I’m supposed to give the real skinny on the Dennis Miller Show tomorrow, but… as a preview…. assuming it doesn’t change radically after tonight’s results… the buzz among the politically obsessed (who else attends something called the Politics Online Conference?)… is amazement… call it even shock and awe… that Obama may have shot himself in the foot over NAFTA at the last possible moment to save Hillary’s campaign. Of course, these are the political cognescenti and ahead of the curve on such things, so the voters may not have caught up with it. But the further buzz is that they will and things like this will make Obama a weak candidate in the Fall. Ironically, Hillary would be the stronger Dem candidates, although the polls have been showing Obama the stronger for some time. Call it the political “futures” market.
What’s the talk of the Politics Online Conference

Naftagate has official legs.
Obama was not ready for prime time a year ago, and apparently he’s still not ready.
Additionally, he had some things to say about gay marriage that was quite blunt. I happened to hear a tape of it on the Hugh Hewitt show. Hewitt’s website has the quote pasted into a blog entry.
Hillary Clinton will probably win in both Texas and Ohio—and it won’t make a bit of difference. The Obama train has already left the station. There will be much anger and bitterness if she captures the nomination. Too many black voters believe “it’s our turn.” Only a relatively small drop from the normal 90% the Democrats normally take for granted may prove disastrous on Election Day. I also agree with the theory that Hillary subconsciously wants John McCain to win. She thinks he will be just a one term president.
Now that’s interesting, Godzilla. Obama doesn’t have the guts to be for gay marriage. And I am.
Religious issues are among the quagmires of BS in our culture. I don’t believe any of the politicians when they tell you their beliefs. It’s all about voters. I don’t see any of them as even remotely spiritual people. Especially Huckabee who seems like an afternoon talk show host.
“Hillary Clinton will probably win in both Texas and Ohio—and it won’t make a bit of difference.”
I know sure you’re right, David Thompson. You could be but… comapre it to a sport we both love – basketball. Sometimes you’ve got “the big mo’” and sometimes it switches to the other side. Remember – the media have a vested interest in “big mo’” switching. They make more money. Still… I’m not betting either way. Just watching.
“You could be but… comapre it to a sport we both love – basketball. ”
The basketball analogy leaves something to be desired because neither of us will be embittered if the opposing team ultimately wins the championship. We won’t be complaining that the hometown guys should have won because “it’s our turn.” Barack Obama may have been eliminated a few months ago and everybody would have simply shrugged their shoulders. It’s now too late. Hillary Clinton can capture the nomination only if the super delegates switch their votes to her. This will enrage too many within the black community. Violent incidents during the convention are even likely to occur.
I know sure you’re right, David Thompson.
David “Skywalker” Thompson posts here?? Cool!!!
Rush pushed Hill over Texas.
Roger, it was even worse than that. For some reason, Hewitt didn’t have the most damning part of Obama’s quote pasted in. Obama actually said he was against gay marriage. Here’s a fuller quote:
Here’s a link to the article:
The Link
The thing is, the big controversy being raised isn’t Obama’s stark statement about being against gay marriage. It’s the dueling scriptures aspect, pitting “Jesus against Paul” that has the religious conservatives bent out of shape. Personally, I think Obama raised quite a few democratic eyebrows with his announcement that he is against gay marriage. Democrats might actually be too stunned to even react yet. You just don’t hear democrat politicians openly state they are against gay marriage.
I don’t know if Hillary winning last night will be enough to change the end game or not, but it pokes a hole in the Obama hot air balloon.
The thing is the guy not only screwed up on NAFTA, he stalked out of a press conference as if he just could not believe these people would be mean to him. I have news for Obama, if he can not stand and take a couple of less than fawning questions from the American media…then he does not look like a strong unifying leader. He looks like a brat.
We shall see what he see. As of this morning there is less than a hundred delegate gap between Obama and Clinton.
Godzilla:
Black preachers are against gay marriage. This is not an area in which they are liberal, not at all. Just like hispanic voters are not comfortable with an African American President. We all have our prejudices, whether we admit it or not.
“Black preachers are against gay marriage.”
If an Obama presidency is to be guided by ‘scripture’ and not the constitution (the one mentioned in the oath) I think we at the very least deserve to know that.
It time for the fawning press to stop being afraid and start doing its job.
One day people will wake up and Obama will be in office getting subpoenaed.
So, I believe in civil unions that allow a same-sex couple to visit each other in a hospital or transfer property to each other.
Sorry to be somewhat off-topic, but this is one of my (many) pet peeves. Both of these issues are total fabrications. Whatever your feelings about same-sex marriage, your reason to be for or against it should not be based on these issues. I was just visiting a relative in intensive care. The hospital did not care who was doing the visiting. The only restriction was that there would be no more than two people in the room at the same time. An accident victim in the next room had approximately 15-20 people rotating two at a time in and out of his room. As to the second issue, where is it written that you can only transfer property to a person you are married to? Yes if you die intestate your spouse will be guaranteed to get some of your property. However, the disposition of your property will not necessarily be to your wishes. In other words, if you don’t have a will, you have no control of who gets your property. If you do make a will then you can give it to anyone you want.
