I have previously questioned the outrageous likening of Al-Qaeda’s Khalid Sheik Mohammed to abolitionist John Brown in the pages of the New York Times. Brown opposed slavery; Mohammed believes in practicing it.
Then, I discovered that the Brown/KSM analogy has only begun to gather steam. For example, “Slavery and the Legacy of Violence in our Times” will be the subject of a 4 day symposium beginning on December 4th at North Elba, Lake Placid. It is John Brown’s 150th Commemoration. Here’s how the Symposium is described:

Who was John Brown? To some, he was a terrorist, to others a martyr and the first to stand against the violence of slavery. Guess who’s one of the “distinguished speakers?” None other than Bernadine Dohrn, an “activist and co-founder of the Weather Underground” and the wife of William Ayers, a good friend of President Obama’s. Kevin Bales, President of Free the Slaves (I hope he’s thinking about Sudan and the Arab Middle East here); Russell Banks, author of Cloudsplitter; George Holmes, executive director of CORE–among others.
Is the Weather Underground now trying to position itself as historically similar to a nineteenth century abolitionist “just cause” uprising? Or to a contemporary international terrorist organization which shares the Weather Underground’s views which oppose American capitalism and imperialism? Why else would Dohrn now proudly identify herself as a co-founder of the Weather Underground?
Back in the day, I knew some Weather Underground people and their many supporters. Some of these people were genuinely idealistic, some were merely young, naieve, conformist, and very much caught up in the historical moment; but some were dangerous ideologues who made alliances with African-American criminals in the name of “brotherhood” and “revolution.”
I fear that the left-Islamist alliance which is common on American campuses and reflected in the White House relationship to Islamist states and possibly to Islamist terrorists (enemy combatants) may be a continuation of this very tendency.
Do I oppose racism–Hell yes. But Al-Qaeda and other radically fundamentalist Muslim groups practice gender and religious apartheid as well as outright slavery.
For example, in many Muslim and Arab countries, (especially in Saudi Arabia), “guest worker ” female housemaids (who often come from non-Arab and non-Muslim countries) are forced to work around the clock and are also physically beaten, sexually harassed, and routinely raped; this phenomena is well documented and yet remains unchanged. Like their male counterparts in the construction trades, “guest workers” are also forced to live sleep in crowded, wretched housing, are sometimes poorly fed or starved–and are often cheated of their wages. Their passports are held. If and when they escape and allege abuse, they may be further punished, or simply shipped back to their more impoverished countries of origin.
Then there are the outright (often black African) slaves in Sudan as well as Muslim girls and women who’ve been kidnapped into sex slavery by Islamist paramilitary squads in Algeria or into temporary one hour “marriages” in Iran.
Do I oppose racism–Hell yes, always have. But I cannot comprehend all the other alleged anti-racists on the left who fail to understand how deeply anti-African and anti-black most Arab Muslims are. For example, the genocide and gender cleansing in the Sudan is being perpetrated by ethnic Arab Muslims against black African Muslims, Christians, and animists.
The first known honor killing carried out in the United States took place in 1989 in St Louis, Missouri. The final straw for Palestina Isa’s Palestinian family was her friendship with a classmate who happened to be an African-American.
Are Muslim women themselves safe from similar abuse if they do what they’re expected to do? Hell no.
Women in Muslim countries are not safe when and if they wear shrouds, body-bags, burqas. They too are routinely beaten and raped at home. The statistics for only Pakistan and Afghanistan are way off the charts. But, the existence of chadors, burqas, chadaris, etc. also endangers Muslim civilians.
For example, this week’s bombing in Somalia at a university graduation was a tragedy for those who were killed or wounded and for their families. But please note: The bombing was apparently carried out by a male suicide bomber dressed as a woman in a burqa/Islamic Veil.
The Islamic world ought to rethink its own policy vis a vis the Islamic Veil.
It is utterly irrational for anyone to support Khalid Sheik Mohammed. But then, it is irrational for Iran to think that it has a tangible quarrel with Israel. It is insane for Venezuela and North Korea to think that they have a tangible quarrel with Israel. Yet Hugo Chavez has praised Carlos the Jackal. North Korea has gone even further: it built a nuclear facility in Syria, which Israel, fortunately, was able to destroy. Not only that, North Korea sent its pilots–pilots, not just airplanes–to fight Israel in 1973 and 1967.
The Islamic world is not likely to rethink the Veil simply because it was used as a camouflage to enable a suicide bomber to get his job done. Crazy Islamists are never upset when Muslims kill themselves in order to kill other Muslims. After all, both the killers and victims will go to heaven and enjoy their 72 virgins.
If ever the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Mosque of Omar are placed under Arab military control, they will be blown up as part of a never-ending struggle between competing groups of Muslims.

John Brown was a very destructive man. He was both a terrorist—and a childishly naïve individual. His unlawful use of violence perhaps destroyed America’s last realistic chance of avoiding a civil war. Brown foolishly believed that the slaves living in the Harper’s Ferry area were going to rebel merely because he provided them with some second-rate cutting instruments. There are more than 200,000 migrant domestic workers in Lebanon — roughly one per every four families. Overwhelmingly they are women in their 20s and 30s who come alone from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Nepal and Madagascar, to earn money to support families back home.
According to HRW, more than one third of foreign domestic workers in Lebanon are denied time off and more than 50 percent work at least 10 hours per day.
A 2001 International Labor Organization survey of Sri Lankan domestics in Lebanon found that 88 percent were given no time-off. Among the 70 respondents, nearly 30 percent said they were not given enough food to eat.
Over the past several years there have been increasing reports of exploitation documented in the media, including testimonies from domestic workers about withholding of wages, verbal or physical abuse and restrictions on free movement. Statistics on abuse are difficult to find though, because employees are often afraid to complain, prevented from doing so, or simply don’t know how.
“The isolation is key … Their passports are confiscated and they are often locked in. They are far from home, and not all of them can contact their families — some can once per month,” Houry told CNN.
One Nepalese maid who spoke to HRW from her hospital bed, after jumping from the third floor of her employer’s building to escape, said she had seen snow-capped mountains from the window and thought she could walk across to find her village. She did not understand that Lebanon was thousands of miles away from her home in Nepal. “She just had no idea where she landed,” Houry said.
Both charity organizations and foreign embassies in Lebanon say they have their hands full dealing with runaways and incidents of abuse.
In August, the Philippines Embassy reported that 117 women who had escaped from maltreatment were sleeping on the embassy floor. The Catholic relief organization CARITAS also estimated that they have an average of 40 runaway domestics sleeping in their shelter at any one time.

Unlawful killings usually result in enormous damage to the social order. Those on the pro-slavery side started doing the same thing. The famous outlaw Jessie James, for example, was also a pro-Confederate terrorist. He murdered a number of antislavery citizens. John Brown’s actions made it next to impossible to non-violently work out a solution to this most divisive issue. Peaceful evolution is always preferable over violent revolution.

One other item: The basic mistake made with John Brown was a wishy-washy administration

The graduates of our so-called best universities are usually historical illiterates. Their overall liberal arts education leaves much to be desired. A number of them foolishly assert that George W. It amazes me that so many people still damn him for defending his family in a system where there was no law and order, and then tried to use minimal violence to throw slavery’s system into disarray. Had he been a terrorist, his record would have been entirely different.
