The failure to win the Olympic Games is the result of a combination of sex, lies, and an intelligence failure. So I oiled up the ouija board and, after three failed efforts, contacted my old friend, the late James Jesus Angleton, the legendary former chief of CIA counterintelligence. JJA: Sorry, I was sleeping. Didn’t hear your earlier calls.
ML: It’s hard for me to figure out what time it is where you are…
JJA: Hard for me, too, frankly. How do you measure the passage of time in eternity? We don’t have very organized schedules.
ML: Either do I.
JJA: Hah! But that’s different. You’ll see. So what’s up?
ML: The big news around here is that “Chicago” was dissed by the International Olympic Committee in Copenhagen. Most people assumed that President Obama wouldn’t have gone there unless he believed we were going to win . Then, after Chicago was thrown out in the first round, a lot of people started to say that he knew it was going to be tough, and only went because he thought his personal charm would turn it around.
JJA: Before the results were in, it sure sounded as if the folks in the White House thought it was in the bag for Chicago, didn’t it?
ML: It did, but then they might have been trying to put the best face on a tough situation.
JJA: To be sure, to be sure. However, if you were a counterintelligence person you’d look at it differently.
ML: No doubt I would. But then, I’d look at the handsome guy in the mirror differently, too.
JJA: Very droll. But let’s look at how these bids are won, shall we? There’s a very big committee, more than a hundred strong, and a smaller executive committee. These are the players, they make the decisions. They’re like a government or a big corporation, let’s say. If you want such an organization to award you a contract, how do you go about it?
ML: I lobby.
JJA: Yes, you lobby. And you corrupt, too. You do favors, you promise even more favors if you win, and in short you do the same things that an intelligence service’s case officer does when he recruits agents. This process is well known in Chicago.
ML: No kidding!
JJA: I don’t kid. This is serious stuff. So let’s assume that, one way or another, the Chicago committee (call it CC for short) was on good terms with many of the decision-makers on the IOC.
ML: No doubt.
JJA: OK. I can easily imagine one of these gentlemen (there are very few women on the IOC) telling one of the CC people, “we need to sweeten the pot, if you’ll put up another bit of money, it’ll be in the bag.” And I can imagine the CC sweetening the pot, and the gentleman in question assuring them it was now in the bag.
ML: And on that basis, the president would fly to Copenhagen to get the credit.
JJA: Even as any of us would. Except someone who knew enough to understand the temptations to which the IOC guys were being subjected.
ML: Such as?
I personally thought that there was only a 50/50 Chicago would get the Olympic games. It just did not seem like Barack Obama had it in the bag. I also don’t think anyone significant within the decision making process directly lied to him. At the very most, they may have slightly misled the president’s representatives. This is my theory: Obama is a stark raving narcissistic whack job. He is not wrapped very tight. Obama travelled to Copenhagen believing his very presence would be enough to sway the judges. He is truly full of himself. In many respects, Obama is similar to Woodrow wilson who literally was convinced that God selected him to lead the American people to something of a secular utopia.

I think that the judges were secretely thrilled to rain on his parade, to cut him down to size. Imagine the arrogance of this narcissist thinking that his mere presence could overwhelm anyone just because he showed up, I mean, who the hell does he think he is? I would have had the same reaction – give him a nice kick to that over-inflated ego.

But this manipulation of the EU nations egos was contrary to the origin EU integration agendas.
This is why France and Germany, that were the motor (and still are) of the EU organisation, couldn’t, but opposed to the american decision, and decided to not participate into Irak war, which wasn’t the urgent war to launch, but still opted for Afghanistan though, where problems were evident with Talebani training terrorists.
Though France participated to the first Irak war, we had not more interest in “desert storm” operation though, but circonstances were different, there was not such a competion of influences in EU, Berlin wall just fall down, Russia was ruined… and Bush father was more diplomat.

Obama’s effort to win the bid could not override the politics between the USOC and the IOC. The White House took the easy way out and did not play hardball with the financial realities of the IOC demands. But the final blame goes to the USOC.

It’s funny that you mention this; I was at work when the announcement that Rio received the honors for the 2016 olympics and said the very same thing. Where would the athletes, party fans, and corrupt IOC officials rather go to whore around, Chicago or Rio. The answer is obvious.

Let’s see now. Obama had just enraged Europeans by abandoning the anti-missile defense system, leaving all of Europe vunerable to medium range nuclear tipped missiles which Iran is now constructing. He further enraged Europeans by insisting that there would be no sanctions against Iran for their nuclear weapon program, but that he would just talk to them, one on one and convince them not to proceed.
In its wee demo last winter, Russia convincingly demonstrated that Russia can shut off one natural gas pipeline valve in winter, and bring all of Europe to their knees, and could easily put out of commission another nearby gas pipeline which would cut off for a long long time, 40% of the natural gas that Europe is completely dependent on for fuel. (France, of course, gets 80% of their electricity from nuclear plants, so is way ahead of this game)
Did I mention that Obama has been cozying up to Russia? Now, all of Europe is at the whims of Russia. With a friend like Obama, no one in Europe needs any enemies.

Landowners resort to assassins and death squads to drive and intimidate landless populations from their land. Other cases of agrarian human rights violations involve government takings, such as for various hydroelectric operations across Brazil. Wealthy international corporations have enormous bargaining power and often refuse to remunerate displaced populations upon the flooding of their ancestral homes. Further agrarian violence arises from smugglers of exotic animals, wood, and other minerals from extracting contraband from forest or agrarian areas.

I think the other nations didnt so much “have it in” for any US city, but I do feel that the Chicago bid had too “black” a feel to it: Michelle, Oprah, the “Sweet Home Chicago” blues theme music et al. I’m sure the various nations ranging from Poland, Ukraine, and Czechoslovakia, in Eastern Europe, India, and Southeast Asia, not to mention the Central (non-South American) and African countries whose descendants have played just as big if not a bigger more positive role in modern Chicago (and getting fat remittences to boot) felt slighted and responded in kind.
