Hillary vs. Rudy?

November 20, 2005 - 6:44 am - by Roger L Simon

The AP’s Marc Humbert does a thumb sucker about a Hillary-Rudy race in 2008 – which is simultaneously two-minutes away and off on the other side of the space-time continuum. I admit the mathc-up would be first-rate political drama, but Hillary-Condi might be even better. Of course, we could have… reaching for the remote here… a Frist-Kerry pairing.

What a writer Humbert is! Here’s a paragraph:

Giuliani has spent more time in elected office. He was the No. 3 official in the Justice Department under President Reagan and was the U.S. attorney in New York City.

As far as I know, neither of those is an elective office. I’ve always thought that it was a good idea to have all the sentences in a paragraph address the same point. Or maybe Humbert thinks that both of those are elective offices.

Rudy’s an individualist and his talents would be wasted in the senate where he’d be only one of a hundred senators expected to work together on endless dreary committees.

He should run for governor of New York State where he could make a real difference and then from the governor’s chair to the White House.

Frist vs. Kerry? I know you are joking Roger, but that is one scary thought. Even America isn’t that stupid.

  4. 4. Coisty

Mark Warner versus fellow Virginian George Allen or John McCain. I say McCain (not popular with the base) because the GOP may be in such a mess by early 2008 they may cling on to anyone who can win.

    “Frist-Kerry”

Great, Roger. Way to ruin a good day. Can we just not even mention the possibility?

    Frist – Kerry

Could rank at the top of the most “boring race of all time”. Two of the most uninspiring personalities imaginable. A race is just not the word for a 24 month interminable slog through inanities.(finger way down throat)

  7. I dunno about Rice.

After she rammed through that terrible deal on the Rafah crossing in Gaza just last week, against advice from all the heads of security in Israel, leaving the way open for the Palestinians to have free access to importing weapons from Egypt and soon from their own seaport, I’m not feeling too fond of Rice at all; and I suspect a lot of other Jewish hawk types are not either.

It feels like a complete about-face from the first Administration to this one, on the US holding the Palestinians to standards about fighting terror. It’s hard to believe that disaster won’t follow from this.

If it does come down to Hillary vs. Rudy, I can’t see how Hillary can possibly win.

Rudy is as popular a GOP candidate in New York City as it’s possible to find. He might win NYC outright – he would certainly take at least 40%+.

For the Democratic candidate to win New York State, he/she must do well in New York City, because much of the rest of the state trends Republican. If Hillary draws only about half of New York City, she loses New York State.

It’s just about impossible for a Democratic candidate to win the overall electoral vote without New York. Any set of other states that have to be garnered to make up for it are almost certainly beyond the ability of Hillary to win.

  9. I keep hearing about McCain. Hasn’t anyone noticed he’s old and in poor health?
