How bad is the still expanding scandal in the United Nations’ multi-billion-dollar procurement division? Based on a still-secret internal investigation, the answer is: for the U.N., it is just as bad as the gigantic Oil-for-Food debacle – or maybe worse.

This is not a problem, it’s the way the rest of the world does business.
Why would they even bother with trying to pretend there are consequences for the investigation?
Even “disgraced” diplomats keep the same pay, the same immunity status, etc. Do people even bother to read any report (including the Volker report)?
The UN has become a honeypot for third world elites. The First World is supporting the whole thing because we can afford to do so … and it makes us feel Kindly and Good and Cosmopolitan.
But the 3rd world elites are almost totally dependent upon the Turtle Bay Largesse.
Should we be so surprised that the “procurement” process is completely corrupt??
Their activities are only a mirror of our own Do Goodism. They get the great 1st class treatment and all the money, we get all the good feelings. Many people think that is a reasonable and fair exchange. I know that I do. Especially when I haven’t seen good ol’ Kofi bloviating on TV, for awhile.
When you think about it, Good Feelings don’t come cheaply, do they?????
There may not be jail time waiting for these guys but I do think that there will be consequences in that the UN will lose some influence. The UN was rebuffed in terms of being the primary provider of aid after the tsunami and other recent disasters.
This kind of corruption might also lead to people wondering about NGOs in general and whether they are legitimate or not.
For an eye-opening look at the pervasiveness of the corruption, read Pedro Sanjuan’s book “The UN Gang: A Memoir of Incompetence, Corruption, Espionage, Anti-Semitism and Islamic Extremism at the UN Secretariat.”
