The Socialist Mask of Marxism
“Communism is dead,” people shouted in 1989, when the Berlin Wall began to come down. Soviet communism is indeed dead as a form of government, but Marxism is on the rise again, and people are not paying attention. A few conservative luminaries, like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and Bill O’Reilly, have warned that Marxism is infecting the United States, but neither the Tea Party’s “Contract from America” nor the Republicans’ “Pledge to America” called attention to the looming dangers of Marxism. Why not? Because our well-meaning conservatives do not seem to be familiar with the undercover forms of Marxism that we are facing today.
Hiding the ugly face of Marxism has become a real Marxist science. This science was conceived by Lenin, who coined the term “useful idiots” to describe those in the West who naively promoted Marxism without knowing what it really was. Stalin perfected this Marxist science. At his request, all East European countries “liberated” by the Red Army at the end of World War II began their march toward Marx’s communism by donning socialist masks. Just a few months after the Red Army “liberated” the Kingdom of Romania, Stalin merged that country’s Communist Party with the Social Democratic Party, producing the Workers’ Party. At that time communism was a kind of scarecrow, so from one day to the next Romania no longer had a Communist Party.
East Germany went the same way. Overnight, the old Communist Party, which had become infamous after being accused of setting the Reichstag on fire in 1933, was renamed the Socialist Unity Party of Germany. The Hungarian Communist Party, which had created the shortlived Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919, was quietly rebaptized as the Hungarian Working People’s Party. Most East European governments similarly concealed their road to communism by posting innocuous nameplates at the door, such as People’s Republic or Popular Republic.
The 1963 missile crisis generated by Cuba gave the socialist mask of Marxism a dirty name in the West, and few Marxists wanted to be openly associated with socialism anymore. They therefore began hiding their Marxism under a new cover called “economic determinism,” which became all the rage among leftists who no longer wanted to be labeled socialists.
Economic determinism is a theory of survival rooted in Marx’s Manifesto (another theory of survival), but it pretends that the economic organization of a society, not the socialist class war and the socialist redistribution of wealth, determines the nature of all other aspects of its life. Over the years, economic determinism has assumed different names. Khrushchev’s dogonyat i peregonyat (catching up with and overtaking the West in ten years) and Gorbachev’s perestroika are the best known.
I wrote the script of Ceausescu’s determinism, which was hidden behind the nickname “New Economic Order.” Most Americans, who are not used to dealing with undercover Marxists, have problems recognizing one. In April 1978, President Carter hailed Ceausescu as a “great national and international leader who [had] taken on a role of leadership in the entire international community.” At the time, I was standing next to Ceausescu at the White House, and I just smiled.
Three months later, I was granted political asylum in the United States, and I informed President Carter how Ceausescu had been feeding him a pack of lies. The admiration for Ceausescu’s undercover Marxism had, however, taken on such a life of its own that the U.S. Congress, dominated by President Carter’s Democratic Party, brought the United States a sui-generis version of Ceausescu’s economic determinism. That move generated double-digit inflation. The U.S. prime rate hit 21.5%, the highest in U.S. history, and people had to spend long hours in line waiting to buy gas for their cars.
I am grateful to President Carter for signing off on my political asylum, but it was he who laid the groundwork for the Democratic Party’s disastrous flirtation with the undercover Marxism that has now gained a stronghold over the party. Laura D’Andrea Tyson, former chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors under President Clinton and later an economic adviser to President Obama, has kept that undercover Marxism alive in the U.S. She even wrote her Ph.D. dissertation on the merits of the allegedly “mixed” socialist-capitalist economies in Ceausescu’s Romania and Tito’s Yugoslavia. Two American presidents went to Bucharest to pay tribute to Ceausescu’s economic determinism — none had ever gone there before.
When economic determinism lost credibility after the devastating economic crisis in Greece, our Democratic Party began replacing it with “progressivism,” which has became the latest cover name for Marxism. The Progressive movement was born after the U.S. financial crisis of 1893, which it tried to solve by redistributing America’s wealth. The progressives pushed through the first federal income taxation, and they created a string of labor standards that opened up the floodgates of corruption and financial excess that generated the Great Depression. A new progressive movement, dubbed the New Deal, produced steep top tax rates, strict financial regulations, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, eventually generating the current economic crisis.
Today’s progressive Movement was born in New York’s Zuccotti Park. It was first known as the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, which advocated the abolition of “capitalist America.” The Democratic Party strongly embraced the “Occupy Wall Street” movement, and made “progressive” its new byword. “God bless them,” said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi about the Occupy Wall Street movement. “It’s young, it’s spontaneous, it’s focused and it’s going to be effective.” Representative Barney Frank, at that time minority leader of the House’s Financial Services Committee, welcomed “the Wall Street energy” and expressed hope that it would be “translated into political activity.”
Former White House “green jobs” czar Van Jones also announced his support for Occupy Wall Street, which he believes is the start of an “American Autumn.”
Marxism is a malignant tumor on the body of any country. This is another thing I learned during my years at the top of Marxist Romania. Marxism, like any cancer, works silently–you can feel it only after it has spread throughout the whole body, and then it is usually too late. The sudden, almost overnight, collapse of the almighty Soviet empire is incontestable proof to that.
I was 25 years old when the doctors advised my mother to have a just-discovered malignant tumor surgically removed as soon as possible. “What’s the rush, if it doesn’t hurt?” my dear mother kept asking me every time I tried to take her to the hospital. One year later I was kneeling at her grave.
I lost my mother to cancer, but I learned my lesson: if you have cancer, get rid of it any way you can. On Christmas Day 1989, the president of the undercover Marxist Romania, Nicolae Ceausescu, was executed at the end of a trial whose main accusations came almost word for word out of my book Red Horizons. From one day to the next, my native Romania became free of cancer. Now it is a flourishing country again.
The United States of America is a unique country of freedom, built by generations of entrepreneurs who came to this land of opportunity in search of religious, economic, and personal freedom. Most Americans are still independent people who do not believe that the government is a boon bestowed from on high, and who will never allow themselves to become puppets of Marxism. Our country became the leader of the world because it is a successful capitalist country, and we Americans will do our best to keep it so.
On “Say No to Socialism,” I will expose the real convictions of the Democratic Party, which is using undercover Marxism in order to transform the U.S. into a monument to itself. I am humbled and honored to be a part of PJ Media.
There are many people in this country who know how to accomplish this task much better than I do. Nevertheless, in my other life I was involved in the process of spreading the destructive virus of Marxism disguised as benign economic determinism, and I have a few thoughts about how that veiled virus can be stopped from further infecting the United States. American essayist George Santayana, an immigrant like me, used to say that those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Yes, and a little context may help. Men like Ion Mihai Pacepa are part of the solution. Contrast with, say, many Republican lawyers, who are often now identified with the problem.
Artur Davis, referred to in the article, also sounds like a man of principle, brave too. Yet in the minds of many in the Stupid Party he’s by definition an evil ‘Demonrat’ and beyond the pale. (You doubt that? — for a primer on RNC values try lurking on lucianne.com for a month.)

Those who are tired of the GOP become Libertarians. Exchanging a Democratic statist for a Republican statist does make a little sense, but Libertarians have “solutions” for problems neither major party is able to solve. Of course Libertarians don’t all agree on everything, but we generally do agree on some things. Like the Democratic “nanny state” is really a bad idea. That “gun control” makes it easier for criminals to practice their trade. That true free market health care costs less than statist health care of either flavor.

I have the impression that education in the USA, starting from the elementary school, is provided mostly, by people with low IQ, by people , who need a rigid system with heavy and empty text books and, by people who are contaminated with socialistic ideas for future of the country. If we cannot listen to and act upon the words of someone with this kind of experience in sufficient numbers to overwhelm the progressives, we are truly and justifiably doomed.
I think part of the success Marxists have had in our country is their ability to stigmatize anyone who calls them at their game. They are very good at using their supporters in MSM and Hollywood to control the dialogue.
Senator Joseph McCarthy was very successful in identifying communists in the 1950s but the term “McCarty-ite” now denotes a paranoid, right-wing wacko. Just like “birther” is used to demonize anyone who has the audacity to question the rather sketchy origins of our Dear Leader. If you don’t buy into man-made global warming, you’re a “denier.”
Anyone calling Nancy Pelosi or Barack Obama a communist is immediately discredited and relegated to kook status. Why? It’s clearly accurate.

While it’s true that many are not familiar with undercover forms of Marxism … many, many, are aware that this is exactly what is happening.
The answer to the “Why?” — has more to do with leftists and leftist media — the MSM.
They have quite successfully achieved — beginning from the McCarthy era on — the creation of a “general” acceptance that anyone mentioning “communism” — or “Marxism” — especially together with the word “masked” or “hidden” — is an extremist who has lost touch with reality — in other words — is “nuts” — (or evil) — and that person becomes a object of ridicule — a “joke.” (It’s right out of the very popular radical Alinsky’s lessons.)
It’s become so entrenched a “meme” that it’s extremely difficult to speak out about this subject — unless one is ready to be attacked viciously — and accept humiliating ridicule.
Facts are irrelevant to them — and not only have nothing to do with it, but are not even considered. It get’s an unthinking, emotional reaction. Like sound-bites.
Although New (Conservative and Libertarian) Media blogs and Comments speak freely of this — this is the reason those words haven’t been included in the “Contract with America” or “Pledge to America.” At the moment, inclusion of the word “Marxism” — or even “hidden” — will stop too many from listening further to anything else you have to say. And will give much fodder to the MSM, Leftists and their Comedians.
And, at the moment, it would inhibit Independents (who will, ultimately decide this election) — from paying attention to what is said.
It — (the true facts) — must become it’s own “meme” — and thereby the stigma and ridicule will eventually be removed — as more and more people are able to understand. But that will take a bit of time — as we’re working against the giant and powerful Mainstream Media, TV and Hollywood.

We are fortunate in America that the vast majority of persons see the term “socialism” as a distinct negative but not so much as an over-the-top term as is the case with “Marxism”. We have witnessed many countries that are not so culturally and historically removed from our own experience fall prey to socialism with negative results that are obvious to even the most casual observer. Britain would be the most obvious. We can relate to that situation and imagine the possibility of America going down the same path. That is why the liberal Democrat avoids the term “socialist” like the plague even though socialism is their desire. (Ever hear Juan Williams disparage those who would dare to call Obama a socialist?). But even the most liberal among us are not fearful if you use the term “Marxist”, or communist for that matter. In fact, they rather welcome use of those terms since by using them you have discredited yourself (falsely) entirely. Call Obama a socialist and the liberal will look down and shuffle his/her feet. Call him a Marxist and you have just removed yourself from the debate. The liberal smiles. Even most of your conservative backers will step back. You are easily dismissed. You are now “too right-wing”, possibly a little loony, certainly over-the-top. The MSM, etc. have won the battle to remove the accurate term “Marxism” from the issue. So we use the term “socialism” in its place. Most folks will accept that and concede that its philosophy is a possibility here and is abhorrent. The accusation of socialism is a powerful enough tool in the debate. Use it at every opportunity.
The big problem with the term “socialism” is that there are two major varieties: democratic sociaism and totalitarian socialism. They are frequently confused with one another.
The former is the kind practiced in democratic countries in which there is normally a mixed economy consisting of free enterprise and government programs and multiple political parties vie for power. Some parties are further left and tend to increase the size of government programs when they are in power while other parties are further right; they try to strengthen the private sector when they are in power. Examples of such countries are Britain, Canada, and the United States.
The latter is the kind practiced in Marxist countries where there is no democracy and little or no private sector of any kind. All economic activity is planned and directed by the state. Examples of such countries are the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe between the end of WW II and 1989.
Curiously enough, Stalin himself claimed to be “building socialism”, not establishing communism. Ideologically, he and his colleagues were perplexed by the fact that the revolution they had launched had happened at all. The conditions Marx claimed to be necessary before communism could be established did not exist in Russia; they essentially skipped several steps in launching their coup and soon realized that they’d have to go back and do those steps – including inddustrialization and the creation of a strong educated and politicized labour force – before they could hope to establish real communism. Therefore, the official line was that they were “building socialism” so that real Communism could eventually be established. (Despite this, the Bolsheviks changed their name to the Communist Party soon after attaining power.)
The fact that there are two distinct kinds (or perhaps ‘degrees’ is a better term) causes considerable confusion when reading Leftist material or debating with Leftists in blogs or newsgroups. They simply claim to be “socialists” and we end to get a mental picture of people like Tony Blair, not Stalin or Mao. We think the Leftists are going to self-identify as Communists or Marxists. Well, sometimes they do but a lot of the time, they try to pass themselves off as mere “socialists”. In their hearts, they are frequently as totalitarian as Stalin but in their language, they are socialists. This doesn’t fool people with a strong knowledge of the history of communism but it is frequently successful in deluding those who have less familiarity with the history of Communism. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me if some of the people in the Democratic Party, especially in the lower ranks, have let themselves be conned into believing that their party is simply in favour of “social justice” and using government to “level the playing field”. I expect that many Democrats truly don’t realize that their party has the potential to be truly totalitarian.
I know many here would state this much more strongly. There is clearly an element of the PJM readership that is convinced that the Democrats are a full-on (stealth) Marxist party with an active and ongoing plan to establish Marxism in the United States. I am not quite ready to go that far but I do fear that it may be true on the basis of the evidence already amassed….

I’m so glad you articulated this. The enemy is subtle and sometimes we have to be subtle too if we are to stand to fight another day. We know how to articulate and educate on the issues that will gain us a hearing. While we do that, it is great to know that Mr. Pacepa is using his knowledge and experience to publish a hard hitting analysis that will open the ears of many more.
When there aren’t enough jobs to go around, people turn to socialistic policies. That was the dual mantra of OWS. We’re simply taking in too many immigrants each year and with no where to put them economically. Ironically, OWS considers any talk against immigrants as racist and so will doom themselves to prove it. That’s the typical Orwellian doublethink that infests all models of socialism. Just look at the paradises of Nicaragua and Cuba.

In the waning days of the CCCP when one wanted to point out the stupidity of another person you would call them comrade. This is a devastating form of marginalizing Marxists. However, for those of us not fooled four years ago, realizing John McCain weak but not dangerous, I fear these warnings being sent from many circles will be discarded by the masses; if not now, soon.
Simply winning at the ballot box this fall most likely will only postpone the inevitable. Barack Obama, Vann Jones, and the rest of the Chicago henchmen are a symptom of a much bigger problem. And I’m afraid more drastic measures, say circa 1773 must be on the horizon.
Even if we win, 50,000,000 Marxists (even if they do not recognize themselves as such) will remain in our midst – indoctrinated through a lifetime by leftist academia, humanism, government dependency, racism, even goonish union stewardship. Demographics are already beginning to dictate change.
I don’t want to sound defeatist. But the reality is, we will soon be outnumbered if we already aren’t. When politicians figured out they could buy a vote, no matter how good the original intent, our eventual demise as a responsible Republic was set. Immigration with no intent to assimiliate has made a bad situation even worse.
I fear for my children and what we are leaving them.
How right you are! The battlefront has been the media, certainly, but even more importantly, the educational system, starting with the universities and percolating down to the elementary years. That is where the battle really needs to be fought if there is to be any hope. Thank heavens for the really great private school my daughter attended with a tough minded econ instructor that set the kids straight on all these issues.
There are some people for whom “property rights” are dirty words. But the simple fact is that property rights are the objective content of freedom. Take them away, and you have despotism.
While I agree that property rights are important to achieving freedom, I don’t think they are the whole story.
There are other freedoms as well that are critical. One of the most important of those is the freedom to leave your country if you don’t like the way it is going. We take that for granted and rarely even consider it, thinking instead of freedom of speech, freedom of association, and so forth but tens of millions of citizens of Marxist countries, including the Soviet Union, Maoist China, Cuba, and North Korea lacked this freedom. They were essentially caged within their own country and at the risk of being shot for even approaching the border, let alone crossing it.
If you had all the property rights in the worldd but weren’t free to leave your country if it became oppressive to you, even just psychologically, I submit that you would not be truly free.

Yet they are fundamental.

Liberty is the Ownership of your own Life.
The definition of Ownership and Property is CONTROL. A thing that you own is within your control. A thing that is in someone else’s control is not your property.
Of Life, Liberty, and Property; Property is first. Liberty does not exist if your own Life is not your Property.
Life may exist without either Property or Liberty; but it ain’t worth livin’.

Because your timeline is way off. The Democrats at the highest levels have been aligned with Marxism since 1932. FDR’s “New Deal” was as much Marxism as he could shove down the American Peoples’ throat without starting a war that he would lose. The Democrats openly embraced Marxism in 1968 and ever since they’ve been pushing for Nationalized Health Care, which is either the “Holy Grail of Marxism” or the “Mass Grave of Socialism” depending on whether you’re on the giving or receiving end. As the Democrats moved left the Republicans followed in an orchestrated effort to attract the Democratic Party voters. Both major parties are now center-left either by ideology or by deed (or both). The TEA Party is reviled by the Democrats because it’s a direct repudiation of Marxism but the TEA Party is despised by the Republicans because it may hinder their leftward march to capture Democratic Party voters. Nobody in the “Ruling Class” wants to call attention to Marxism because the Democrats are Communists and the Republicans, slightly to the Right, are Socialists. Since we’re still a center-right country any discussion of our center-left government must be quashed. They are our Representatives aren’t they?
Simply great analysis of our current political morass and our slow descent into the marxist swamp. Especially appreciate your analysis of the “center-left” GOP-e RINOs who are NOT helping the cause of Freedom or Individual Liberty here in the USA!! And we certainly have an uphill battle when it comes to derailing the leftist academic/media/Holywood swamp! But, IMHO, Truth will eventually prevail, so better that we Conservatives get on the bankwagon ASAP and “spread the word,” as well as “fight the fight!!”

You’ve hit the nail on the head. The country’s slow descent into Politically Correct Progressivism did NOT happen in the 30 years since the 1960s. That was simply when it got its full head of steam and gained strength.
But, you’re off on your timeline too. By 1932, the seeds had been long planted, and the operation was well under way.
When Lenin realized that glorious communism would not sweep away capitalism naturally, soon after the Russian Revolution, he commissioned his friend and confidante, Willi Muenzenberg, to destroy American exceptionalism.
Muenzenberg, a genius at covertly manipulating opinions and influence (he cut his teeth in American with the Sacco and Vanzetti operation in Boston), created the operation that would grow to be Political Correctness.
He recruited Americans, I call them Willing Accomplices, to spread his message of hate-America-first.
His basic payload was “America is a racist, sexist, foreigner-hating, imperialist, capitalist hell-hole that must be changed.” And he paired that message with the creation of a chic attitude that only the smartest, most compassionate, with-it people were associated with the “America sucks” movement.
We see the results today.

By the 2008 election, I saw the parallels between Obama’s rise and Mussolini and knew that something wicked not only this way came, but had arrived on America’s doorstep with piles of dirty baggage in tow. At the same time began a still-ongoing dialogue with retired lobbyist, a (rich) progressive liberal and Marxist to the bottom of their political soul. It is like talking to a rock, really, yet it forces me to properly and factually defend my conservative position. I would request a more rigorous discussion of the ten planks of Marxism. The author describes them as being given by Marx in the Communist Manifesto. Is that the case or are they ten principles drawn from the CM? They sound way to modern to my ear.
The principles are present verbatim in my copy of “K. Marx and F. Engels”, Selected Works”, Vol I, pp. 126-127, Progress Publishers, Moscow 1969. Heh.
Which I bought in a second hand book store in San Francisco ~1974, since it looked like something I needed to get to know about immediately, if not sooner.

If the wording sounds overly modern, remember that the manifesto was originally written in German and translated to English later. This particular translation is apparently by Samuel Moore in conjunction with Englels (Marx was already dead) and was done in 1888, 40 years after the manifesto was written. The language may have been modernized at bit at that time.

We are fortunate that Obama and his minions are incompetent Marxists. Bill Ayers understood decades ago that the imposition of communism would require the liquidation or internment of 40 to 50 million Americans. A good Stalinist or Leninist would have recognized the Tea Party as a counter-revolutionary force and taken appropriate steps to crush it. And do you seriously think that a bunch of flea-bitten stoners and assorted clowns from OWS can impose their agenda on this country? A fair number of our national institutions have been hollowed out by covert Marxists (education, labor, and the media come to mind). But the fat parasites who inhabit these institutions became decadent before achieving full power. This election will see their agenda rolled back for at least a generation. The problem as I see it is that we won’t have the leadership necessary to eradicate Marxism root and branch from our institutions. Were going to have to fight this battle again in another generation. Useful idiots are nothing if not persistent.
How about a simple rule that would weed out a lot of the Marxists in our institutions of indoctrination? Require that no one can lecture in front of a class of students untless they have a minimum of two years experience working in the private stector or the armed forces?
I strongly suspect that anyone who has worked in the private sector or served in the military has enough of a grasp of reality that they themselves will have seen the lie that is Marxism. They will be realistic enough not to repeat the lies of Saul Alinsky, Howard Zinn, Bill Ayres and their disciples.
If students stop learning at the feet of the deluded, the next generation will have a much more solid grounding in reality. I don’t know if it is possible to salvage those who have already “drunk the kool-aid” but, at the very least, we should keep from poisoning those that are still awaiting their turn for an education.

I’ve been struggling with a way to counter leftists when they are friends, family, or people I buy supplies from – many I’ve known for years. It’s always awkward when things political are discussed. For example: Big Tobacco is paying to defeat a tax ($1/pack) on the CA ballot. No lefty will vote against the prop because they are against Big ‘Anything’ (Auto,Banks,Oil,Pharma, etc.).
My reply was to suggest it would be a mistake to give the state almost a billion $ when they’ll spend that and more in deficit. I would suggest an experiment where you give them a dollar and watch them spend a buck-and-a-half.

I am currently reading Dennis Prager’s book “Still the Best Hope” which explains the war between Leftism and Americanism (and also Islamism). Leftism is deeply embedded in America and many who espouse it do not know , literally, what they are talking about. I have been thinking about Hegel and the proposition that ideas seem to have a life of their own. Such seems to be the case with Leftism just sweeping away millions of people into its acceptance of this or that Leftist tenet: EG dressing like rag pickers to be “equal”, espousing moral relativism, or explaining actions in terms of only economic motive. We do indeed have a great fight on our hands.
I have been writing about how education is now being used as a weapon to obtain the classic socialist model of the mind-know little and even that must be approved and push emotion instead of reason. Medicare and Medicaid were part of LBJ’s Great Society. The Democrats did attempt to push a socialist medical plan as part of Social Security in 1938, but dropped it to ensure passage of SS. That said, the “innovations” of FRD’s court in the ’40s enabled the Great Society and all of the massive federal undertakings since.
The current crisis owes much to Bill Clinton’s administration, as well to Carter’s Community Reinvestment Act, but FDR did get the ball rolling, creating the modern system of government enabled lending for major home purchases.
One thing has become obvious … Obama id deliberately destroying the American economy; it’s not “Amateur” hour … it’s what Commies do.

But what makes the Marxists and their successors different from the preceding utopian communists is that when the utopians ran out of money for their social experiments, they stopped. The marxists et al run experiments that go beyond that point, continuing at gunpoint and putting dissenters in the grave.
When you advocate marxism, you’re making a choice and it’s a morally ugly choice. After a century of marxist “experiments” these people no longer deserve the benefit of the doubt, they have blood on their hands.

It has been said that Marxism works, just not on the human species. I would further say that it doesn’t work on any other species as well. What the lower intelligence species know by instinct — rejection of a self-destructive poison — we higher intelligence species are deceived by its seemingly quick benefits to our appetites, and in the end, it is nothing more than a Faustian bargain. It is usually those who have lived under the reality of Socialist Communism that can warn us and tell us about the self-destructive poison that it imposes on humanity. I’ve been around for a lot of what you speak of. Not all but quite a bit. I was around for McCarthy’s purge. He really believed in what he was doing but I think he got to obsessed and went overboard. Maybe not but people back then thought he had. I remember the Duck and Cover drills in grade school. The Cuban missile crisis while in junior High. Those were part of the reason I joined the Marine Corps when I was 17. Even as High School students we could see what was going on. One of my friends in High School pushed for a Russian Language class just so he could understand the enemy.
I think the main problem is that too many people here have the “it couldn’t happen here” attitude. They believe, rightly so, that we are the Best in the world. But where they go wrong is believing everyone else in the world feels the same way and all they need to do is watch us and learn. People just think that all the rest of the world just needs to get to know us and they will convert. Even those that know what kind of brain washing goes on in Dictatorial nations think that just to see us is to love us. Our greatness can overcome any brain washing.
All the while Communism (as well as Islamism) is creeping in. Start in the universities, teach it to those that will be teachers in our lower schools. Follow the rules of Alinsky and Marx. Ridicule anyone that would call attention to what is happening. I mean, that couldn’t ever happen here now could it? Those on the left that support it see themselves as the future Commissars. They think they would never be considered as just useful idiots, they are much too important for that. They think they will lead the people to their salvation through their beliefs in the system. It may take generations and yes, 40 or 50 million people may have to die but they will overcome.
They are using our laws against us even now. Freedoms of speech and assembly, freedom of religion,it goes on and on. By refusing to assimilate the Islamists are worming their way into our justice system. Using the freedom of religion they are saying they are being discriminated against by not being allowed to follow Sharia laws that are part of their religion. In Europe they have formed enclaves where others are afraid to enter. Here they are infiltrating our government as advisers or actual politicians, working to pass laws favorable to them. Working along with the leftists the same way the communists are. Right now, they are both fighting a common enemy, us. If they succeed, they will be at each other’s throats. But either way we lose.
As delia said, people really need to wake up.
The most powerful method used by the Left/Progressive/Marxist is that of co-opting our democratic process. They have indeed perfected the art of cultivating useful idiots and those who will vote for anything if promised enough of other people’s money. This is why the game was over once the Federal government was allowed to expand its powers beyond those enumerated in the constitution. If government were limited as intended, there would be nothing for the Marxists to compromise and take over – at least without the use of force. At some point – and we may be there right now – only civil disobedience against the over-reach of government will stop this insanity.

It’s already happening here. Check out Evergreen Co-ops of Cleveland. The city itself is investing in projects including an industrial laundry, solar power, and greenhouses. They claim their goal is to create jobs for people in Cleveland, selling to captive industries (hospitals, universities, etc.) and perhaps it will be successful. But to make the workers in the company also the owners eliminates the possibility that the workers can be exploited, and we all know what that is: socialism.
I strongly disagree with your point of view.
You will find few people who despise communism more than I do but I have no problem with the idea of co-operatives like the one you describe as long as they are voluntary. In other words, if people are free to leave them or join them – or, in the case of a business, to patronize them or not – I have no real problem with them.
By the same token, I would have had no problem with the Russians trying communism, including having collective farms, as long as people were free to leave the country or the collective farm on their own initiative. That, of course was NOT possible in the Soviet Union because these initiatives were established by coercion. People had to co-operate or they would face the consequence of slow death by starvation/overwork or fast death by a bullet in the brain. It is the coercion that is the central Evil in Communism.
I’ve actually lived in a housing co-op and consider that one of the best experiences of my life. But I was not under any obligation to join the co-op and was free to leave whenever I liked. I had many other choices about where to live but the co-op was a good choice for me at the time.
A voluntary co-op is basically a partnership. Nothing wrong with that that I can see.
It’s when co-op’s are touted as a defense against the evil-capitalists (as opposed to just being competitive with them) that trouble begins … as with confiscation of private property or a business to facilitate the co-op (as some “neighborhood” flower or vegetable gardens have been), or the co-ops becoming a “model” of “proper” conduct of business — which then leads to mandatory “joining” of the co-ops or “control” by the gov’t.

I am a walking testament to the deceptive power of covert Marxism. Growing up in the 60′s following that crowd was the “cool” thing to do. I loved the music, took the drugs, and came to believe that not agreeing with all that the Socialist left had to say made me a traitor and a sell out.
I am a well educated person with excellent reasoning and perception skills “normally” but the Socialist form of deception is so invasive and deceptive that people stop thinking for themselves and assume that the word masters know best and have your well being as their goal! Even under that spell I would wonder sometimes, “If Socialism is such a great thing then why must people deny what they are and trick others into following?” I now know the answer to that question, but it took me nearly 40 years to see through the deception!

I am with Mr Pacepa in all he says here. Also would like to add my disbelief at how many Americans today fail to see the Red disaster engulfing all around us.
Why are those born into freedom so blind. Why does the average U.S. citizen, not see the distruction that socialism brings. And the thing most precious thing it destroys, is the mind of the citizen. We now have useful idiots clamoring for their houses and school loans to be paid off. And grade school children singing the praises of Barack Hussein Obama, um, um, um. Much like the school children did in the Hitler youth camps. We have been indoctrinated to think socialism is good; normal and legal; as in constitutional.
The biggest defenders of freedom against the socialism are the people who came here from behind the Iron Curtain. Why? Because they see the same things. Demonizing of opponents. One sided news coverage. Group think. Censorship under the guise of “tolerance”, especially on college campuses. And when all else fails, they call the opposition vile names with the purpose of shutting down all discussion and discent. They organize hordes of protesters against Bank on America, Wall Street, and others. They terrorize Rush Limbaugh’s advertisers. They threaten Sarah Palin and Scott Walker. They trashed the Capital of Wisconsin. They coordinate a campaign against conservatives ala the JournOlisters as disclosed by The Daily Caller. They sue the opposition into oblivion which is terrorism via the legal system. They falsely accused Ted Stevens of corruption in order for his to lose his last election. They call the Tea Party people vile names.

At the risk of oversimplifying a complex question, I think the essence of the answer is that most Americans have no experience with socialism (of the Marxist variety). Most Americans have not travelled to Communist countries and even the ones who have done so generally made only brief visits and saw only what the host country wanted you to see. Even if you did a brief tour of Moscow or East Berlin or Beijing in Mao’s day, you would see very little and that little bit would have been carefully choreographed by the regime to present it in a favourable light. But only a small percentage of Americans had even that much contact with Marxism as it really was. The rest had to make due with what the MSM or schools had to say about it. Given that these institutions have long been in the pocket of the Left, they rarely said much negative about those regimes. Even the negatives that were voiced could easily be dismissed as the rantings of a rabid reactionary or words to that effect.
Defectors from the Marxist countries, while relatively rare, often made a point of keeping a low profile once they were here. The artistic types, like Baryshnikov, may have feared alienating new patrons or even feared being liquidated by the KGB or having family back home harmed. Remember, these regimes had no hesitation in threatening and harming your family if you defected. A few defectors, like Yuri Bezmenov, spoke up. His YouTube videos are sometimes cited here. But how many people have ever heard of this man? If you did, what impression did you get and how did you get it? I’m betting that if you mentioned him to a teacher or professor, the “educator” would not have known of him but would watch a few videos and soon dismiss him as a reactionary, fascist or dupe of the CIA.
There is and alsways has been substantial information about what the Communists have done since the early days after Lenin’s coup in 1917. Unfortunately, it’s largely been drowned out by the voices that hyped “socialism” as the cure for all of society’s ills.

This is a good article with the authority on one who has experienced Marxism first hand. The problem is that those who are aware of the infestation of the Democrats are the ones reading it. Those who ignorantly voted for Obama etc. never do read these types of informative articles. They will continue to wallow in the swamp of ignorance and know all about who’s who on “American Idol” but know nothing of the evil that the Democrats are working on America. Communism and its little cousin, socialism are attractive to many, but not because it is highly ethical and moral. These are merely Camouflage terms for something more base: Envy, sloth, fear of failure, self doubt and resentment toward God/nature for their own inherent mediocrity. Such people use the only power they have in a free society, the power of the vote, to enlist the power of government to accomplish for them, through theft, what they are incapable of achieving for themselves. There was a time in America when the mediocre accepted that fact as a part of their lives, and endeavored to do the best they could with what they had. But today, it is tantamount to a badge of honor.
Mr. Pacepa, if you have not read Ayn Rand, you will find a strong ally if you do and intellectual ammunition for your cause. She escaped the Soviet Union in the 1920′s, came to the United States, and devoted her life to saving this country from communism. Possibly more than anyone else, she probably prevented this country from turning socialist decades ago, with her novels Anthem, The Fountainhead, We The Living, and of course Atlas Shrugged, but she wrote and lectured extensively on the dangers of socialism and communism throughout the sixties and seventies, with essays collected in books such as “The New Left: the Anti-industrial Revolution”, “Capitalism: the Unknown Ideal”, and others.

Good for you. I’m not disputing the reality of communism, I’m doubting the credibility and history of this author. An opportunistic storyteller doesn’t stop being so just because he says a few things that you want to hear.
I just think that sensible people would look a bit more skeptically at a guy who did personally rather well out of one of the most obnoxious regimes in 20th century history, then “redeemed” himself by knowing when to jump, for his own benefit. Since then, some of his “intelligence” claims make the birther movement seem relatively well-founded.
I highly doubt that the American Intelligence community would grant Mr. Pacepa a new life if he was merely “storytelling.” Would Romanian officials use his information to execute Ceausescu if he was fabricating stories? Romanian life under Ceausescu was downright surreal and wacky not to say brutally unrelenting in its quest to transform the state into some sort of North Korean satellite. Someone or something needed to stop the bloodlust going on in Romania.
Opportunist? My grandparents were opportunists when they forever left their native countries for America for a better life and so did a host of others peoples. An added benefit to Mr. Pacepa’s defection was his use of intelligence to save his native country from utter destruction. An old truism rings true here: “By their fruit you shall know them.” If the motives of Mr. Pacepa were utter selfishness and deception, one would think it would be evident by now. I can’t seem to find the *bad fruit* evidence.

They’d use anything that fell to hand, actually. If all they’d had was a playboy magazine, they’d have used that. All they ultimately needed was a bullet, and that’s what really got the job done. It’s good to see that someone understands that there’s no such thing as “Socialism”; only unfinished communism.

Socialism is a path, not a destination (as Henry Reardon above seems to think).
It is not a type of government or economic system. It is not a steady state. It only exists in nations in transition from freedom to despotism. A “socialist” government only exists when the “progress” of communists is slowed, stymied, or stalled by those who wish to retain some liberty.
There are two paths from freedom to communism.
One is “socialism” — REGARDLESS of the speed at which a nation travels along the path of “socialism”.
The other is revolt, rebellion, and revolution — chaotic and bloody.

Amazingly, each “socialist” considers himself a part of this elite despite the impossible, paradoxical, oxymoronic, and historically inaccurate nature of that idea.
It is the ideology of the emotionally disturbed and morally degenerate.
It is an ideology from which man will never be totally free.
(This last goes hand in hand with the idea that — speaking of government positions — anyone who wants the job is ethically unqualified to have it.)
Anyway, “socialism” is a means of achieving communism, not in itself a type of political or governmental system.

Obama telegraphed his Marxist thinking during the 2008 campaign, when he proposed what in some East European countries was called “brigada”, in other words, government-forced “volunteerism”. He was proposing that all American high school and college students be required to spend a specific number of hours per week working for party-approved causes (he mentioned that they would choose the causes from a government-run website), or else they would be denied some socialist goodie, like their college financial aid.
I had an immediate flashback to a 1985 trip to Romania, when people in the bus I was riding in near Hunedoara suddenly started yelling. Outside the window was a field full of “volunteers” picking vegetables as a soldier with an Al Capone machine gun stood over them. (Yes, the cops and the soldiers had those Al Capone-style repeaters.) These were not prisoners. It was the time of year when the government shut people’s workplaces on a rotating basis and sent them out to the fields to perform “service”, or else. It was the same concept Obama was proposing, but just less slick in appearance.
With his “service” proposal and his proposal of a militarily trained civilian police force, Obama was basically leaving his fly open, and anyone aware enough could see there was basically a communist underneath his rhetoric. He never implemented these, but just the fact that he proposed them was telling.
Living in China taught me that Marxism was not an economic philosophy but rather a faith in the inevitability of the day when all people would think alike. When I wrote this article

Well, Soviet-bloc socialism was an unfree and impoverishing totalitarian system. But looking at the citizenry of Eastern Europe today compared with the rest of Europe (or America), I wouldn’t say the minds of the citizens of those former Soviet bloc have been “destroyed.” They seem to be much more sensible in many ways than the citizens of what formerly used to be called “free Europe.” Look at the immigration issue, for instance.

A prophecy made-to-order to self-fulfill, very much akin to JFK’s “perception is reality” (which it is, whenever reality happens to be the perception, as for example when a single pair of bullets from a cuckoo commie sent almost effortlessly the entire castle of Camelot and everything in it from Dallas all the way to dreamland).
But the truth is, the ’1%’ backs the vanguard of the left, has ever since that compulsory summer semester in 18th century Paris, the “Reign of Terror”.
The target of that alliance, let’s stay with the example and call it the bourgeoisie, is best understood via an examination of the movement of names into and out of the top and bottom quintiles of American wealth: at any point in roughly the last hundred years, half of both quintiles have been there less than five years.
This is the human spirit at the barricades battling entropy. The fight will exhaust you and me and the guy in the tree, but the entropy will extinguish the vision of humanity.
Mr. Pacepa has been mentioned numerous times over the years, in this archive of remarkably prescient (just glance down the column of titles, to see where the author was, when) weekly columns by –well, what to call him –political-economic historian? –author and financial writer J.R. Nyquist. These short columns take but a few minutes to read, and are usually built around some possibly important and probably obscure (thus the reason for the column) truths to be gleaned from the words of people such as Mr. Pacepa, as analyzed in the context of the conventional wisdoms.
Nyquist is very good on the topic of Mr. Pacepa’s piece here. Especially illuminating re Romanian Communism in particular are two columns written from interviews with a (well-known in the circle) Romanian political-cultural analyst: Enemies in the East: An Interview with Anca-Maria Cernea –with the Part Two following in the archive of columns.
One can’t help but note that the 20 years-ago fall of the soviet and satellite Communist parties occasioned a similar number of criminal prosecutions as the enormous ongoing financial crash of the west: almost zero.

When “Red Horizons” was serilized on Radio Free Europe in 1987 and 1988 and broadcasted into Romania, it aroused a massive interest among Romanians, along with empowering an oppressed people. No one can take away the victory that the Romanians themselves wrested from their oppressors.
Shortly after the Romanian revolution, the Romanian press, Adevarul, even attributed gratitude to Pacepa’s “Red Horizons” stating that it was a major contributor to Romania’s revolution.
What he’s saying, i think, is that on the grounds that Communism has poisoned Mr. Pacepa’s mind, Mr. Pacepa’s warning that Communism poisons minds cannot be credible.
IOW, another case of ‘who you gonna believe, me, or your own eyes?’ –

We need only ask the question: the teacher will appear.

Progressive tax (whether on income or on spending) is indeed just. Likewise certain limitation of inheritance is good too. Without such limitations we will soon end up with new princes and royal families. I am not against reasonable inheritance as assuring the survival and comfort of one’s children is one of the main motives for wealth creation.
As for state ownership of business and credit, that’s an entirely different story. I see nothing positive in that.

Closing loopholes available only to wealthy people may be just, but so called “progressive” taxes are most definitely unjust. No person should be forced to pay a higher tax rate than any other person. Paying the same rate will collect much more wealth from the rich person and nobody in government would be allowed the power to decide what is the right percentage for each person to pay. ABO2012

Progressive tax is unequal taxation – higher taxation for some people (middle class) and lower or no taxation for other people (proletariat class) – an unequal confiscation of the fruit of labor – and therefore unjust. Progressive taxation is the key to self-serving Marxist tyranny.

Possession of property – the fruit of labor – is a natural God-given right of the laborer – not the State – and not the government-dependent so-called proletariat.

In Orwellian fashion new Marxist Princes and Marxist Royal Families arise under a Marxist system of excessive taxation – including inheritance taxes. Government power derives from collectivization (via excessive taxation) of the people’s property. When government – a small group of other people after all – owns or controls vast amounts of the people’s property it is thereby empowered to employ people to carry out its self-serving desires. Excessive collectivization of property into the hands of a few, i.e.: into the hands of self-serving Marxist-type government, leads to excessive government power; thus Karl Marx advocated the abolition of private property as a means to concentrate property, and thereby power, into the hands of a few.

Such a vital and enlightening article (Say No to Socialism) should be a wake-up call for each and every reader to invest time sharing the information regarding the subject material presented, the author (Ion Mihai Pacepa) and the source (PJ Media). . . . via local, regional and state on-line community news outlets OR via posts with syndicated blogging sites OR via national websites. The future path of our republic as envisioned by our forefathers is worth standing up for and defending via well-grounded, factual and constitutional points of view.
And, although such a struggle for the hearts, minds and souls of our fellow countrymen may be on a path that will be an arduous challenge to endure for many, many years to come, education is truly a perpetual process . . . for life.

As a person who hails from the same country as you, who has lived through the same events as you–I left the country in 1988–I salute you and welcome your presence at PJM.
However, I have to disagree with you on a few points, relating to the following statements:

There was no “undercover Marxism” in Romania while I lived and was schooled there. Marxist-Leninism was alive and well, preached and tought in every school and university. For a short while, Ceausescu’s ideologues invented the concept of a “multilaterally-developed socialist republic” to mitigate the promises of a communist dreamland that never came to pass and having to deal with a failed country of constant penury,disfunction,and terror. That socialist republic was supposed to be just a small “correction” of policy on the way to the Communist Workers’ Paradise,a huge lie, of course, since there never was anything “socialist” in the classical sense in Romania.
I suspect what you consider Ceausescu’s “undercover Marxism”is his embrace of
nationalism after the soviet invasion of Prague,a smokescreen for the naives in the West and the fascists at home.
Be convinced, Mr Pacepa, that in all my schooling and employment years back home Marxist-Leninism was always the philosophical doctrine, improved by “Ceaushism,” the “multi” doctrine.
Finally,this statement of yours blew my American but Romanian/Orwellian-trained mind away:

You should learn the goodness and wisdom of forgiveness, just as Mr. Pacepa has learned the goodness and wisdom of confession and turning away from evil. It is far better that Mr. Pacepa is now a defender of human liberty than its Marxist enemy.
It’s not for me to forgive Pacepa. Neither is your sanctimonious reminder. It belongs only to all of those who were harmed by him, and only to them.

from paragraph 3 – “the United States, the world’s headquarters of democracy…”
America has 3 founding fathers – John Adams, Benjamin Rush, & James Madison – warned future generations against becoming a democracy. We pledge, unthinkingly, to the “republic for which it stands” but hardly recognize what a republic, a constitutional republic, is, let alone what a true democracy is, let alone the differences between the two. Having come from a nation w/ a socialist form of government to the USA in the early 80′s when the media here was crying “gridlock, gridlock” at the election of a Republican to White House & the Dems to house & senate, I had to actually read the constitution to realize that “Gridlock” was the media’s mocking label for the beautiful “Checks and Balances”. When I saw this, and also watched a PBS documentary by a British Historian on the 1st democracy in History – Greece – I understood the beauty of a Republic … and that a true Democracy was one small step shy of socialism.
One cannot argue from a solid foundation against the ills of the democratic party policies if one believes this nation is fundamentally a democracy. You cannot pledge allegiance “to the Republic for which it stands” when you honestly believe, and actually thus give allegiance to, a democracy.

The Obama’s reelection is an indication that the USA has slipped into a spiral of “progressism” (Marxism-euphemistically), which in time will end into a Gulag type of society, Cuba-North Core’s style. Situation that can only be reversed if God himself offer a helping hand to the Uncle Sam.
