People have lost control of themselves on Capitol Hill as well. Is it something in the water? From the Washington Post’s report on today’s quick vote on Rep. John Murtha’s proposal…
But the maneuvering opened wide the chamber’s raw partisan divisions and prompted a tumultuous scene, which Capitol Hill veterans called among the most wild and emotional they had ever witnessed.

Is it something in the water?–Roger
I don’t think so, nor do I think what happened today in Congress is at all a ‘bad’ thing.
I personally am fed up to the proverbial wazoo with the tone and tantrums of the ‘loyal opposition’ and their running dog supporters in the media.
This is a WAR folks, and our useless elites, perverted media, and the Democratic Party are treating it as politics as usual, if by politics you mean the complete lack of any discernible moral base or intellectual honesty.
How can it be termed ‘losing control’ when only one side had any control to start with? I think a more appropriate description is ‘evening up the playing field’.
And I say this with absolutely no reservations—- YES. I AM questioning certain people’s patriotism and/or their degree of social sanity.
This has been a long time coming and frankly is WAY past due.

The Republicans are long overdue in responding to the craven and dishonest attacks from the Democrats and the MSM. They need to keep it up, even though the MSM spins it as best they can to make the Republican response to be a political trick rather than an honest side of the debate.
I wont use the T word for the current left, but they are certainly showing an incredible stupidity, a willingness to sweep history under the rug, and an opportunism at the cost of their country’s security.
There is no excuse for this behavior, just like there was no excuse for the Dems campaign behavior last year.
Common, W, keep the heat up. Talk every day if you have to, but get the word out about how the Dems are lying, outright lying about the rationale for the war. Get the word out about what a disaster it would be to set a date for withdrawal. Let folks know that the conjunction of terrorism and WMDs is an existential threat to our society, and that we should respond as such. Let the world (especially Iran) know that a major attack on us will be met with a very violent retaliation against all nations that we suspect, even if the attack has no return address. Let the world remember what we did to Japan and Germany in WW-II, and give the American people the will to do it again.
I think that Al Qaeda may have avoided major attacks against the US since 9-11 because they know history better than the Democrats. They realize (as Yamamoto did) that if they attack us severely enough, nothing will stop our retaliatory wrath as we cleanse the world of Islamofascism; but, if they leave us alone, the forces of idiocy in our country – the Democrats, the MSM, academia and Hollywood – will force us to withdraw and to elect weak leaders, after which the Islamofascists can attack with impunity. They need only look at the history of the Vietnam War to see the success of this strategy.

The Bushes are poor counterpunchers; they are
not like the Clintons who were experts.
Bush Senior’s presidency went to hell in a handbasket because he was so fair and gentlemanly, so Yale.
Bush, the Younger, better quickly understand that his presidency is turning to mush because he does not react fast, effectively and counterpunch in his second term; “the 2004 election continues, Mr. President.”
The House fight on C Span last night was classic Hastert/DeLay “Smackdown” under the rules of the House. Counterpunching at its finest, far better than Clintonesque counterpunching [because it was not smarmy] but according to the House rules.
The “John Murtha Show,” a fascinating blend of Democratic/MSM foxtrot is wonderfully orchestrated as “a moment of conscience” by this aging Pentagon friendly Vietnam Vet, loyal friend of the doughboy. Of course, to believe this stuff you would have had to live your whole life on the Westside of Manhattan and read the Times for thirty years. Even the reliably conservative David Brooks last night on the NewsHour was mouthing that this was “a defining moment for the Bush presidency.”
Maybe he should have said that Bush, the Younger, better slip on his boxing gloves, insert a roll of nickels in his fists and take some counterpunching lessons from Denny Hastert.
It was a smart move and should take some of the wind out of the Democrats for a moment or two. (You know they’ll come back with some damned thing.) The GOP should always be that bold.
1) It gave the Dems much-deserved bad exposure and sowed confusion among their ranks for the evening.
2) It forced the Dems to put up or shut up and take responsibility for their previous actions.
3) It also pissed off the Kos crew.
In short, a productive evening.
Perhaps the Dems will proceed more judiciously in the future, knowing that the GOP is not always going to lie down and take it.
From the story:
She [Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio] told colleagues that “a few minutes ago I received a call from Colonel Danny Bubp,” an Ohio legislator and Marine Corps Reserve officer. “He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message: that cowards cut and run, Marines never do.”
IT’S ABOUT FRICKIN’ TIME!!! Let’s do some spade calling here. Murtha is advocating that the United States surrender to a crappy gang modeled on the Columbian drug mafia in a fight that he voted to pick. Let the people ponder the merit of that proposal.
al-jazeera splashed the Murtha proposal on the front page.
Hope today they splashed 403-3 against pulling out.
When Jean Schmidt let ‘em have it, I stood up and cheered!
I also emailed W to keep it up! Enough is enough. Let the Copperheads face the music.
Then some rushed her and she removed her statement.
She needed to stand her ground.
To all dems and libs. Your “all politics all the time” came back to bite you last night. You couldn’t hide anymore. I don’t want to gloat, in my wildest dreams I would hope to see the dems recognize that the country fought this fight in the election in 2004 and they lost. The House fought it again last night and they lost again. Let this be the stake in the ground, that we aren’t going to cut and run, and let’s go forward together to win this thing we’re in and get on with solving the Iranian problem.
Ok, jedrury, the gloves are off. I’m getting out my rolls of nickels, too!
Bush Senior’s presidency went to hell in a handbasket because he was so fair and gentlemanly, so Yale…
I resent that! I’m a Yalie, and I am not gentlemanly!
More seriously, here’s Mohammed on Murtha.

This is excellent. Every time some gasbag gets up and says something this stupid, the Republicans should give the Democrats 15 or 20 minutes to disavow it. If they don’t, say “Fine; let’s vote”. Make them pay for their traitorous jackassery.
I am so disgusted with the democrats in the House and the entire senate.
I’ve read that the reason they are doing this is because the draw down of troops is in the offing anyway (because we’re winning) so they want to take credit for it. To say that we’re leaving because of their pressure.
So in essence, our troops win, we redeploy them and the democrats (and their MSM supporters) say we’ve lost and the democrats were right to insist on redeployment.
If this is indeed their political strategy, I am overwhelmed by how disgusting it is.
They are not even close to patriotic. They are traitors.
Every now and then someone needs to call the Democrats on their crap. Last night was one of those times. Enough is enough. Throw a little cold water in their faces and shout “Wake up”.
It was no more a stunt than that closed session of the Senate was.
I am ashamed of the Democrats.
And jamie, you are always a gentleman.
I, on the other hand, am a cantankerous old biddy.
Terrye,
And jamie, you are always a gentleman.
Terrye, you’re kind to say that, but that’s just my internet persona; in real life I’m a mean bas**rd!

Whatever Murtha’s qualities as a Marine, and I have my doubts, his proposals are simply stupid. Discount the idiocy of withdrawl for a moment and his remarks about “American occupation”. He proposes to leave small Rapid Reaction units in Iraq to support the Iraqi army.
Murtha was an intelligence officer, which doesn’t assume intelligence in the man, and he’s a tactical moron if he thinks Rapid Reaction or small Airmobile units will present fewer friendly casualties to the US. If he ever dropped into a hot LZ, which is where these kinds of units are routinely deployed, he’d know that.
He doesn’t, and I’d claim here that a Marine officer who only gets a Bronze along with two Purple Hearts probably didn’t deserve one or more of them. Silvers are the standard. Note Kerry (?).
There are two possibilities to the obscene stupidities of this man. One, he wants to undercut a potential ethics investigation into his involvement with defense contracts, or he wants to boast about withdrawls that are already planned by the administration. Maybe he thought the reward was greater than finding himself praised on Michael Moore’s website and Al Jazeers.
In any case, whatever you think of the war, Murtha’s a jackass
I don’t know what all the fuss was about. It was terrific theater, the bad guys are in a tizzy, and the good guys won.
T shirts here: “Marines never do”
Jamie:
Thanks for the cut to Mohammed, I will read it soon.
Of course, the “John Murtha Show” is a total anticipatory jump start to next year’s modest draw down. This is the way scenes are sent to the big time in DC. So Murtha gets the word from his friends at the Pentagon and the strategy is to preempt the administration; “let Big John go front and center and steal the show.”
What I enjoy tho is the heat generated by the Hastert/DeLay tactic of bringing the resolution to the floor and actually calling for a vote.
David Obey approaching heart attack level and young charismatic Harold Ford, Jr. rushing across the aisle for a “little chin music.”
I helpfully offer these proposals to the Democratic Party to get back on track after the stupid suggestion by Murtha to “run away, run away we’re French.”
1. The M-16 didn’t work in Somalia, it’s not working now, it needs to be replaced by the M-14. Give a contract to American companies (Ruger, Springfield Armory, Colt, S&W) and get it done. Yes this also means switching to 7.62 NATO from the anemic .223 and requires spending money. Get it done.
2. GI’s need a new pistol, the 9 mm is not getting it done (and yes sadly they need them too often). Go back to the 1911 and .45 ACP right now, contract with American companies to get it done.
3. GI’s need a lot more close air support; buy more planes now.
4. GI’s need a replacement for the SAW in .223 with something in 7.62 NATO that works and doesn’t jam. Buy them now from American companies.
5. GI’s need a LOT more UAVs at the squad level. Buy them now from American companies and get them over there.
6. Pay for all of these by raising taxes and cutting pork. Target Republican Pork like the Bridge to Nowhere if you want.
This is hardball politics AND good policy. It puts the heat on Bush where he least likes it and supports the troops. It’s solid stuff that requires a commitment to spend money and will help save lives.
