Afshan Azad, “Harry Potter” Actress, Tries to Reverse Course

When a woman’s batterer is finally arrested, she is often the first to plead with authorities to let him go. He is her provider, perhaps the father of her children; she “loves” him. More to the point: she is now really afraid that he will kill her because his abuse has been publicly exposed and he has been arrested for it.

When a woman turns to the law — which is there to protect her — she may be endangering herself even further. As powerful as the law may be, criminals do not obey it and police officers cannot be everywhere and at all times. When the law is not looking, the further outraged abuser will exact vengeance. He will kill the woman who turned to the law, who publicly shamed her husband and family.

This is what Muzzammil (“Mo”) Hassan did in Buffalo when his wife Aasiya finally got an order of protection against his savage beatings and verbal and psychological abuse. He beheaded her. This is what husband-batterers of every ethnicity tend to do — not behead, but murder battered wives when they leave or turn to the law. This is one reason that so many battered women stay.

Interestingly,  according to my most recent study in Middle East Quarterly, only among Muslim batterer-murderers do the woman’s family of origin and/or the husband’s family of origin sometimes collaborate in her honor killing. This never happens in western cases of domestically violent femicide.

We must keep all this in mind as we contemplate the most recent news out of England: Bangladeshi British-Muslim Afshan Azad, the Harry Potter actress whose father and brother threatened to kill her and “badly bruised” her over her relationship with a Hindu man, has been begging the court to release her brother and father who have now been jailed for five weeks. According to the Daily Mail:

“The actress has tried on three occasions to retract her statement and has pleaded with the Crown Prosecution Service not to proceed with the matter. … This is a desperately sad situation. She never wanted her father or brother locked up.”

There is no honor in honor killing! It is barbaric. This poor girl will withdraw her testimony and they will kill her.

  2. I can’t read Afshan’s mind. Since mothers, sisters, aunts … all play a collaborative role in honor killings, the possibility exists that Afshan believes these people are right, even though she simultaneously believes she wants to save her own life.
It would be wonderful if she became a voice speaking out against honor murders. If she doesn’t, well–why should she be different from her family and friends?

  3. 3. Dr McCosker

There is only one good that may come out of this. Many – who knows how many? thousands or more? – ‘Harry Potter’ fans have had their attention abruptly drawn to ‘honor’ murders, and to Islam; in this case, because the motive is Afshan’s relationship with a Hindu, to the sharia rule that a Muslim woman is not permitted to marry (or take as a lover) a non-Muslim man. All it will take is a few Islamosavvy persons who also happen to be ‘Harry Potter’ fans, visiting the relevant discussion sites, or in the talkbacks to online newspaper coverage, and a whole lot more people may wake up and realize the true ugliness of sharia and the way it is enforced: by vigilante violence, what Nonie Darwish calls ‘allah’s enforcers’. And so, perhaps, lots of Harry Potter fans will discover that there are *real* people out there who are worse than Voldemort’s fictional followers, and just as bent on World Domination, and just as obsessed with Power and ‘purity’. Afshan, there in the real world, Muslim girl with Hindu boyfriend, is like a person from a fictional Death Eater family who has fallen in love with a Muggle.

“Well, you don’t just hand in your resignation to Voldemort. It’s a lifetime of service or death.” – Sirius Black to Harry Potter, on the Death Eaters, Voldemort’s minions (Order of the Phoenix, p. 104)

  4. 4. Supreme Allied Commander

Phyllis, thanks for keeping these things in the news. I hope this girl sees your warnings. The whole world needs to wake up to these monsters.

  5. 5. Leatherneck

Don’t worry people, I made a deal with the family to buy Afshan, bringing honor back to the family.

Of course, we all know it is wrong to own women like cattle, but I am doing it for Afshan. Just because she is beautiful has nothing to do with it.

    • David Stein

Catholic priests used to treat little alter boys as sex toys

      • Leatherneck

Mohammad loved little boys too. BTW, the Universal Church is full of paganism.

      • JFM

Actually a German non-catholic study found that boys were at greater risk of being raped by their professors when thse were “civilians” than when they were catholic priests or monks. Perhaps the left should point fingers at itself for a change.

  6. 6. Linda Rivera

Afshan must immediately contact the organization in London mentioned by Phyllis for support and advice. G-D forbid she would ever go back to her own family. It is horrific that the families will PRETEND a love for their children to get their children back so that they can kill them. In Islam, there is no such thing as the unconditional love that non-Muslim parents have for their children.

G-D’s requirement for ALL humanity is KINDNESS:

And what does the L-RD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your G-D. Bible, Micah 6:8

Thank G-D for the Bible and Western civilization. It is all that separates us from utter horror.

    • myth buster

Islamic families don’t even know what love is. “Greater love hath no man than this, to lay down his life for his friends.”-John 15:13
Would an Islamic man guard his wife or children with his life? I doubt it.

      • Taxpayer

No, but he’ll guard HIS life with his wife and children…

  7. 7. Steve

It should not be up to the child to decide the fate of their parents and siblings. If any attempt at honor killing whether by family members or a by a hitman results in life imprisonment for all immediate family members, the practice might stop.

  8. 8. Ellen K

Pundits and politicians keep telling up how Islam is the religion of peace. They demand equality even to the point of subverting existing laws and seek to impose their own narrow cultural beliefs and paint them as religious dogma. Then we are promised that those who have become “westernized” won’t act out in such dramatic ways, yet in Canada, Texas and other western nations, the victims and potential victims of mislaid sharia law litter the newspapers and television newscasts. When someone who has taken on a western job and become successful in it can be so threatened, then nobody within the reaches of the culture is safe. As Shakespeare wrote “You can smile and smile and still be a villain.” I think it’s wise that we remember that in dealing with Islam.

  9. Why do you call it “honor murder.” There is nothing honorable about it.

    It’s murder, plain and simple.

    • Delia

AMEN. Exactly. It’s absolutely inhumane and revolting to think some people believe they can slaughter a human being like an animal just because they are ‘embarrassed’ or ‘ashamed’ over an incident. Talk about primitive and BACKWARD and pathetically IGNORANT.

      • Andy Gump (formerly Oscar the Grump)

        Delis,
Where have you been? I’ve missed seeing you on this site. I know that I’m not as active as I used to be; however, I still read the blogs and comments. Are you still eating raw peppers and spitting fire?

tbh i know the family they local, the friends with my parents and shes friends with my cousins,am a british born bangladeshi 20 year old male ,this story has been mislead, her brother and dad yes they where angry at her threw some verbal abuse such as i’ll kill u out of rage and bengali syleti (bengali language) phases etc, there was no attempted murder or intent it was just a figure of speech, there are loads of bengali phases parents use which all the time which sounds more serious when translates to english, but there no intent in it just a figure of speech, the amount of time my parent used this bengali/syleti phases which translate to ill will kill you when i was younger and got into trouble, i should have been dead a million time now lol.however yes i beleive the brother did slap her which is wrong, and they should have delt with this better.but this story has been soo misguided its unbeliveable. And everyone forgets about the hindu boyfriend his parents have no clue he was dating her until now and his in deep shit from his parents aswell cause she is muslim.
i agree with everyone honour killing is so wrong. However this is not a honour kill attempt at all.

    • NahnCee

Do you really Laugh Out Loud when you threaten to kill someone, Miahuk?

      • “Do that again, you little monster, and I’ll half kill you!”

Course that usually ends in traditional lower-class English families when the child is around 12…

Families differ, even within cultures. In some, dire threats of blood-curdling revenge are merely expressions of parental displeasure.

In others, alas, a quiet “You displease me” can be followed up later by violence leading to the morgue – if they ever find the body parts.

    • wayne

      Miahuk,
The story said she was “badly bruised”. Sounds like she got more than a little slap. One who would minimize the brutality of a man against a woman is not to be trusted.

    • Miahuk – your statement has the ring of truth.

But how can we be sure? How can we differentiate between those families where everything is a 3-act melodrama, and those where the situation is much more sinister?

The problem is that actual physical violence was done. That’s the most reliable touchstone we have. As soon as that happens, we have to treat the situation as one of potential murder, because of past experience with those of your ethnic group and co-religionists.

We do the majority a great dis-service when we do so of course, stereotyping at its worst. But until your community polices itself, what alternative do we have, to stop English women of Bangladeshi extraction from being murdered?

    • hubrislam

      Miahuk:

If you exist, (if that is your true name) you are just one step removed from the one who committed an aggravated assault on Afshan Azad.
I hope that your ‘excessive Bangladeshi language is not harmful’ excuse for a criminal, does not wash in UK.
A death threat is a death threat. It is the threateners who must change, not UK law and the UK population.
(If it does go to court, the ‘accused’ should ask for that imbecile judge from the Brimar case. He is a classic mohammed brown-noser, and deserves to be examined as mentally unfit, and his cases re-heard.)

Should the infantile murder go ahead, people like yourself should be named in the MSM and on the blogosphere as ENABLERS. If there are hundreds or thousands like you trying to sanitize this foul situation, you give comfort to the practitioners of this evil cult called a religion.

    • Phillep

I would like to see you put your life up as surety for hers. (That is “She dies, you die”)

Too bad there is no way to do that over the net.

  11. 11. NahnCee

Shouldn’t Mommy Dearest also be locked up since you *know* in these family honor killing scenarios, it’s she who usually lures the victim to her death, lies to cover up the evidence, and helps to hold her down while her throat is being slit or her vagina is being sewed up. I do not believe that this female child’s mother doesn’t know all about what is being planned, is not part of trying to thwart justice for the son and father, and probably hasn’t caused a bruise or three her own damned self during the family beating sessions.

The fact that Islam turns its females into the same sort of bitter and hysterical creatures as their men is what has convinced me that the religion and its whole mindset is evil. When you read about horrendous abuse cases out of Saudi Arabia, or Muslims holding sexual slaves here in the U.S., the wife is always front and center as a participant in burning with irons, scalding with acid, and lopping off with knives. Women simply do not typically behave in this fashion in the West, and even the Chinese have stopped binding girl children’s feet. What is it about Islam that demands such barbarous cruelty both to each other and to every other walking, breathing, sentient creature?

    • Leatherneck

I going to guess they really worship Lucifer. Allah (the god Sin)is just another false god, and all false gods are of Lucifer. Sin is the son of the Sun god. Some call him the Anti-Christ.

Hate? No problem. Murder? No problem. All in the name of Allah the moon god.

Don’t forget, it is really those nasty Christians, and Joooosss who are the real evil in the world.

  12. 12. Delia

When you kill a person, you are a murderer UNLESS that person had a fair trial and was prosecuted under a FAIR and JUST law and sentenced to DEATH.

There is absolutely NO honor in MURDER. None. Zilch. Nada. Only the lowest of the lowly scum of the earth murder and think THEY can take the law into their own hands.

It’s an absolute tragedy and this behavior is unfortunately endemic in the Muzzie world. Like the novel Harry Potter, this story will only end in catastrophe and the libby media will be sure to kill it.

  16. The barbaric culture of honor killing must be eliminated all together. Cultures and societies that tolerate, condone, or accept such act of savageness are capable of doing much more harm to its members and humanity.

  17. When a woman’s batterer is finally arrested, she is often the first to plead with authorities to let him go.

And when a man’s batterer is ever arrested, (for he is unlikely to have reported her criminal behavior) HE is often the first to plead with authorities to let HER go.

    SNAP!

One wonders about a country that it is so multicultural that it is willing to see its Western values of freedom and liberty compromised and ultimately nullified by an alien, anti-life ethic. One wonders why the barbarians who shout that “Sharia will rule, get used to it” are allowed freedom of speech, but not anyone who defies them and calls them what they are. And one wonders about the victims, such as Azad, who knowlingly place their lives in jeopardy by pleading for the freedom of their relatives to take vengeance on her. As Muslim men can divorce their wives by saying “I divorce thee,” their beaten and imperiled victims should just say to their parents and siblings and cousins and aunts, “I disown thee, I reject thee, I estrange thee.” But, being raised in a Muslim environment does destructive things to a mind. It makes one “submissive” down to the core, and makes it a “sin” to question rebellion against it.

  19. Of all the world’s major religions, it really does seem as if Islam has kept the fewest feature we would recognize as noble, and enshrined as holy the most perverse doctrines of violence, hatred, anger, bigorty, and viciousness.

How does one reconcile a God who is supposedly merciful with the wanton murder of young girls, particularly through the process of betraying the most innocent and intimate trust?

    • Duncan Druhl

You don’t. You can’t. It is not a religion, but a Luciferian ideology when practised in the “Ring of Hate”; unlike, by the way, people form Bangladesh who are Muslim. It is a completely different group in the Far East, curiously.

The Islamist follower has no real G-d as we understand them, merely a spirit whose blood lust he has to satisfy. It is not so far from the very mad followers of Kali who killed hundreds of thousands in their wild blood lust for Kali. Strange people – you don’t want to invite them to watch the World Cup with you.

This is a good opportunity to call attention about the tremendous crimes committed in Bangladesh against Hindus, day in day out. The Hindus are rapidly dissapearing from Bangladesh (as they dissapeared from Pakistan) while millions of Muslim refugees from Bangladesh take refugge in India from the utter poverty of their land. Not a finger is raised at the United Nations, not a liberal, a “fellow traveller”, a J-street-type Jew, or few for that matter in the world mentions these atroocities. It has been lately left to Francois Gautier, a frenchman from Auroville, to lead the campaign of awareness:

    http://www.hindujagruti.org/news/category/atrocities-on-hindus/bangladesh-atrocities#

Mr. Gautier, not even an Indian by birth…Why India and Hindus are such COWARDS is another story. Please read a brilliant explanation why below:

Violence, sex abuse, molestation. No religion has a monopl on it. How long did Catholic priests get away with molesting little boys? Just another tragic episode in the name of religion.

    • Fearless Ferenc

Water is wet. Sun rises in the east. Bears excrete in the woods. And Lefties trot out moral equivalence whenever their Muslim allies are slighted.

    • Gene Chandler

David, the difference is that the Christian faith, no matter what the denomination) CONDEMNS murder, child abuse, etc. (Jesus had some really scary things to say to those who offend little ones)

The Muslim faith REQUIRES “honor” murders. And I believe the Muslim faith DOES have pretty much a monopoly on that requirement.

      • David Stein

Oh no, they did not condone peodifiles public, just hid them from view. The only problem with the Muslim faith today is that it’s been hijacked by extremests. Just an FYI, the US has had close relations with the Saudis for over 60 years and never once took a close look at practices within their society.

        • Connor

No, it is not a peaceful religion. It DOES demand the murder of all nonmuslims and there is NO such thing as moderate Islam. Not at all. Extremists are the ones that follow the religion (political system) to a T. Its a totalitarian system of governmental control over every aspect of one’s life all done in the name of Allah.

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQOCcx5V9RI

    • As horrible as Catholic sexual abuse of children was (and still is), it is far more prevalent in American government schools – both in estimated percentage of teachers victimizing and students victimized, and of course in absolute numbers. Google public school sex abuse. You lash out at Catholics because this behaviour goes against their own teaching (whereas in government schools, sexual immorality is encouraged and taught). If a chain-smoking doctor warns you that smoking is addictive and damages your health, should you label him a hypocrite and ignore his warning? There are two kinds of “hypocrisy”. There are those who sincerely believe a principle, but fail to live by it. There are also those who pay lip service to a principle to manipulate others, but do not actually believe it or have any intention to truly follow it.

  23. 23. MiamaMan

David, David, come on…The molestation of little boys by Catholic priests was never done in the name of religion. It was done in the name of the Devil behind the deviant minds of these so-called Catholic priests, and the whole Catholic church is partly to blame by allowing a bunch of gays, perverts, mentally-deranged people to enter the priesthood, in the name of liberalism. It all started in the 1960s.

Where do Christian doctrine or behavior condones this? Compare that to Islam, Sharia Law, and the behavior of their followers, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to notice the difference.

    • David Stein

The Vatican covered the perps up, beleiving that their souls wil be saved at the gates of St Peter. The Vatican regected the use of secular law to persecute them and favofred ther own religious laws.

It did not start in the 1960′s. In fact child molestation was that dirty little secret kept from the public well before that. Child molestation has been happening for centuries under the eyes of the Vatican. Since when did Liberlaism take hold in the Catholic church?

BTW, child molestaion is also a problem in the Ultra Orthodox Jewish community and si just beginnig to come to light t thanks to its exposure in the Catholic church. As a Jews, i feel ashamed, althogh it is very limited to a small group of people.

      • hubrislam

        @David Stein
Can we keep this on thread?
Mohammedans lust after little boys the same as others.
If enough scientific data can establish that there are 10% homosexuals in the world, or 8.2 – 11.3% +/- etc., etc (my made up figures), and there is no statistically significant variation across nations or religions, then the same can be done for pedophilia.
Take this question to another website and look for figures of percentage pedophiles (other terms?) by nation and religion, bearing in mind what problems there would be of psychologist availability, affordability, national ‘projection’, etc.
Regarding ‘projection’, consider that there are NO homosexuals (also no pedophiles?) in Iran, by government edict.
Whatever proscriptions there are in Shariah, and the entire mohammedan canon, man/boy sex exists in Islam, such that the Taliban were ordered not to take their lovers into the field (of battle!) with them.
Read also: “The Kite Runner”. If this is an Afghan peculiarity, the figures will show.

Unfortunately for Islam their ‘perfect exemplar’ set a disastrous example with Aisha, starting with his lust and ‘possession’ at six, and sex at nine (am or pm, or both?)
Back to the real thread? PLEASE?

        • ad altare

These percentages may hold across all races and religions, but when it comes to positions of power and trust within religions (priests, etc) – the ratios get very skewed. Homosexual men and men with pedophilia tendencies within any society are much more attracted to these professions than all others are because they get easy and constant access to the objects of their affection, they get (until recently) the automatic trust of parents and, in the case of Catholics, they do not have to explain to their families and neighbors why they are not getting married and having children. This may sound harsh or homophobic but I assure you I mean to be neither. I was delivered to a Seminary at the tender age of 13 and observed this phenomenon directly. I have no doubt that a higher than normal percentage of the boys and men who saw it through and remained comfortable with this vocation (I was not one of them) did so based primarily on their homosexual self-identity.

Furthermore, it is not entirely off topic to bring this up because the acceptance of molestations by the church hierarchy and the laity (although not as horrific as honor killing) shows blind acceptance of the power structure within organized religion no matter how extreme and unacceptable their actions.

      • Joe K

        David,

Seriously. What is with the whole “but we have bad people in the US too” schtick? The issues being discussed here is that a “Religion” that continues to treat it’s own people in horrific manner without compunction AND with willing assistance from the victim and the victims family and community. The beatings, the stonings, the “honor” killings, are all an indication of a savage and brutal people who have not earned the right to be called civilized, much less earn the right to tell the rest of the western world how we should act. The fact the anyone would try to justify their behaviour as acceptable or that their religion was “hijacked” by a few extremists is sick. When the Muslim community as a whole stands up a condemns this behaviour, when the Muslim community ferrits out the guilty and bring them to a western court for justice and embraces rule of law, when the Muslim community stands up to the Mullahs and their blood lust and religion of death mentality, then and only then, should we consider embracing them into the fellowship of the western world.

  24. 24. Duncan Druhl

Stockholm Syndrome runs rampant through the minds of such victims. All they want is to be “free” of the abuse, the pain, the frustration – and almost any solution is better than what they are suffering; thus the “reuniting”, forgiveness, and reconciliation moves that often precede their murder.

Those who inflict such pain have no place in this world or attached to anything remotely living for what pain, torture, and abuse they bring to otherwise positive lives. There is no place in this world for such dark forces and those who need light must flee these talking slugs/pigs and never return unless they are willing to give up their lives.

It is no more complicated than that, as the mental illness of the perpetrators is not going to be treated anytime soon – and even if it is, accepting ignorant Muslim upbringing as the cause won’t be very PC or popular, eh?

  25. 25. Jumpin Jack

Honor killing: for bringing dishonor to a man’s family. Or, turning portions of the Middle East into a smoking sheet of glass for bringing dishonor to the family of man?

Either way, these folks might want to check the weight of the baggage they’re carrying around.

  26. 26. Carolyn

Ms. Chesler – Afshan Azad did NOT ask ‘three times’ to have her murderous father and brother released from prison, nor has she ever ‘regretted’ pressing charges against them. If you will read the news more closely, you will discover that it was NOT Ms. Azad who said this but instead it was the LAWYER for her father and brother who gave out this lie. I’m sorry, Ms. Chesler, but you’ve just fallen for the oldest (and dirtiest) trick in the criminal law field – destroying the reputation of the accuser. The lawyer for the father and brother is desperate – his clients are facing huge jail sentences for attempted murder. The lawyer’s only hope is to make the accuser retract her statement – ‘oops! It was all a misunderstanding.’ Unfortunately for the lawyer, Ms. Azad has never regretted her report to the police, nor has she tried to have her father and brother released from jail. This is proven by the fact that there is NO press conference, no recording, no video of her ever saying any such thing. It is even more obvious that she never said it by the fact that she is still desperately hiding from her murderous family in another city.

Ms. Chesler – it’s simple. Unless you hear Ms. Azad SAY it herself, then she hasn’t. As I’ve just pointed out, it’s the lawyer for her murderous father and brother who’s given this lie to the media in a desperate attempt to save his clients from jail.

Sadly, Ms. Chesler, you ARE accurate in pointing out that victims of abuse often plead for mercy for their abusers. You are also sadly accurate in revealing that those abusers inevitably reward their victim’s mercy with murder. Last but not least, you are sadly accurate in saying that Ms. Azad can never go home. So long as her family clings to the ‘religion of peace’, they will do their best to kill her – and they will do so with no remorse or shame.

    • hubrislam

Is there no law about publishing blatantly false statements, if that’s what the lawyer did?

If the lawyer said: “I understand that…” or “I believe that…”, he should still be questioned on the substance. What date, time, place, method (phone etc.), as well as what was purportedly stated.

If he/she was substantively correct but ethically wrong, then that should also be dealt with transparently enough to satisfy the average citizen.

I have ZERO trust in their PC system, after the Brimar fiasco.

  27. 27. Ruler4You

Some times Honor is more than a one way street. This Woman is honoring her family, and doing so in a Christian way. Today, we are told that muslims ‘honor’ their family names by killing those in their family that don’t measure up to the koranic ‘ruler’(tape measure) rather than letting each member of the family set the bar for their own “honor”, as Christians do.

This makes all behavior subjective. Worse, subjectivity is externally affected by other non metric influences, such as moods.

No one lives forever in this world. But Christians as well as other religions believe in an afterlife, non subjective (finite) judgment and in Christianity, redemption through Jesus Christ.

The Stockholm Syndrome is a fair descriptor for the phenomena of the abused pleading for mercy for the abusers. But in the name of Christianity a true believer will plead for the life of even the worst in humanity, for every life is a gift from God.

  28. 28. Janis

People, even if she did plead for mercy, it’s not stockholm syndrome that’s causing it. It’s the knowledge that the law isn’t going to do jack squat. A woman is bashed to within an inch of her life or threatened with murder by someone who thinks he owns her like a piece of trash.

She — foolishly — attempts to play by the rules since that’s what one is supposed to do, and tries to defend herself within the law by trusting to the courts and the police. She does exactly what women are always told to do — trusts the law and make a fair accusation with plenty of evidence.

She then finds out that these “laws” don’t apply to her and don’t care, and that the courts, the cops, and a lot of people will proceed to slap him in the wrist and set him loose again.

That’s about the time she realizes — quite accurately and with clear-headed sobriety and not because of some stupid syndrome — that she is dead fucking meat because the law will not protect her at all, despite what she imagined it would do before.

She’s toast. Pure and simple. She’s murdered if she doesn’t appeal to the law, and she’s murdered if she does, because either way that son of a bitch is walking free and she will never be safe. Ever. The only option she has at this point if she hopes to ever see the open sky again is to try to “make up” with her attempted murderer.

And she is then accused of being a lying spiteful slut who ruined the reputation of These Fine Gentlemen, and in a few months, she’s a corpse anyhow, a story that unlike her retraction on page one, is buried on the bottom of page 14.

Think this stuff THROUGH, people. Jeez. This ain’t rocket science, okay?

One point people. This is not about Islam. “Honor” murders are not commanded by the Koran, nor (in general) encouraged by Moslem clergy.

The root of them is an archaic “honor-shame” culture in which female defiance of patriarchal control is intolerable. It is common to Arab culture, and to some other Moslem cultures, but it is also found in non-Moslem cultures: the Druze and Yezidi in the Middle East, and Sikhs and Hindus in India.

Arabs add one vile feature: the killing of a rape victim because she is now defiled, and this impurity must be physically eliminated from the clan.

Dude, that’s like saying that since some teeny fraction of men get breast cancer that it’s as much a male problem as a female one. It’s not. The fraction of women that get it is too huge. Similarly, the percentage of “honor” murders among what Dr. Chesler calls radical Islamists is huge. Like it or not, it’s a much more serious problem for them.

It’s also irritating to hear someone try to effectively play down outrage over cold blooded murder mostly of women by saying what amounts to, “Oh, come on — everyone does it.”

      • Rich Rostrom

No it isn’t. It’s trying to recognize the real cause of the problem, rather than wasting energy in the wrong directions, and foolishly making unnnecessary enemies.

Rather than denouncing Islam as the cause of honor murders, there should be pressure on Islamic clergy and scholars to live up to their words against it. They don’t because the cultural imperative to maintain “honor” by control of female relatives overrides religious allegiance.

The reality of these areas is that clan, family, or tribal honor comes first, absolutely. Poliitical allegiance, or even religious devotion, are passing fancies by comparison.

Thus Moslem political and religious authorities avoid challenging these practices. Their feet need to be held to the fire, as it were.

Their feet need to be held to the fire, as it were.

Which is what is being done here. Calling them out on it.

I know I come late to this thread but this situation has bothered me. Perhaps its being an older brother or some intrinsic protective instinct but though its never been said both my sister know beyond a shadow of a doubt that if they were battered their signifigant others would be shattered. The ability and drive to protect our own simply does not exist in some cultures, and it is dying in others.

It was General Napier – who was I think a govenor General in India who said

“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours”

replace references to ‘fire/burn’ with ‘honor killing’ and apply as needed. A culture that does not protect it’s vunerable from bullies will not beable to protect itself from external bullies either.

The girl’s brother’s phony concern for her career is really contemptible. The only concern they have for her or her career is how much money they can grab from her.

Of course she wants the charges dropped: she loves them. That is why we also have a tradition of protecting the innocent from members of their own families.

Remember how the British dealt with “wife burnings” in India? The custom where the wife is forced to “join” her husband on the funeral pyre?
An Indian was arguing with a British magistrate about this, saying, “But’s it’s our custom, you should respect our customs and traditions”.
The British magistrate replied calmly, “We have no problem with respecting your customs. You can go ahead and burn a woman alive if you wish. Then…we will institute British custom and hang all those responsible”.

Of course the real question is…what sort of mental disease is it that allows the Elites ruling England today to ALLOW this kind of sick culture onto their shores in the first place?
Any Muslim wishing to be a British citizen must swear an oath to uphold a long list of traditions and perspectives and to be loyal to Britain beyond Islam. They must renounce all the violent passages of the Koran and Hadith.
If they won’t or don’t…they should be deported….immediately.

  36. 36. JFM

They must renounce all the violent passages of the Koran and Hadith.

Impossible: Koran is supposed to be the unchanged word of Allah, that ins fact it coexisted with Allah from all eternity, that it wasn’t created and apparently not even Allah can change a comma in it. They cannot renounce parts of the Koran. Only solution is renounce Islam.
