quite half-time, he’s up by a field goal, and Obama has already gone into prevent defense?

Do the Democrats even want to win?
