Berlusconi for President
February 2nd, 2010 - 3:01 pm
Silvio Berlusconi, in Jerusalem to sign an agreement with Israel, promised full support for the Iranian opposition, and noted that Iran has a leader “who reminds us of evil people from the past.” Berlusconi has previously compared Ahmadinejad with Hitler.
Would that other Western leaders understood that support for democratic revolution in Iran is the best available option. Meanwhile crackpot realists purport to analyze our “options” without even mentioning it. For them, it’s either “make a deal” or prepare to go to war. Tom Paine stirs restively in his grave…

“Would that other Western leaders understood that support for democratic revolution in Iran is the best available option.”
Sigh. Would that allot of things could be made clear to The One. Elections have consequences; some of those consequences can be catastrophic. I don’t know which is worse for America, the Iranian Bomb or the President’s budget.
Rancher: i suppose it all depends on where the bomb hits…
Tom Payne is very much alive. Tom Paine, however, calls from his grave to freedom lovers everywhere
tks, Dan D. fixed it.
Michael, try this on for size. The US, thanks to its dithering, (just like Anthony Eden, who was the British Prime Minister during the 1956 Suez Crisis) is relegated to the sidelines.
The UN is hollowed out by the exit of these countries: Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, the Balkan Countries, East European countries, the Baltics, South Korea, Taiwain (just to name a few).
The Alliance of Democracies is comprised of 3 groups. The parts of the old British Empire listed who don’t need to be bailed out when it comes to openness. Those parts of Central and Eastern Europe which were behind the Iron Curtain, joined by those countries which have
endless pain waiting for them if they stay in the EU. Lastly, those economies which in the Pacific Rim are in the most robust shape.
These 3 groups would sign off on continental preparatory regimes for those parts of South America, Africa and Asia, which need them.
Berlusconi would be in a position of leadership in the second group of the Alliance
of Democracies.
All talk. Italy & Iran are major trading partners.
Italian-Iranian trade thrives, supports Tehran’s nuclear program
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report January 31, 2010, http://www.debka.com/article/8574/
Is there English text anywhere mentioning Berlusconi’s pledge to support the Iranian opposition? I’m interested in the language used and if he gave any specifics.
A modest proposal, that headline.
Not so fast. There is also this report to consider from the semi-reliable Debka:
“Israel has no bigger friend,” said prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu of Silvio Berlusconi, who begins an official visit to Israel with half a dozen ministers Monday, Feb. 1. According to the fat trade contracts current with Tehran, Italy would be better described as “Iran’s biggest friend” – at least, in Europe, and supplier of key components for its nuclear and space programs, as well tunneling equipment and army trucks.
Michael,
It appears that in Europe, Politics and Business are different planets. In fact, while Berlusconi (whom I am completely against) is talking from one side of his mouth, the Italian companies are having a brisk business helping the gas and oil projects in Iran. I don’t know if you heard, today, German companies said that even if they want to leave Iran (to comply with sanctions) it will be several years before they severe their relation with their Iranian counter parts, completely. They also have warned the German government, that if they leave Iran, they would leave a profitable market to the competition (Italian, Chinese, …companies!). By the way Siemens, who announced leaving Iran, is now helping Iran through third countries (like Dubai and other Gulf sheikh-doms). We live in a complicated world! and unfortunately Iranians should not hold their breath for these empty and photo-op gestures.
Mr. Berlusconi has maintained his tough commitment and mightily to support Israel State, to fight a revival of anti-Semitism in Europe and his strong commitment to the war on terror, and to support democracy and freedom.
Mr. Berlusconi has continually maintained his tough commitment and mightily to fight bloodthirsty dictatorships in the Middle East that wants to acquire nuclear weapons and endanger the whole world.
Mr. Berlusconi is regarded as a staunch ally of the Jewish state. He has repeatedly spoken out against the dangers of Holocaust denial, and publicly defended Israel’s actions against the terrorist organizations in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria as a justified actions.
Mr. Berlusconi has called Israel time and again in the biggest only example of democracy and liberty in the Middle East.
Indeed, Mr. Berlusconi is a very rare and a very courageous man in the West, as usual distinguish between his friends and his enemies. Unfortunately, today the vast majority of the Western leaders indeed they lack to Mr. Berlusconi’s wisdom and courage. God bless him.
