People today have no idea what a monumental struggle our Revolution really was. In the first 20 years of its existnce the new US almost collapsed many times and people were openly wondering if life as British subjects had been preferable.
Many years ago I read a book about the Revolution [too long ago to remember a title] which included transcripts of town hall meetings throughout the colonies during the ratification process. Some farmer would stand up and identify himslef as yoeman farmer Smith or whatever and would proceed to give his opinion about the new Constitution. There were people that wanted to outlaw slavery and Catholicism and all kinds of things, in the end the framers ratified the compromise document we have today.
Now the Iraqis are going to have to do the same things and now like then people will have to settle for consensus or fail.
Amen, Terry. I note I had to read almost to the end to learn that the blasts were completely off target and injured no one. Dying gasp of the terrorists, I’d say.
But we must counter those photos from Beirut!! Can’t get too happy now, folks!!
