Thanks, in part, to Lisa Kaplan, the spouse of Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA), the State Dept. has issued a new report to Congress on anti-Semitism, for the first time linking the ancient bias to its new avatar, antiZionism. Bill Bradley and I did a video interview with Shermna (you can also find a pdf of the report there) and naturally the subject of Rev. Wright came up. Isn’t the reverend’s language similar to the anti-Semitism/anti-Zionism of the Durban Conference, etc.?

As someone who often runs into Brad at community events in Sherman Oaks and have to listen to his same silly opening lines, and who just watched his squirming on the issue of Jewish support, my guess is that pigs may just fly and Brad votes McCain.
He understates the Jewish communities feelings on BO. I’ve asked and I don’t think there is going to be a lot of support. In fact, my wife’s g/f’s mother who is Catholic and has never voted for a Republican in her 76 years will definitely push the R button. My non scientific analysis that many will either stay away or vote other than they have in the past. Forget about those that won’t vote him on race alone.
I keep telling my Dem friends that a year ago, I wasn’t very confident. This should be a fun year.

I have little feedback on global anti-Semitism, but rather can only offer a petite vignette from a wilderness Wyoming trout stream last summer with a shocking exchange involving a well-to-do WASP from the East coast with whom I’ve fly fished on occasion for years.
I believe the subject came up as we hiked to our destination as I happily recounted my spring trip to Israel in March, 2007. While he was tying his fly on, he had a true Bill Clinton (2008) moment, got red in the face, and started a rant against Israel that left me speechless.
When I recovered enough to respond, I said that I had not known he was anti-Semitic. He roared back at me that he was NOT anti-Semitic, just anti-Zion. Things went downhill from there in such a shocking way that before we had even gotten started fishing, the day was ruined and essentially over.
It was the first time I had seen anti-Semitism masking as anti-Zionism. It left me so shaken that I’m not sure I will ever see this man again. He was having a power dinner party the next week to which I was univited was we silently trudged back to his SUV. I was relieved to have been spared.
