… as we all know, will be in Iraq. The spin doctors are already hunkering down with their yarn, trying to figure out what constitutes a victory for democracy (how many Sunnis voted, how many Shiites, how religious, how secular, yadda yadda yadda). But instead of the spin doctors, it will be the Iraqis themselves who determine this–and there seems to be growing enthusiasm among them for the democratic process. Both Iraq the Model and the Washington Post are calling it that way, albeit on page 12. [Can't you remember the first rule of journalism--no good news on page one!-ed. Sorry, I forgot. One of those senior moments.]
The Next Big Election…

Roger:
I will tell what I think the real shame is, people are more interested in calling George Bush a mass murderer than they are in giving these folks the same oppurtunites the rest of us take for granted.
Democrats get totally bent out of shape if they think one of their own in Florida did not get to vote, but for folks like Michael Moore Iraqis dying for the chance means nothing.
I am worried about that day I have to admit. I understand that many Sunnis are still in the election and intend to vote. The president of Iraq and his party among them. It could be they will have a higher turnout than we did. I understand the worries about security, even the Iraqi ambassador to the UN said he would favor a delay if it would help security, but I think a delay might just make it worse.
I wish them well. I hope the murderers don’t ruin it for them.
I just hit the DEL (deliver) button on my WayForward machine for a copy of the appropriate NY Times.
Bad news:
IRAQ ELECTION INVALID, EXPERTS SAY
“Low 85% Turnout Indicates Lack of Support for Process”
“International Observers Allege Iranian, Chechen, Syrian Gunmen Underpresented”
“Christine Gregoire to Head Commission Investigating Voting Procedures”

The pro-democracy Iraqis have already won. They are now merely taking care of the remaining nihilists. The actual election is merely frosting on the cake. There is no way that their enemies can stop progress. The United States is finally slapping around Syria. Once that Baathist nation is neutralized, the so-called insurgency will be considerably weakened. The second domino is indeed falling. Perhaps the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be the third?
I may seem cold, but it behooves us to remember that Iraqís population is estimated to be around 25 million people. Thus, if the militants murder some 200 per week, they still havenít even scratched the surface. The economy is improving, and people are going to school and going to sporting events. We need to step back and look at the big picture—which is very encouraging.
Posted this a few ago in the thread on the PLO/Israeli issue.
I think this is relevant here too. For too long the Great Satan (US) and the Little Satan (Islrael) have allowed the Islamic World to use us as their scapegoat for all their woes. When in fact it is their own intransigence of their leaders which has locked them in this endless cycle of violence.
This is a war of ideologies. They are destined to lose because Islamofascism is fatally flawed as it fails to recognized certain universal rights of the people.

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!
FREEDOM FREEDOM FREEDOM
This is the answer in this war of ideologies. Just posted this to the HSPIG Forums Section.

here’s a piece that cuts to the central core of why Islamofascism is a failed ideology. This is the key to ultimately winning this war. After all this is a war of ideologies, ideas, culture, religion, and the free will and universal rights (inalienable) of men and women.

I checked out real clear politcs and there were three articles on Iraq.
One said delay the elections.
One said Iraq was a quagmire.
And one said the neocons were looking for a scapegoat…
But the truth is this thing is taking on a life of its own and I am not sure Allawi could postpone the elections. It seems the people want them, the sooner the better.
The experts be damned.
I actually didn’t think the election could be pulled off on Jan. 30. But it seems Iraqis are enthusiastic and the LLL & MSM are dejected. Hooray!
