The Associated Press buries the lede in its report of the captured suicide bomber in Amman. It takes until the sixth paragraph for the sometimes insurgent-friendly or enabling AP (they of the Pulitzer Prize in photography for miraculous on-the-scene photographs of “insurgent” bomb attacks) to inform us that this bomb-laden woman, Sajida Mubarak Atrous al-Rishawi, was “dressed for a party” while riding in a taxi with her husband to the Radisson Hotel. In other words, these psychopaths were intentionally headed for a Muslim wedding where they would blow everybody up, including themselves. King Abdullah had it right – “these people are insane.”

UPDATE: This may be one of the most amazing pieces of live TV since Ruby shot Oswald – the woman has confessed on Jordanian television.

Looking nervous and wringing her hands, al-Rishawi described the attack on the Radisson. The Grand Hyatt and Days Inn hotels also were bombed.

“My husband detonated (his bomb) and I tried to explode my belt but it wouldn’t,” she said. “People fled running and I left running with them.”

Another chickenhawk, I guess. I don’t know about the wisdom of sticking this homicidal lunatic on television, but they did it. And we’ll all be watching. Talk about reality TV! Was her husband the contemptible human being who murdered Rima Assad?

Shouldn’t the headline be “It’s My Party and You Can DIE If You Want To”?

You’re right. They’re insane. That’s something that makes it impracticable to follow historical rules of engagement, and poses the problem of evolving new ones, giving proper weight to the rights of suspects and accused while protecting our country.

  2. Sky News is reporting that the woman is Zarqawi’s sister. The link is on PrairiePundit.

  3. 3. SJ

Actually, she’s the sister of Zarqawi’s former right hand man in Iraq.

Roger: “I don’t know about the wisdom of sticking this homicidal lunatic on television, but they did it.”

Me: Given that some Arabs out there reflexively believe that Israel was behind the bombings, I don’t see how this could hurt.

I have noticed that Arabs are not in the least politcally correct. When they hate someone, they hate them.

So they have no compunctions about putting this woman on TV and calling her insane.

I doubt vey seriously if they are going to be concerned with John McCain’s delicate sensibilities when they interrogate her either.

“Was her husband the contemptible human being who murdered Rima Assad?”

According to the AP story, “Al-Rishawi’s brother was al-Zarqawi’s deputy, Mubarak Atrous al-Rishawi, who was killed by U.S. forces in the one-time terrorist stronghold of Fallujah, Muasher said, adding it was unclear when he was killed.”

Another question might just as well be, was her brother the contemptable human being who murdered Margaret Hassan?

The Associated Press buries the lede

Back in October 1st I came up with a term for the AP’s routine lede burials: Associated Press Deficit Disorder, APDD:

the innatention of Associated Press and other news agencies to the actual words said by a person who doesn’t fit what AP wants to hear.

My paper trimmed the AP story to excise the “these people are insane” quote. Wouldn’t want to cast asperions, or anything!

  10. Yes, based on her confession, her husband murdered Rima Assad and dozens of others. They didn’t go looking for Westerners at the hotel. They chose to attack a Jordanian Muslim wedding party.

    “these people are insane.”

Translation: We’ve been supporting them as much as we can behind the scenes and they did this anyway!

I would be very interested in a forensic examination of the “failed” belt. She could be a chickenhawk, or she might have a trace of humanity that hasn’t been surrendered to Allah yet.

    Roger,

Your previous post referred to the ladies name as Rima Akkad, not Assad. Perhaps it is a misprint. In any event, it is revolting that human beings can devastate other human lives in the name of religion.

  13. Don’t mean to knit-pick. The Pulitzers were for miraculous on-the-scenes photos of executions, not bomb attacks, I believe.
