Several people have called to my attention that Joseph Hansen passed away a couple of weeks ago. Joseph was the author of the Dave Brandstetter mystery novels with the first “gay detective” (in this case an insurance investigator) in mainstream publishing – at least to my knowledge. We were friends during the 1970s and 80s when we appeared together ocasionally on panels since we were both supposed to be radicals in our genre. It doesn’t seem so revolutionary now (particularly me) but I remember Joseph fondly. He was (like Ray Bradbury) one of those atypical Angelenos who didn’t drive and I would pick him up at his house to ferry him to local mystery writer events. It was then we had some interesting talks. He was always a gentleman, always quietly witty. Rest in peace.
I read two of his books way back when and they were entertaining.
As I recall, he got good reviews but back then it was edgy to read about
a gay detective solving crimes. He probably drew readers because it was edgy.
As I recall, he was careful descriptively about his hero’s sexual preference. It is unfortunate that he has passed aswy.
I read all of Joseph Hansen’s mysteries years ago. I always thought he was a particularly original and unique voice, and that he was doing a much needed service for the gay community. His death is a loss. May he rest in peace.
What it never came out and said it, I think Philo Vance was definitely gay. Very “metrosexual” anyway.
So I check out my library and sure enough, I have THREE of Hansen’s books: Obedience, Gravedigger and The Little Dog Laughed. I keep my books if I think they are good enough to read again. They have to be really good, too, because I have moved a number of times.
Anyway, now I will read these books all over again!
