Once more showing himself to be a true fighter against genocide (Schindler’s List) and not an addled apologist for terror (Munich), Steven Spielberg has walked out on the Beijing Olympics for a good reason:

“I have made repeated efforts to encourage the Chinese government to use its unique influence to bring safety and stability to the Darfur region of Sudan,” Spielberg wrote. “Although some progress has been made …the situation continues to worsen and the violence continues to accelerate.”

“With this in mind, I find that my conscience will not allow me to continue with business as usual,” he added. “At this point, my time and energy must be spent not on Olympic ceremonies, but on doing all I can to help bring an end to the unspeakable crimes against humanity that will continue to be committed in Darfur.”

Right on, as we used to say. I don’t it was intentional, but this is a fitting salute to Cong. Tom Lantos who died yesterday and had his own things to say about the reactionary Chinese government.

Good for Spielberg but Mia Farrow is the real heroine of this story since she’s the one who caught his ear on this matter and has been relentlessly on it.

Roger, shouldn’t somebody in PJM do an expose on what total pos crooks the IOC members are? I want the IOC to expire almost as much as the MSM.

  2. Good for him.

Would it be uncharitable to ask why Darfur bothers him but T’ian An Men didn’t?

  3. 3. Roger

Well, Charlie, let’s be charitable and encourage people when they do the right thing. I’m sure Spielberg was bothered by T’ian An Men, but probably rationalized it… in the past, etc. Darfur is the present. He did the right thing here.

I was privileged to see Tom Lantos go after Yahoo et al on their disgraceful cooperation with the Chinese Govt (they had revealed the names of people who had used their servers. These people, of course, were jailed.)

That great Tom Lantos asked the bobble heads lined up in front of him: have any of you attempted to help the families of those unfortunates you have delivered into the hands of the Chinese Government?

Amazing. It was so obvious that not one of those rich men (Yahoo was represented there, along with 3 other huge hi tech companies) had ever considered that he should be responsible for his very ugly action.

I would imagine that China is in the midst of “sweeping” their Beijing streets clean of unsightly poor people, so as to impress the visitors to the Olympics. China is definitely not a nice country; congratulations to Spielberg for doing this.

Steven Spielberg is actually taking to task the evils committed by dark skin people. What has brought about this change? Should I hold my breath waiting for his Hollywood buddies to do likewise? Lastly, will we see a change in the type of movies made by Spielberg? Has he got over his “Munich” silliness?

  6. Suggest to make a slight change to your first sentence (add “only”):

“Once more showing himself to be a true fighter against genocide (Schindler’s List) and not ONLY an addled apologist for terror (Munich)”

China’s environmental record – an inconvenient truth.
