Who’s Allah?

March 28, 2009 - 11:26 pm - by Richard Fernandez

According to Wikipedia, “Our Lady of Guadalupe (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) is a celebrated 16th-century icon of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. The image, also known as the Virgin of Guadalupe (Spanish: Virgen de Guadalupe) represents a famous Marian apparition. According to the traditional account, the image appeared miraculously on the back of a simple peasant cloak. It is perhaps Mexico’s most popular religious and cultural image, and the focus of an extensive pilgrimage. The feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe is December 12. She is said to have appeared to Saint Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City between December 9 and December 12, 1531. The Virgin of Guadalupe is a symbol of significant importance to Mexican Catholics. The Virgin Mary in this aspect has been given the title: “Patroness of the Americas”, and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City is the second most visited Catholic shrine in the world.”

One of the latest visitors is Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who shown the miraculous cloak, said something so awkward that Tigerhawk claims “that it is difficult to believe that it was not a Republican who committed it. Difficult, that is, if you’re a reporter for a mainstream media organization.” The Catholic News Service describes what happened on the occasion of Hillary’s visit to the Guadalupe Shrine:

Msgr. Monroy took Mrs. Clinton to the famous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which had been previously lowered from its usual altar for the occasion.

After observing it for a while, Mrs. Clinton asked “who painted it?” to which Msgr. Monroy responded “God!”

Clinton then told Msgr. Monroy that she had previously visited the old Basilica in 1979, when the new one was still under construction.

After placing a bouquet of white flowers by the image, Mrs. Clinton went to the quemador –the open air area at the Basilica where the faithful light candles- and lit a green candle. Leaving the basilica half an hour later, Mrs. Clinton told some of the Mexicans gathered outside to greet her, “you have a marvelous virgin!”

In case that didn’t go over very well, Hillary can always hit the Peregruzka button.

Thought I’d re-up on this as it was posted in a (quickly obviated)thread…

Anybody notice Condi’s respectful line on the new admin – and her implicit rebuke of Dick C.? Just asking… – how easy is it for ya’ll to dismiss her affirmation that O’s crew are “quality people” and patriots who might just have a clue…And what about Gates on Obama’s head vs. Bush’s? Was he just sucking up? So you got Condi and Gates saying O and co. aren’t fools. But so many of you are SURE they’re either idiots or traitors. Hmmm…Time for second thoughts?

  2. 2. bob

What will Hillary say if she is shown The Shroud of Turin?

  3. 3. Walt

At the Shrine of Guadalupe now
Our Sec of State let out as how
The Virgin’s image was so nicely painted
When told that God had worked the brush
She had the grace to primly blush
Then saw the painter’s name and promptly fainted
It makes you wonder what she’ll do
When faced with other people who
Believe in God and other things she smirks at
She doesn’t seem to have much sense
Of how her act has consequence
For country and department that she works at
Her problem is she thinks that she’s
The smartest slice of sharper cheese
That ever came a sliding off the slicer
I think we should replace her now
    Oprah come take a bow
She’s not as dumb and surely she’d be nicer

Well if they are not idiots, then giving Brown DVDs that don’t play in the UK, giving the Russian minister a red button that doesn’t say “reset” and not knowing the Guadalupe image is supposed to be miraculous are then deliberate, conscious, premeditated insults.

I’d rather believe these people are idiots.

By the way, idiocy and treason are two different charges.

  5. 5. vb

    Benj,
They may not be idiots, but some, including BO, sure were ignorant. Why else would Obama forget what he said on the campaign trail, keep Bush’s top people like Gates and Petaeus, and merely tweek many of Bush’s policies.

  6. 6. dave r

In Hill’s defense, she’s a secularist, and these religious things don’t really come within her purview. Several non-performers in the DOS need to be fired; there’s no way she shouldn’t have been background briefed about the significance and history of the image.

Bob Sykes has nailed it; this must have been a calculated insult.

  7. 7. E. Nigma

Never attribute to malice and anger what can simply be attributed to ignorance and stupidity. Even if it is “the smartest woman in the world.” Pay attention to the narrative. If Sarah Palin has said such things in public, the cable network howlers would be guffawing for days on end. Hillary! is supposed to have a staff that briefs her on these things, isn’t she?

So Condoleeza Rice was trying to be polite to the incoming administration, and give them the benefit of the doubt. She’s a career diplomat, what did you think she would say? “You’re all a bunch of morons! Get a clue!”

And Gates has bigger fish to fry than comparing how big Obama’s brain is next to Bush’s brain. Did you expect him to say “Barack Obama is grotesquely misinformed about defense policy.”
He’s trying to bring some coherence to Defense policy with the new State Dept., before he too executes his “exit strategy”.

  8. 8. rrpjr

Actually Benji I’m now even more convinced they’re fools and traitors. You see I’ve come to embrace the phenomenon of cultural para-stimuli, a theory of conformed behavior first put forth by Nobel Laureate Victor Ransome Starling, but described most pithily and in context (“peer pressure on steroids”) by novelist Andrew Klavan in his excellent essay on Big Hollywood

    http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/aklavan/2009/01/14/why-we-fight/

Condi Rice has long since lost the ability to make moral judgments about people within her “club” of peers.

  9. 9. betsybounds

Condoleeza Rice is not a career diplomat. She’s a career academic who was seduced by the career diplomats at State during her tenure, when she started representing Saudi Arabia and others to the United States government. I’m not sure what the heck Gates is trying to do.

Hanlon’s Razor (Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity–variously attributed to Hanlon, Heinlein, Bonaparte et al.) isn’t actually a rule. It’s more like a guideline. . . .

Actually, I think there has been some confusion in the reporting. If I am not mistaken, there are two different images here. One is the cloak in which the image of the Virgin miraculously imprinted. The second one is the painting of the Virgin that so many in Mexico venerate. These are two different things. The cloak, “God painted.” The painting was made by the hands of man.

Which one was Hillary asking about? It is not clear to me.

  11. 11. downtowndubai

    bob-

the hilary beast would probably say something like…”think he’s jewish…i am !!!!”

  12. This is really a fiendishly clever plot to convince the rest of the world that the can’t depend on Uncle Sugar to play the adult so they have to stop being free riders.

My prediction is that we see serious thumb suckers by the media pushing this line in a few months.

  13. 13. Gaffe Prices

Were it not for the reverence of the place, the image, and the sanctity of the ‘Patroness of the Americas’ appearing on the cloak, this might be an amusing anecdote.

I had a professor in Art school, who loved to lecture on Giotto. he gave the background of Giotto’s time; it was a time of war, crime, the youth had descended into violence and gangs, chaos was on the march. He would show slides of Giotto’s fresco cycle alter pieces in the Arena Chapel at Padua.

And he (because he was an artist; painter in fact, and that dept had the most non-conformist types) he had the temerity (in secular terms) to say: “When you see these Giotto fresco paintings- You believe it”. (!)”

He thought that much of their visual power. So if one asks, who painted Giotto’s fresco cycle alter pieces at the Arena Chapel at Padua?

It depends how you look at it

The wiki doesn’t state where the actual icon is currently located, but my wife is pretty sure that the Basilica of Guadalupe holds the original cloth. BTW when I read this story to my wife the look on her face was priceless (utter shock).

  15. 15. Charles

Mexican Catholicism is much like the Catholicism of Europe before the Reformation.

  16. 16. Wadeusaf

“Which one was Hillary asking about? It is not clear to me.”

Um in the chapel, The cloak which was brought down from its usual place especially for her, she was referring to the cloak, in the courtyard, well…, uh….,hummm, I think she was referring to Mary the mother of Jesus.

Hey Benj, what about the Afpak plan? Where are the state department players planning to go? Canada or Mexico or do you think significant numbers can be found to actually go to Afpak? Or will the Army and the Marines once again be forced by circumstance into performing multiple tasks? Not that they couldn’t handle it. As proven in Iraq. I worry though about the pak part of the equation. Gotta try it though.

So whats with all the nonsense about gun running by US civilians er questionably documented persons of unspecified Countries of Origin Participating in an out of country counter contingency operation, when it is the US government that has been the major source of supply? Crazy stuff we mainly feared would happen in Iraq, is happening in Mexico. With no reset or overcharge available, it looks to me like Oh’s just giving it all away.

Contingency Operation Planned Only Under Threat.

And here I thought Hillary was going to be some kind of post-modern Lucrezia Borgia

  18. 18. JMH

Peregruzka. Ancient Chicagoan word meaning “present.”

Remember, Hillary is from Chicago too. Irony of ironies for her, if she’d ran for senate from her real home state instead of carpetbagging in NY, she might have gotten the nomination last year.

Of course, her recent performance as SecState kinda torpedoes the idea that she’s more competent than ol’ Prompterbreath himself. Which was a pretty silly notion anyway. She only looked experienced in comparison with him, but neither are competent to be in charge of anything.

Yes, staffers should have briefed her. But she has a reputation of being, shall we say, a poor listener and not always taking kindly to being told something by her inferiors.

  19. JMH,
She could be the answer to Global Warming. The room temperature drops when she shows up. I’ve felt it.

    benj:

Given the level of flat-out demonization of George W. Bush indulged in by the Left, including Barack Obama himself, it should not be a surprise if Barack Obama’s opponents return the favor.

If the Obama administration actually turns out to be successful in implementing good policy, that would be good. That appears to be doubtful. Demagoguery on the part of his supporters doesn’t help his legacy. Obama risks getting tarred with a caricature of himself as a person who cannot comprehend that opposition to him can come from anybody other than Rush Limbaugh and as a person who refuses to recognize any legitimate moral objections to his policies.

Present historians rightly see Indian removal by the Jackson administration as a hideous wrong, and yet bureaucrats of the Jackson administration sincerely believed that segregation on a massive scale was necessary to bring peace to America’s frontier. They thought they were doing good. The Obama administration ought not to be so sure of its own righteousness that it repeats the moral blunders of the Jackson administration by failing to help friends and allies.

If the Obama administration claims to “make peace” with America’s enemies by betraying America’s friends and allies, America will fail to achieve peace while also losing its friends.

Anybody notice Condi’s respectful line on the new admin

Big deal. Republicans are far more polite then Democrats. They still value protocol. And some of them, I suspect, even feel a little queasy when they lie in public. Which, by the way, has been a huge detriment to them, since the Dems don’t give a hoot about any of those things, and find no lie too outrageous to not repeat ad infinitum. And they certainly don’t stoop to insult. They stand right up and insult proudly.

Really, the Republicans are playing with unloaded weapons compared to the Dems. Notice — one tiny example — how there were no stories about the White House being trashed by the outgoing Bush team, unlike the adolescent jerkwads of the Clinton squad. When O’s team leaves — praise allah let it be 2012 — they’ll probably burn the joint down.

Somewhat off-topic, but while we are speaking of religious art I’ll point out that if any BCers will be in Boston between now and August, I strongly recommend a visit to the Venetian painting exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts. Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese … rarely will you see such a collection of paintings in North America, so intriguingly presented. Tintoretto’s Baptism of Christ especially is magnificent, though the entire show is certainly worth a trip to Boston.

  23. 23. Dave

This sort of stuff may run in the Clinton family.
On a visit to Berlin, Bill ran off at the mouth about a noted guest in the audience.

He kept saying how much he admired that great feminist pioneer and icon: Candy Bomber.

When C54 maestro “Swede” Larsen stood up to be introduced, the only reason Bill Clinton was not hooted off the stage was that the audience was too busy trying to personally shake hands with a hero of the Berlin airlift.

  24. 24. blert

    That’s a great telling, Dave.
