Reform Movement at Google News

March 24, 2005 - 10:21 am - by Roger L Simon

I have no idea if this blog had even a small influence on Google News, but the mega-news aggregator is apparently removing the hate site National Vanguard from its service. Good.

UPDATE: From privateradio.org a useful listing of Google News’ current sources. By far the most cited, ABC News.

PJ Media appreciates your comments that abide by the following guidelines:

1. Avoid profanities or foul language unless it is contained in a necessary quote or is relevant to the comment.

2. Stay on topic.

3. Disagree, but avoid ad hominem attacks.

4. Threats are treated seriously and reported to law enforcement.

5. Spam and advertising are not permitted in the comments area.

Roger, I’m not sure you should even mention the name. They’ll get hits over it.

  2. This story will be repeated over and over again. Despite the claim in the article that news sites are evaluated by a team of editors prior to inclusion, there is a particularly obnoxious left-wing blog called the Nashua Advocate that reports being accepted by Google News 59 days after its first post (on blogspot, on a basic template). It’s not hard to see that a neo-Nazi blog could fly under the radar for a month or two while posting fairly innocuous stuff, then switch over to hate speech once they were accepted.

I e-mailed Google News to complain the day the story broke on LGF and today they sent me a reply. I’m glad to see they corrected this problem.

I’m not too thrilled with any blogs or fringe news groups being included on Google News, but then some people would complain that Fox shouldn’t be included, or ABC or the LA Times.

Maybe they could post a list of their news contributors and allow users to select sites they wish to accept news results from….

“By far the most cited, ABC News.”

Looks like they cite in alphabetical order…

  5. ìI have no idea if this blog had even a small influence on Google News…î

This blog probably did have a modest influence on Google News. The Internet has leveled the playing field. The MSM are no longer the only game in town. Roger also appears occasionally on radio and TV. He has become somebody to be reckoned with. Roger cannot be casually ignored.

There’s no doubt whatsoever that Google has responded to criticism from the Blogosphere.

Although Google are not perfect, my view is that since they’ve responded in this way their adverts should be reinstated and they should be informed that this is the case.

You fought on this issue and you won on this issue. A positive response will help control the Google organism just as a negative response did.

WHAT!?!? Google is answering emails these days?

I noticed, back when Lumpy Riefenstahl’s movie Farenheit 9/11 was getting the bejeebus hyped out of it, that Google was frequently carrying a topic (and sometimes two topics) on his film. This went on hour after hour, day after day, for over a month.

I eventually sent them a couple of emails expressing my surprise at their blanket coverage of his film. I asked if the news topics and stories were entirely random, or did they have a human vetting them. I also asked for clarification as to what their editorial policy was.

They never bothered to acknowledge my emails much less answered them. I guess, all things considered, blow-off letters are tiny step in the right direction. I do know that I was, and still am for that matter, disgusted by their indifference.

Anyhoo… some entertaining alternatives out their. Even though it is a meta-search engine, hence not the total abandonment of Google I would like to find, KartOO is an interesting search engine to play with.

If you are having some problems it states that
There are currently a few problems with the tallying of 2005/Jan 2006. This should be fixed for Feb 1 updates.

that KartOO is funny i found a couple of sites that i hadnt been to b4 also.

Might have Macromedia Flash 8 on my wish list soon…
