The Democratic Underground is worried that the Sixth Army may not be able to take Stalingrad: “Walker up by 9-points in new WI Recall poll, WI Dems upset with DNC”. Wisconsin was where the Unions were going to demonstrate their invincible power. Maybe that’s not going to happen.
Greg Sargent: “Top Wisconsin Democrats are furious with the national party — and the Democratic National Committee in particular — for refusing their request for a major investment in the battle to recall Scott Walker… The failure to put up the money Wisconsin Dems need to execute their recall plan comes at a time when the national Republican Party is sinking big money into defending Walker, raising fears that the DNC’s reluctance could help tip the race his way.
The effect of losing Wisconsin for conservatives would be just another loss. The impact of failure there by the Left would be far more severe. Here was where they would school the rebels, pour encourager les autres. But the rebels aren’t being schooled.
The elections aren’t over yet though and the Democrats may still win at the 11th hour. But if the Fat Lady hasn’t sung in Wisconsin, the British newspaper the Independent thinks it has sung for Brussels.
British pro-Europeans have been subdued lately. The antis who warned against the creation of the euro have been in full “told you so” flow since the credit bubble burst nearly four years ago. They are entitled to be, but we cannot allow them to claim the euro’s failure as a vindication of their entire world view.
This newspaper wanted Britain to adopt the euro, but we said in 2003, when the Blair government decided against it, that The Independent on Sunday “accepts the economic conditions are not some marginal irrelevance”. It was never close to being in our economic interest to join the eurozone.
That is the sound of Independent eating crow, together with much of the British Left, who were utterly wrong on the Euro. Not entirely though. The Independent adds, “but we cannot allow them [those whose whose name must not be mentioned] to claim the euro’s failure as a vindication of their entire world view.” Just because the Left were wrong on the minor issue of the Euro doesn’t mean they aren’t right on 99% of everything else. Of course not. Who would have thought it?
But the sourness of defeat is in the air. Somebody moved their cheese. The phrase comes from a a 1998 motivational book of a similar title. It refers to stuff that was once there but now ain’t. According to the book mice should internalize the following lessons:
- Change Happens — They Keep Moving The Cheese
- Anticipate Change — Get Ready For The Cheese To Move
- Monitor Change — Smell The Cheese Often So You Know When It Is Getting Old
- Adapt To Change Quickly — The Quicker You Let Go Of Old Cheese, The Sooner You Can Enjoy New Cheese
- Change — Move With The Cheese
- Enjoy Change! — Savor The Adventure And Enjoy The Taste Of New Cheese!
- Be Ready To Change Quickly And Enjoy It Again. They Keep Moving The Cheese.
Who moved the cheese? The Republicans? Hardly. They are far too incompetent for that. The probable answer is that technological change, cultural diffusion and market forces were behind the switch. That is why Central Planning does so poorly. Things never work out quite the way they are planned.
