I always get a kick out of black individuals like Lew Alcindor who change their name to Kareem Abdul Jabbar. By all rights, they should be contemptuous towards Islam. Political correctness is not a brand new phenomenon. I think it is fair to assert that by 1965 it was deemed unacceptable refer to Islam as anything but a religion of peace and overall wonderfulness. No, this nonsense did not start yesterday morning.
Throughout history, the best way to avoid being a slave (of one kind or another) is to excel in military technology. There is no other way on this earth to protect against living at the mercy of others. Pacifism and surrender look identical (equally wonderful) to every evil tyrant that the world has ever seen. The distinction is lost on them.

His conclusion is that Europe, poor and backward compared to the Muslim and Byzantine Empires, had one export that brought in enough wealth to build the basis of post Roman wealth: slaves.
I had wondered how Charlemagne, for example, had managed to build his huge empire, with all the costs involved with annual warfare. He was, of course, invading Europe’s north and east, both areas of non-Christian, populations, and the resulting people could be sold to the merchants that followed in the Frankish army train.
The thing is, in a pre-industrial, non-Christian world, slaves are an acceptable way to have the more unpleasant jobs done as cheaply as possible.
John Keegan, the great military historian, thinks that we should be able to visualize a world without war, because ridding the world of slavery was so unexpected and so magnificent. Of course, if the Islamists win this war of ours, slavery will reappear through the world.
The Sudan, by the way, has always been a major entrepot for slave trading. The Brits tried to stamp it out in the 19th century, but I guess it is back again – China has never had any real problem with slavery either… and China is the Big Power (along with France) that is now dominating that part of Africa.
