Our hearts are supposed to be pounding because “Anonymous,” the character who wrote a New York Times op-ed back in 2018, supposedly from inside the Trump administration, has secretly been working on a book that is about to be published.
The book, titled “A Warning,” is being promoted as “an unprecedented behind-the-scenes portrait of the Trump presidency” that expands upon the Times column, which ricocheted around the world and stoked the president’s rage because of its devastating portrayal of Trump in office.
The column described Trump’s leadership style as “impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective,” and noted that “his impulsiveness results in half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless decisions that have to be walked back.”
The author of the column, which was titled “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration” and published Sept. 5, 2018, was known to the Times but identified only as a senior official in the Trump administration. The person has still not been publicly identified.
Oh, really? Excuse me, but why is this person being anonymous if what he or she has to say is true? To keep a job? If Trump is so bad, why would he or she want to work for him in the first place? To support the “resistance” inside the White House and effectuate change? He or she hasn’t been very successful at that so far, to say the least. Wouldn’t the honorable thing be to resign and speak your piece publicly? Making it easier, given the riven state of our politics, finding other employment would be relatively simple and likely considerably more remunerative.
No, “Anonymous” is something of a careerist looking to sell a book via some cheesy hocus-pocus.
But he/she isn’t alone. The whistleblower–whom many, including me, have referred to more accurately as a leaker–is also a coward.
Again, if he/she is telling the truth, what do they have to fear? If he/she is CIA, as has been reported, and his/her accusations were accurate, they would certainly not lose their job. The CIA these days is not on the side of the president. As we can see from the Russia probe, they protect their own (and then some). The whistleblower/leaker could easily be reassigned.
Unfortunately, however, the leaker was not accurate, far from it. A transcript of the Trump-Zelensky phone call demonstrated him/her to be a liar. And liars are generally cowards.
Indeed, we are living in an epidemic of cowardice, surrounded by anonymous leakers at nearly every turn. Whole careers are made and lost on this cowardly behavior. Journalism, as it’s practiced today, depends on it. Washington runs on it, cowardly snivelers whispering to each other on cellphones. When nearly everyone is a coward, cowardice isn’t noticed. It’s part of the zeitgeist. It’s everywhere.
The whistleblower law is supposed to protect people and in certain instances, no doubt it does. But these days it is being used as a cover. It’s part and parcel of the “impeachment inquiry” that is being conducted–in true cowardly fashion–as a Star Chamber behind closed doors. The Democrats are cowards and Adam Schiff is a coward-in-chief. He’s been one for years, always pretending to have some secret information that turns out not to be real. Perhaps, when histories are written, he will be the symbol of our age.
I don’t know about you, but I have no intention of purchasing A Warning. If the author doesn’t have the guts to sign his name, why should I believe him… or her? Unless, of course, it’s a novel. But this is pretending to be fact. I wouldn’t bank on it.
