The Daily Mail describes a California lesbian couple who’ve persuaded their 8 year adoptive son to begin a sex change process because they feel he is really — and will be happier as — a girl.
A boy who started the process of changing sex at age eight has told how he always knew he was meant to be a girl.
Thomas Lobel, who now calls himself Tammy, is undergoing controversial hormone blocking treatment in Berkeley, California to stop him going through puberty as a boy.
His two lesbian mothers, who adopted him aged two, say that they have been criticized by friends and family, but insist they have not forced their son to become a girl.
They say that one of the first things he told them when he learnt sign language aged three, learned because of a speech impediment, was, ‘I am a girl’.
Tammy, now 11, wears dresses and effectively lives as a girl.
Whoever said the Age of Miracles is over is sadly mistaken. We live in a world where it is possible to borrow your way out of debt; produce trillions of dollars out of thin air; where it is but the work of a few treaties to start the sea levels falling by trading little pieces of paper on a carbon exchange; and where blond, blue eyed people can call themselves black. So why should it be remarkable when 8 years old boys start a sex change process to turn into girls?
The saga of Tammy is not about sexual preference, lesbianism or homosexuality. It is about our Gaia-given right to get anything we want, any damned thing at all. It is about establishing that everyone has a right to an Ipod, affordable housing, a world without nuclear weapons, solar panels which cost three times as much as their competitors yet which should somehow be competitive. It is about our right to live in a world where the BATF can give away guns to Mexican drug dealers, the better to prove that the Second Amendment is evil because it is part of a Constitution that is at least a hundred years old and which no one understands any more; to a universe where things are so because we want them that way without any reference to economics, physics, chemistry, history or bothering to ask anyone.
Everyone knows that that we have to do is ask real, real hard and our wishes will be granted. That if enough Greeks demonstrate in the street then nobody has to pay back anything in the Eurozone, and if the Greeks run out of money we will just lend them some more. This is called Hope. And the result of this process will be Change. Its beautiful, beautiful.
Some would disagree, driven the quaint and now outdated idea that reality may have a vote in the way things turn out. Such skeptics are driven by the fear that instead of the wonderful tomorrow anticipated from all these wishings that we shall instead get what was once called our Just Deserts: bankruptcy, monstrosities, disillusion and madness. Fortunately these skeptics are few. Soon, there will be none at all.
“For the wages of sin is death …” — quick count that in the employment figures! — and make sure you deduct the health care premiums from the wages.

A long term commenter wrote to argue there was another part of the narrative which deserved equal attention. He knows someone who has been messed up by parents who figured they could “fix him” by sending him to a Christian school. That didn’t work and if anything, messed him up some more. Why did that story not make it into my discussion? The simple answer is that posts start from a point, but they cannot cover all points.
My comments in the post below about “black boxes” never formed but a part of the thread. But the point of them was the argument that society needed to have black boxes — privacy space in which we didn’t know what happened — that this was a strong element to a free society.
Privacy literally means ignorance in this case. It means not knowing. Because once things are put in the public space they inevitably force people to take positions. Everyone who has negotiated an outcome or attended a dinner party knows this. Neither negotiations nor dinner parties can proceed unless everyone knows what not to talk about.
Some would call this a form of hypocrisy, yet it is a form of memetic triage. Truces are about leaving cases which have not yet ripened outside of the operating room. Truces are being negotiated and broken down all the time. The trick is to know which hold and which are invalid. I think that privacy is a mechanism for kicking the right things down the road. Maybe we’ll get to them, maybe not. But not yet, not yet.
Things that become uncontainable in private space jump into the public arena. They break the truce. You can argue that when something becomes a big enough then it shoulders its way to the fore. In the case of this lesbian couple, the issues probably became big enough to talk about. Now it is outside the truce village and we will see what we will see.
That should not obscure the fact that other things remain in the black boxes of privacy — and ought to — at least until they produce something which breaks the truce. There may be many other lesbian homes in which the issues are not big enough, or things run well and happily enough for us to say, it is none of our business. The idea of ‘limited government’ must have at its heart the idea that the state should intervene only when there is a clear and pressing reason to do so.

Let me see if I’ve got this straight. The young boy likes to act and dress like a girl. Ok. Growing up in a Lesbian household one might suspect a bit of nurture vs. nature here (if not overt mind washing), but let it slide for now.
So in order to see if he really wants to be a girl, they will stop him from becoming an adolescent boy. So he can’t actually experience the changes that would likely make him far more masculine and change his predilection for female traits. I suspect it’s more than a bit of wish fulfillment on the part of the two mommies.
And they have the right to do this to him how?

We are at the stage where certain impulses, including those we haven’t thought of yet, should be so self-evidently correct that to question them would be an act of bigotry. So I’m wondering what’s wrong with me.
We are looking at this all wrong. Those two California ladies aren’t deviants. The rest of us are. And if we are not yet certifiable then we soon will be. Count on it.

This case is an outrage and a clear case of child abuse, and should be prosecuted as such
–the adoptive parents should lose custody and any MDs involved should lose their license.
The boy should be left alone, when he is 18+ he can make his own decision.
Until then he needs to be protected from this cruel act of narcissism by his adoptive parents.
If we were talking about a white heterosexual family social services would be all over them like a cheap suit “protecting” the child.

There is no shortage of people who are ready to tell you what to do. There are legions of people who will tell you where to throw your trash. How far you are allowed to fly on your carbon footprint. What foods you may ethically or unethically eat. There is an entire body of knowledge devoted to what you may licitly think; legally write or allowably say. These are called Hate Speech codes. And sooner or later they will be enforceable by fines and jail terms.
There are now classes of people you may not criticize. There are documents you may not seek. There are questions you may not ask. There are answers you must not give. Someone once said, “you can’t handle the truth.” Why of course we can old bean, just wait until we put on the right set of gloves.
And now I know for a certainty that if anyone should raise the slightest objection to what these two women have encouraged in their son that they should be set upon and branded as bigots. And do you know what? The label will stick to the critics. There will be no shortage of celebrities, university professors and talk show hosts ready to point the finger at whoever dares to cast aspersions on these two loving parents. Crazy you say? What’s that got to do with it?
Nothing you can utter, no evidence you can adduce, no logical argument you can make can change this. It is so. The only thing left is really to bow as graciously as possible to to the glittering assemblage and say, “well be my guest”. Do what you want. Print what you like. Believe as you wish. Please discover for yourself just what lies down that fine road you’ve embarked upon.

The word “privilege” derives from two words meaning “private law”. All along, the left has given lip service to the concept of removing privilege, but in reality they weren’t interested in removing, it, just taking it for themselves.

I suspect, though, that I have more experience with transsexuals than that lesbian couple. A friend (the brother of my best friend) of mine who grew up a block from me in small-town MN suddenly came out as a transsexual in the 90s. This was a bit of a surprise to everybody who knew him, given that he had a wife and kids and nobody had heard him complain about being a man before (an aside…some men are just NOT good candidates to become women…he/she was the ugliest woman I ever knew, bar none).
I found his wife’s reaction odd…she was very supportive. I never really knew her, but it was hard for me to picture her taking a thing like that in stride. But there it is. I’d like to say that s/he lived happily ever after…but instead in about 2003 he took a couple of bottles of pills and slept the Big Sleep. A few short years after his father decided to take a nap in his car in the garage after neglecting to stop the engine.
This friend’s episode, though, suggests to me that rather than being a healthy decision, deciding to change gender is simply a very visible manifestation of some larger problem under the surface.
So what’s the over/under on how long it will be before a case pops up somewhere in the US (and most likely in CA) where things get so convoluted that someone ends up being forced by the state to get a sex change? When something like that happens, we’ll know it’s time to start cleaning the guns and organizing the ammo.
A few years back there was a book about an actual incident where a very young boy who involuntarily became a little girl.
It was the result of – steel yourself, men – a botched circumcism operation where they took off a bit too much. Then, after consulting with his parents decided that they had screwed up so bad they would just turn the failed original operation into a sex change.
So the kid was raised as a girl, until somewhere around 16 years old he decided “I am no such thing!” For some inexplicable reason he then did not go looking for the original doctor with a shotgun, which would also have made a better book. And I have no idea how he could recover at that point other than maybe a subscription to Playboy.
Dr Laura’s radio show used to often start with a segment on Defining Deviancy Down. One example given was where some psychologist was saying that sexual relations between a child and an adult was actually good for the kid. Sounds like another way to improve the sales of shotguns.
Haven’t we all been taught that we can be anything we want to be? Isn’t that the American dream?

The state is only sanctioning and protecting child abusers, as the state has always done. We just have the technological means nowadays to go to the upmost extreme in denying the reality.
Sometimes I think there are really three genders; there are masculine people, there are feminine people, and then there are those who have no need for sexual relations. But the human race can’t go on if people pretend that opposites don’t attract, which is the agenda pushed by homosexuals seeking to cover up child sexual abuse and the distortion of the sec hormones.
Look at the Chaz Bono controversy. If her parents weren’t rich, she wouldn’t have had the means to do that to herself. Cher points fingers at the haters through her twitter when she really should be examining her conscience as a parent, asking, where was I when this little girl was growing up? While I was strutting around half naked and reveling the adulation of the public, who was changing my baby’s diapers? Who was bathing my little girl?

Now, now Ag Plumber, you’re expressing a distinctly politically incorrect thought that many of us have been told to suppress for decades. To be even more politically incorrect, I have long suspected that many homosexuals are also gay because of some “manifestation of some larger problem under the surface”. Many but not all.
At least now, I will have something new to talk about when accosted by those Lesbians pushing a gay rights petition at the local market. These women ‘parents” have crossed such a unspeakably horrific line to where it is now imperative to speak out against gay adoption.
Look. Everyone with a brain knew you can’t make homos adoptive parents. It’s all about them, and, like any mental disorder, they don’t think they’re wrong, because they don’t have properly functioning brains. It’s never their sexual proclivities, it’s that they wish to force them upon one and all. They insist on it, much like rubbing a bad dog’s nose in it. Trusting them with a child is stupid.
If they are not brought into court over this, for child abuse, say goodbye to pedophilia. If this is fine, why would that not be? Is the benchmark that, as long as I can convince the child that it’s OK, then it’s fine? Because that’s what this entails.
Parents make children behave. They guide them in their formation. This is why queers can’t be parents. It’s never about the children, it’s all about them. It’s a mental disease.
Now do we all see why gay marriage is an oxymoron? Marriage is about families. Functioning families are not supposed to prey on their own. What would one call this, if not preying? It does no good to point out that normal families have this problem. If the law notices it, the parents are punished. I’m not holding my breath, here. They have become a protected class, which means they are the preferred lifestyle to us mere heterosexuals. Noone is going to be punished.
This country, and its people, suck. They have to stop being stupid. Right now.
I never understood the word ‘arrogance’ until now. At first I thought it was a kind of egotism, but now realize is really an extreme kind of stupidity. How could people seriously contemplate thumbing their noses at reality without reckoning the consequences?

When a system has a large design margin the feedback loop between policy action and consequence is often disabled or suppressed. In such a system clowns can get promoted to the top simply because they have nice haircuts. In such a system, ideologies can become fads simply because they are promoted by good publicists. Morons are raised to the top and agendas which are little more than lunacies take universal, unthinking hold.
Now after 20 years of this perverse HR policy, perhaps things have reached the point where top is literally stuffed with idiots; that there are now more capable men in a Mangyan tribal council than there is in a place like EU. Literally. That there is more common sense in a given infantry platoon in Afghanistan than in the higher reaches of the Beltway.
But they don’t realize it. They think they are master of all they survey. It is this self-loving stupidity that constitutes arrogance. Napoleon wasn’t arrogant. He had talent. But these guys …
The thing is that they believe their press. They are truly convinced the world can’t live without them. In fact, the world would benefit greatly from their retirement. But what is truly frightening is the knowledge that reality will square the account, even if our genius cultural leaders don’t think it will. Payback is inevitable and the check is in the mail. God help us when it gets delivered. Gaia won’t.
You cannot pursue a policy of folly indefinitely and expect to escape unscathed.

We pass a Defense of Marriage Act by Act of Congress and yet every end-around to the law is undertaken to undermine it. None of them have worked, referenda in 37, or was that 57 states (?) saw the voter reject it. Some lowly court will rule against the Act of congress, and guess what, the “rights” of polygamists is right round the corner. I was invited to attend a “same-sex marriage” twenty seven years ago, it was a gathering of friends and family and it was officiated by some otherwise holy man or J of P. So tell me, what is it they cannot or are forbidden to do now that they haven’t been doing all along? The above blog post provides but one of the answers. And somewhere in all that is taxpayer compelled subsidy of it, especially in the case of so-called ‘government workers’. It’s in their Union contract. Obviously the child is not theirs. To be a male ones HAS to have a “Y” chromosome. There are no “feelings” involved. No wishes, hopes or even dreams. Females Have 2 “X” chromosomes. Males have an X & a Y. That is a fact. No getting around it. When chromosome packages are exchanged the new child gets either an X or a Y from the father. Most of the time. There is the occasional XXY. I think it’s possible to have an XXX also. but most of the time it’s X & Y. So someplace this child has a father. The Stork actually doesn’t bring babies.
The child needs to be taken from those acting as his parents.
If you wonder what these women are preaching in their home, you got to see what they are teaching in the schools. Maleness is punishable in many ways now but so far, not by making them a eunuch.
There is a case I saw on TV where a guy in Canada was similarly diagnosed by some doctor who was known for such diagnosis, he, after the fact, after his doctor and his family reassigned him, went to a surgeon on his own while a teenager and had his penis refashioned out of whatever it is they make penises out of nowadays. Needles to say, he was not the least bit pleased with the actions of these adults and won a very large settlement that still paled in comparison to having his penis cut off. Ya know, it ought to be obvious that such a thing, as politically fashionable as it is, should be decided at the age of adulthood by the individual so affected. Anything else is perverse child abuse. Oh, I suppose I’ll hear from the “but some people are born with uncertain genders” crowd, but, medically, it can be handled in due time. The one in a million cases don’t have to set a standard for the other nine hundred thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine cases but they sure are what on the minds of progressives out to level the playing field by hobbling the majority with arcane what if scenarios.

It IS a simple fact, and occurs in the business world as well, though perhaps to a lesser degree than politics.
I am in a unique professional situation right now. I was a software developer/programmer/programmer-analyst/software engineer/whatever-but-they-all-mean-the-same-thing for 18 years. I burned out. I went temporarily insane, got my class A license and first drove big rigs over the road and then a school bus for a year or so to try to refresh. I was pretty sure I had succeeded, so I went looking to get back into software. Purely by accident, I came across an open position for a “tele-Developer Evangelist”. It was just a quirky enough title that I took a flier on it and sent in my resume.
Now I know W and others here either currently do similar work to mine or have before. But evangelizing is a different critter. I’m not even sure whether I like it or not yet, and I’ve been doing it for about 4 months. Essentially, what I do for a living is sit and yap on the phone about technology, and particularly that of my employer who I probably shouldn’t name outright but every person in the developed world has used their stuff at one point or another…leave it at that. Anyway, it’s pretty cool because I get to have about $100,000 worth of the latest-and-greatest versions of development software, databases and stuff installed on my work box and am encouraged to play with it as often as I have the time. Fun stuff.
I also get to talk to a LOT of CEOs and CTOs/CIOs, and other executive types. Some of these are top captains of well-known companies in the US. Some are brilliant and a lot of fun to rap with. And, alas, some very obviously got their jobs because daddy owned the company or something.
Now I’m a geek. I’m at least something of a trekkie, I love Tolkien’s work, I played D&D and carried my dice around with me just in case in high school. I was and probably still am a social misfit. Luckily, so seem to be the most qualified CTOs out there, though the best ones are certainly better-adjusted than me. On a conference call recently on the spur of the moment I told a joke I had recently seen on facebook regarding CERN’s recent apparent discovery that some neutrinos apparently can travel faster than light:

Yes, of COURSE it’s lame and geeky. That was the POINT. It was my first 1-on-1 discussion with a guy that was supposed to be a tech guy, and any tech guy worth his salt would at least get a mild chuckle on hearing that for the first time, and something like that might even imply to him that I’m a technically engaged, broad-researching guy who may know some stuff that he would find valuable. This guy greeted it with stone-cold silence. Of the 5 times I’ve used it in discussions, he was the only one that didn’t appreciate it. I thought I might be up on murder charges with two other CTOs who had trouble breathing they were laughing so hard (both of whom later struck me as really good at what they do).
So we got on to the real discussion. This man runs a shop with hundreds of developers, testers, service technicians and the rest. He’s supposed to be the leading, bleeding edge. The dude is supposed to be a tech rainmaker, a guy others go to for strategic advice.
I wouldn’t go to him to ask where the nearest bathroom is, because he probably doesn’t know. I’m sure the guy pulls down a six figure salary several times over…but damned if I know why. I can only figure nepotism, but I don’t know that. Maybe he caught the CEO cheating on his wife or something. But it sure isn’t leadership or technical smarts.
Where are the “no-circ” types on this? If they object to a little snipping, you’d think they’d really object to lopping the whole package off. (Which are what these two man-hating women are doing, even if they are doing it through chemistry.)
And why are lesbians adopting little boys anyhow, if not to emasculate them?
I would beg to differ or rather split hairs over whether it is so much arrogance as conceit. Conceit is thinking you know something about everything, when you know nothing about anything- you just know how to sound ‘right’ by use of Sophistry and the suckers line up for it. The man of conceit knows that what he does or says is wrong, his only concern is that his will or the will he has subscribed to is the one imposed on others. People have misgivings about “gay marriages” and homosexuals call them bigots. Then without sensing the slightest irony turn around and do something like this. All progressive issues start with the camel getting its nose into the tent. That is why there are no trivial issues with these jerks.

I must’ve eaten a bit too much for dinner – I’m feeling a bit of nausea that coincidentally started as I read this article (though obviously, living in a PC world, nothing about the article itself could possibly have brought on the nausea).
I agree with JWarrior that the usually very calm Wretchard seems to be very close to frothing mad. I can’t imagine why, or at least if I could imagine why, I wouldn’t admit it – or I might end up like Andrew Bolt and have the PC police breathing down my neck.

In order for individuals to have the slightest chance of living out their lives relatively free of conflict they have to inhabit a society with lots of black boxes. There ought to be places into which we cannot peer because the knowledge of what goes on inside the black boxes would throw the fatal apple of discord into the larger society. All that ought to be visible to people in other black boxes in the normal course of events is what is revealed in the agreed interface.
You have your app, and I have mine. What goes on inside of your app is for you to know. The same for me. But when we exchange data it ought to be in an agreed format with predictable results.
Perhaps a lot of the problems that we have today arise from the break down of this system; from the compulsion to get into somebody else’s black box. There seems to be some insatiable need on the part of activists to preach, to leave no part of you unprosletyzed. Just the other day a Lebanese Christian friend of mine remarked that his friend’s son (who had failed high school) had been paid $4,000 to convert to Islam. Apparently the going rate for convincing Arab girls to wear the hijab in Sydney is $250 a month. Now if you think this is harmless, just imagine what would happen if the Lebanese Christians got together to pay Muslim boys $5,000 to convert to Christianity and Muslim girls $500 to wear a miniskirt. Then look out below. Not only would that be “hurtful”, “wrong” and “insensitive”, it would probably cause blood to flow.
We can’t seem to keep our hands out of other people’s black boxes. The schools are particularly egregious in this regard. Some of them seem unnaturally eager to tell families how they should lead their lives. Eat this food, celebrate this ideology, take this attitude in contrast to your fuddy-duddy parents, contribute to this cause. What is “acceptable”, who is black. Presumably nobody is competent to figure this out for himself any more. Preach, preach preach. Nobody can seem to stick to the business of teaching literacy and mathematics any more.
This is the age in which everybody has the right to tell anyone else what to do. What bulbs you can buy; what you can put in the trash; when you can run your air conditioner; and whether or not you can read the Bible in your living room. Ironically this intrusiveness is promoted in the name of understanding, “sharing” and community togetherness. There seems in principle to be no black box that can claim sanctuary. If you try and preserve the privacy of its contents, the accusation comes quickly: what are you hiding?
You might respond: why is it your business? Once this worked. Today there is ready answer. We are the state. Everything is our business. But this is a mistake, and it will lead to conflict.
The reason that liberty must be based to some extent on the sanctity of the individual is simply because of the imperative to keep those black boxes operating. It is the questions we don’t have to answer that are the mark of liberty. I personally believe that you can’t design a system without black boxes. But others disagree.
In opposition to the idea of black boxes communicating in the public space through interfaces is the idea of a universal, monolithic standard. This is the socialist idea. We’re all going to run the same thing. The state and the dominant ideology will specify the universal architecture and that is going to pervade everything. In that kind of world the only people who hang on to their black boxes are the bitter clingers. Everybody else gets with the program.
I would compare this architecture to that of the Tower of Babel, were it not so hurtful to make the connection. So let me just call it something more contemporary: Too Big To Fail. Now homosexuals should listen up. I would make the counter-intuitive argument that homosexuals, eccentrics and genuine loners are better off in a world of black boxes than they are in the so-called accepting world of the universal standard. They are better off in a world without questions rather than in one where they are encouraged to “come out”.
The more doors the universal standardizers kick down, the worse off everyone — and I mean everyone — will be. In the end the Big Tent will be a space without freedom and without money too. We all of us need a exclusive, secret place to commune with whatever God we believe in. Without that, there will be no relief from friction, no escape from the unwanted code review. No time to live and no time to work.

I really don’t understand. What 8 year old child is allowed to make ANY kind of decision regarding a medical procedure? Would you ask his opinion regarding a tonsillectomy? No. So the decision is being made by the “parents”. Why are parents allowed to make a decision regarding sexual orientation before the child has gone through puberty? Surely if the “parents” took their son to a surgeon and asked him to amputate a leg because their son thought of himself as one-legged, the surgeon would refuse. And if he did not, how would the state view his decision to go through with the procedure? No, this makes no sense at all. If the kid decides when he’s 18 that he wants to undergo a sex-change procedure, that’s a different issue. I transported him to LAGH ( Los Angeles General Hospital) in East L.A. and booked him. I explained the situation to the admitting doctor and asked that he be treated before he was released. They told me he would be given that choice.
…Even back then, L.A. Counnty was paying for sex changes for prisoners who requested it. We are not made of money. Who gets the treatment is an important decision. This poor childs mutilation and perversion will cost somebody, somewhere, treatment they need. As a diabetic now, I understand much more than I did then. I hope the guy got his broken ankles set and healed, but, I doubt he did.

Now this boy should be his own black box. Once upon a time that was axiomatic. There was a time when the individual was recognized as the building block of society, the atom of the human kind. We put a taboo sign around the individual, marked with such mystical signs as “sacred” and “unalienable”. Today we customize the individual even before he or she is out of the womb. We choose the gender of the child and whether he or she gets to live or die, even after birth. Those choices are someone else’s “right”. An absolute right, to be paid for by the State. No longer are rights a protection from interference. Today they are licenses to entitlement.
In our modern age we have the right to affordable housing, to public education, to Obamacare, even to an Ipod. But what child has a “right” to be left alone? From an abortionist’s knife in the first instance, but even later, not even to choose his gender, but simply to keep whatever gender he started out with?
Heck, why should we wish that? That’s a primitive “negative right”, the right to be left alone, not the bright shining light of a positive guidance that ought to course through our ecstatic society. Where’s the Hope you ask? Well there there is none of that. But of Change, Change … well what will it be: male, female or hermaphrodite?
I think the biggest intellectual swindle the Left ever pulled was to convince us — as an article of faith — that we were nothing but a handful of DNA. A pile of snot. In accepting this we gave away the store. We disarmed ourselves. Yet we were conned into thinking that we could simultaneously celebrate ourselves and despise our human roots in the bargain. Few had the wit to see that if you granted the one, you denied the other.
But we were sold the idea of our incidental existence anyway, and they did it in so clever a fashion that we almost don’t realize that we’ve signed away our last claim to transcendence. We’ve given them the key to our black box. And to that boy’s too. For on what basis now do we ask that he be left alone? On the argument that snot has rights? It is a little late now. For what we have given away we will almost deserve what we’re about to get.

I haven’t seen you this introspective in some time – rather appropriate for the day.
Take heart – we will survive and thrive.
Actions have consequences. To be competent to make decisions and accept the consequences makes you an adult. By definition children are not responsible. Once upon a time there was a bright line between childhood and adulthood. When that line was drawn varied from society to society. Three thousand years ago when a boy was old enough to watch the sheep alone and guard the flock from wolves he was considered a man and admitted to join the tribe at council, where he was expected to shut up even if formally permitted to talk, and participate in prayer. That usually happened around age 13 and is the basis for the Jewish ritual of Bar Mitzvah, “Today I am 13. Today I am a man.”
Men did not act like children. Children did not act like men. Children could speak and act with relative impunity. They were safe, although they were taught the limits as in “Beating the bounds.” Less than a hundred years ago boys of 14 wore knee pants and men of 16 wore suits. There was no adolescence as a cossetted and special in between time. The break came after WW-II when first women and then men sought to reclaim childhood. Partly this may have been caused by the universality of secondary and post secondary education that resulted in millions who would have been shouldering adult responsibilities now spending ten or more years in extended isolation from reality. That sense of childlike protection was increased by the system of military draft exemptions for students.
We have come full circle. Now transexuals are demanding their “right” to enter the military. Those who reassure everyone that the plots of the Socialists will be thwarted by the stalwart wall of the police and military joined by the militia in some apocalypse are wrong on every level. First because the American people will both respect those who bare arms lawfully but will also reject so called militia advocates as more dangerous than urban gangsters. The experience of the 1990s as portrayed in the media, regardless of the facts, provides a foundation for this.
Second because the assumption that the armed forces are natural allies of the conservatives is unproven and may be false. Within its own world the military is in fact a functioning socialist society sustained by a strong belief in a common purpose that justifies sacrifice and a culture that drives leaders to exercise watchful care for their charges to a far greater degree than is found in any civilian community outside of the purest communist utopias such as the original kibbutz.
Finally the Left have spent over two generations working to undermine the military culture. While they still perform superbly in combat those changes have not been without affect both in the ranks and in the leadership. Even if the cinematic clash between Right and Left subsequent to a collapse were to occur our elites probably would have much less to fear from the military than they did when “Seven Days In May” was filmed.

I applied for a job in California from an out-of-state location. The HR people agreed to a Skype-facilitated interview, audio and video, which I thought I could manage given some coordination with their IT people. I grew up believing it was always better to know than not to know. Maybe that was wrong. Perhaps actionable knowledge comes in quanta. While it may always be “better to know” an OODA complete block of knowledge, you can argue that person is worse off knowing enough to be aware of problem, but not possessed of enough knowledge to solve or even ameliorate it. Thus, we may be better off not knowing when we will die if we cannot also know how to use that knowledge to prepare for the end or make provision for it. Partial knowledge has the property of forcing emergent reactions but if the knowledge is truly incomplete the reactions it provokes will be wrong or highly suboptimal ones.
This leads back to privacy. When is it better not to know? When is better to leave people inside black boxes? The case for privacy rests in that if we cannot know enough, we are better not inquiring into the matter at all. If the partial knowledge we obtain by invading privacy is insufficient to provide a “fix”, then nothing is gained thereby. Thus, as a general rule, such problems should be left to subsidiary resolution unless they blow out of the black box and challenge the system.
The system, once forced to breach privacy, must acquire the rest of the relevant information, at whatever cost. The classic case is criminal prosecution. The moment the state takes it upon itself to enter what used to be a private situation, they are obligated to “know enough” to convict or acquit and not just to “know a little”.
That is how I now think knowledge should be treated. Too little knowledge in some situations is dangerous. And to avoid that palpable risk, we should not inquire into situations that we cannot practically resolve.

When 27 years old or so I read the Satyricon by Petronius, translated from the original Latin. It is a satire describing the psycho-sexual decadence of the ancient Roman empire at the height of its power. Serious funny post. Seriously, one of those subject where I linger not knowing whether to laugh or cry at the human condition.
To get to the serious part – or as far as my amateur armchair status will permit – sexual perversion, manifest to the level that leads to criminal behavior (as well as the new definitions of criminal behavior described in this post – and I happen to agree with Teresita that the subject behavior is an outlier data point, not a trend line) is expressed in bi-sexual modes as well. The most obvious examples being human trafficking and the “acceptance” of rape in too many African societies. The hatred may not be as overt as that expressed in more intimate gatherings, but neither is it a trivial or inconsequential part of the motivational drivers behind the behavior. Men who hate women prefer to express their hatred in sexually deviant and demeaning behaviors. The sex-based criminal demographic includes same-sex offenders (although some legal codes retain antiquated definitions, ala NY, IIRC, where definitional reforms are under consideration.)
The short point being – it is possible, necessary, to allow for the existence of sexually-motivated criminal behavior, while allowing for the reality of same sex couples who keep their private lives private and their public lives in line with the dictates of The Commons or General Welfare.
