Start Me Up too!

May 10, 2005 - 6:28 pm - by Roger L Simon

My birthday’s in November (age to be determined) and these guys (ages to be determined) are going to be in Anaheim on the 4th and SF on the 13th of that month. I blush to admit, although I’ve seen their lead singer do his thespian number on a friend’s movie set a few years ago, I’ve never seen the band perform live and this may be my last chance… Well, maybe not, considering how they keep coming back as if Mestopheles were their road manager. Anyway, this time I’m gonna be there and I’m telling Sheryl I want her to buy us tix for my birthday. But she better move fast because they go on sale tomorrow morning. At my age, I want good seats. I don’t want to risk damaging my sacroiliac when I start boogieing to “Street Fightin’ Man.”

Oh, wow, the Stones… my dad used to listen to them, God rest his soul…

  2. 2. Luther McLeod

Please forgive my lack of relevant comment.

But Richard, a true gut laugh. Good job!!

Not at your expense of course, Roger.

  3. 3. ahem

I saw them in Chicago about five years ago and they were going stronger at the end of the show than they were in the beginning. I can’t begin to tell you how impressed I was. Unbelievable show. They put most rockers to shame.

  4. 4. Rick Ballard

Very cruel, Richard. Say, do you think Viagra is going to outbid Geritol for the lead sponsor slot?

  5. 5. PJ

“My dad used to listen to them”?? Oh, sir, you wound me! The Start Me Up tour sponsored by Viagra–now, that works, literally.

It is one group I haven’t seen either but Angels Stadium…that’s big. OTOH, they have a great large TV screen thingie.

You can stay in Anaheim and go to Disneyland the next day, have dinner at Napa Rose or Tapas!

    Ahem,

…they were going stronger at the end of the show than they were in the beginning

Once one has achieved a certain, ummm… level of maturity one cannot use amphetamines indiscriminately. One must wait until the effects are required rather than simply desired.

I can’t believe that they’re not playing in LA proper or San Diego. The last show I saw was at the San Diego Sport’s Arena. Horrible sound but a great show. At $350/ticket, it should be. U2 had a little better sound back in March. It’s a tough place.

The Stones…..cool! I know you’ll get a lot of satisfaction out of the concert. There’s nothing like hearing the best from “our” good old days.

I’ve been fortunate over the last several years to have become a fairly good acquaintance of The Doobie Brothers’ founder Pat Simmons, his wife Cris and drummer Mike Hossack. I spent several hours with them after a show they did here last year, and will see them again at the end of this month. They still put on a fabulous show and the best part is knowing now, that folks I’ve listened to and adored since the ’70s are tremendously nice people.

“Let It Bleed”–world’s number one all-time rock ablum, you betcha !!!

  10. 10. Patrick Tyson

The last time I saw the Stones outdoors…

…and if I’d had one of those I might have been less wasted. I certainly would have been more rested. I think they were great.

    Should be fun.

Larsen— The world’s number one all-time rock album is London Calling or is it Who’s Next? Let It Bleed might be top ten, but then so might Exile on Main Street.

Tyson, I’m sorry, but I was entering High school just as the Beatles were hitting the radio here stateside. THEREFORE, I was in on the beginning, and ERGO that makes the Stones better than the Clash.

  12. 12. PJ

    Buddy, you speak the truth.

  13. 13. Patrick Tyson

    Buddy—

I was going to do my usual we reply, but your comment brought Longview to mind.

From the most amateurish (stage) and at the same time intense (audience) concert I ever participated in…

Bite my lip and close my eyes

    Take me away to paradise

    I’m so damn bored

    I’m going blind

    And loneliness has to suffice

Bite my lip and close my eyes

I was slipping away to paradise

Some say, “Quit or I’ll go blind.”

    But it’s just a myth

…and another lyric that brings me back to my thirteenth year…

    Out here in the fields

    I fight for my meals

I get my back into my living

    I don’t need to fight

    To prove I’m right

I don’t need to be forgiven

    Don’t cry

    Don’t raise your eye

    It’s only teenage wasteland

    Or, if you understand:

    May you stay forever young.

    Sorry, Roger.

Saw the Stones once, in 1972 at the Forum in L.A. Back in the day when the guy in front of you was shooting up and the guy behind you was passing out (or worse). The Stones were incredible (Brian Jones’ replacement Mick Taylor was with them; Ronnie Wood was still with my other fave band, the Faces). No desire to see them now, though.

There’s a rumor that Keith Richards has learned a new chord for this tour. That makes five that he knows.

  16. 16. Syl

Oh, what the hey may as well…

I dated their road manager back in the ’60′s.

And, yes, like that Jacques Brel song of long ago, I’ve forgotten his name.

But he was truly a sweet guy who later got himself messed up with drugs and committed suicide in jail.

Funny thing is, the Stones never meant very much to me. I was never into lyrics, still true today. It’s only the music itself that affects me.

Roger, your comments at the start remind me of the Time notice when Keith Richards married Patti Hansen. Maybe someone has the exact wording, but it followed their standard format on the “people” page of putting the age in parentheses after the name. It went something along the lines of:

“Keith Richards (internal age unknown) married Patti Hansen on…”
