  1. Is it me, or were FDR/Churchill/Stalin laughing when Brown made that mistake? (Must’ve been some advanced camera tech back then, enabling people to laugh at something that happens in the future…)

    Here’s Ronald Reagan’s Point Du Hoc Speech on D-Day 6 June 1984

  3. 3. Charles

    Here’s FDR’s D-Day speech.

  4. 4. DeadButMorallySuperior

Frankly, it’s a trivial gaffe. Easy enough to sense that “Omaha” and “Obama” were only words away from each other on the script.

Alas, this mistake will probably be the only memorable moment of an otherwise forgettable speech.

  5. 5. PA Cat

Gordon Brown must have been channeling Joe Biden.

  6. Dr Johnson said that the prospect of being hanged concentrates the mind. Gordon Brown provides what might be evidence to the contrary or proof that the effects of the shock of decapitation unravel the senses. Brown is now effectively a Dead Man Walking. He stumbles around on stage while the other actors look at each other and the Stage Manager hisses “Get him off.” Can the Queen call him in for a chat and ask if his government has the people’s confidence? Can a vote be forced on some otherwise inconsequential issue?

  7. 7. Ridolph

Stupid, meaningless mistake that anyone could have made. Happy he’s going down, but this is nothing.

  8. 8. Walt

To those who think ‘twas but a gaffe
I bid you think again, sir
Brown did not do it for a laugh
He did it for the men, sir
Who came ashore that fateful morn
    And stumbled up the shingle
And raced across the bullet torn
    Cruel beach, their nerves a-tingle
With just one thought upon their minds
    To do this for Obama
A man they knew had future binds
    To cure the country’s trauma
    Of self-inflicted anomie
    Beset with doubt and worry
    So with a smart economy
They ran as in a hurry
To hasten and prepare the way
For the one blessed by the gods
Who’d take the reins on one fair day
    Despite tremendous odds
And lead us all to heaven’s gate
The land of milk and honey
Of course we’ll have a while to wait
‘Cause he’s spent all of our money

  9. Don’t give the Democrats any ideas. They may start naming things after Obama. Wouldn’t put it past them to try and change Mount Rushmore to Mount Obama.

Gordon Brown is at the center of a kind of political reality show in Britain. Whether the show is a farce or a tragedy has yet to be determined. His cabinet has practically deserted him; his people are knifing each other; his party was decimated at the elections; the scandals associated with him has caused Parliament to end its centuries old practice of regulating itself. But he still hangs on.

The name of the beach gaffe will be understood by his critics as yet another instance of Gordon ‘losing it’. Of course it is nothing in itself.

  11. 11. bob

Has caused Parliament to end its centuries old practice of regulating itself?

Can we transplant this idea to D.C.?

  12. 12. davidt

Luckily he didn’t say, “Obama bitch.”

  13. 13. twobyfour

    davidt/12

That would’ve been truly a freudian slip.

  14. 14. Beverly

Someone on The Scotsman likened Brown to a wounded bull in the ring, his aorta pierced by the toreador, but still standing stubbornly, his mouth clamped shut to hold in the blood.

    Wow.

Is Prime Minister’s Question Time on Cspan Sunday night? might be worth a tune-in. Should be a real donnybrook.

  15. 15. ledger

    Gordon Brown:

“There were heavy causalities on Obama Beach.”

“Many were infected with the disease Obola.”

“I got some DVD’s to prove it. But, I can’t seem get them work.”

  16. 16. Talnik

Well at least he didn’t say Osama .

  17. 17. Derek

Anyone who has written or reported learns quickly that names matter, and mistakes come from carelessness. Brown was careless. The day wasn’t about him, which is a novel thought for a politician.

Maybe he was sympathizing with the german defenders seeing wave upon wave of attackers.

    Derek

  18. 18. Michael

A simple mistake. Funny but meaningless.

What would have really impressed me would have been if the announcement was “Please do not move until the Veterans have left the field” rather than “Please do not move until the dignitaries have left the field”.

  19. 19. JoeHill

“Alas, this mistake will probably be the only memorable moment of an otherwise forgettable speech.”

Actually probably the only memorable moment of a totally failed government. In a better day Her Majesty’s Prime Minister would have paid with his head for the corruption and malfeasance Gordan Brown has demonstrated. Talk about the Peter Principle in action if GB hasn’t risen to his level of incompetence who has?

  20. 20. NahnCee

Isn’t the question in England the same as it is in America? Namely, if this particular politician can’t do the job and the voters want to off his head, who is there out there who *can* stand up and get the ship of state straightened out in a way that Churchill, FDR, Truman and/or Ike would approve of?
