1. Search for more victims of HIV-infected man charged with raping toddler, girl
Houston police are searching for more possible victims of a man who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl and a 23-month-old girl, infecting them both with HIV.
David R. Wilson, 33, is charged with sexual assault of a child and super aggravated sexual assault of a child. He could face more charges, since it’s a crime for any HIV-positive person to have sex with an uninformed partner.
According to charging documents, family members brought the toddler to Memorial Hermann in November 2013, where doctors discovered a growth on her genitals. Test results came back positive for HIV, herpes and chlamydia.
A doctor told investigators the toddler “had to have been sexually assaulted as evidenced by the presence of three sexually transmitted diseases.”
Doctors performed reconstructive surgery on her because of damage from infection.

2. Man Dug Up Corpses Of 29 Little Girls For Twisted Fantasies — ‘Not Fit For Trial’ [Warning: Disturbing Footage]
A man who was discovered to have stolen the bodies of at least 29 little girls from their graves in order to fulfill his disturbing fantasies will not stand trial.
Russian police found the mummified remains of 29 girls at the home of Anatoly Moskvin, 46, in 2011. Three years after Moskvin was arrested, a judge decided this week that he will not have to stand trial for his crimes, declaring him mentally unfit
And it seems the prosecution agrees, as a spokesperson stated, “After three years of monitoring him in a psychiatric clinic it is absolutely clear that Moskvin is not mentally fit for trial. He will therefore be kept for psychiatric treatment at the clinic.”
…
Moskvin says that he dressed them up and threw birthday parties for them, obviously in order to fulfill some twisted obsession. He traces his ghoulish fantasies back to the age of 12, when he says he came across a funeral procession, where he was forced to kiss the face of the dead, who happened to be an 11-year-old girl. He says that shortly after that, he developed an interest in the occult.
…
Strangely enough, at the time of his arrest, Moskvin was a respected historian who reportedly speaks 13 languages, and was described as a “genius” by many.

3. Joel B. Pollak: Extremists Like Ezra Klein Shouldn’t Offer Sex Advice
Though he acknowledges that the law creates “a haze of fear and confusion” around sex, Klein says that is really a good thing: “everyday sexual practices on college campuses need to be upended, and men need to feel a cold spike of fear when they begin a sexual encounter.”
A “cold spike of fear.” We are not talking about some kinky BDSM fantasy. We are talking about the most precious, exciting, intimate moment a loving couple can share.
It would be too easy to invoke the stereotype of the beta-male liberal–afraid of sex, afraid of football, afraid of adulthood.
Suffice it to say that Klein has joined those, left and right, who wish to use the state to intrude into personal lives. He is a totalitarian, and proud of it.

14. Rabbi Freundel’s synagogue responds to arrest on voyeurism charges
Washington’s Kesher Israel is emerging on Sunday from a long four-day stretch of holiday and Shabbat, back to dealing with the reality of news about the synagogue’s rabbi, Barry Freundel, who was arrested on voyeurism charges after allegedly peeping on women at the mikveh. For Orthodox members of the synagogue, it has been a forced, but welcome, detachment from TV news and online updates on the case that has brought local and national attention to their synagogue.
The issue was discussed, however, in between prayers and services during the holiday and weekend and was addressed only once from the bimah, when the synagogue’s president Elanit Jakabovics delivered a heartfelt speech during Thursday’s morning service.
“There are no words to describe the shock, devastation and heartbreak we are feeling at this moment,” Jakabovics told congregants, in a speech that did not mention Freundel by name even once.
15. Israeli Rabbinate to review conversions performed by ‘peeping’ D.C. rabbi
Should the Chief Rabbinate reach the conclusion that conversions performed by Freundel are no longer valid, sources said, the matter would be addressed with the rabbinical court responsible for the Washington D.C. area where the ousted rabbi served. Only those conversions performed during the period when Freundel allegedly had hidden cameras installed in the shower stalls near the synagogue’s mikveh, or ritual bath, would be reviewed, they added, noting that the validity of those performed before was not in question.

16. Bethany Mandel, related: A bill of rights for Jewish converts
I am one of Rabbi Barry Freundel’s converts. He was my sponsoring rabbi and is the first signature on my RCA conversion documents. For a long time, I’ve been angry about my conversion, conversion in general and how I have been treated in the Jewish community post-conversion. I’ve been hesitant to speak out because I was afraid of rocking the boat, which holds not only myself, but also my husband and child(ren). Given this scandal, which has rocked my whole world, including my conversion boat, I’m no longer afraid to speak my mind.
On Facebook:
17. Kosher and Non-Kosher Voyeurism By Rabbi Shmuley Boteach
Now comes the painful news that a well-known Rabbi in the nation’s capital was using other men’s wives as his webcam girls. The pain of the victims is unimaginable as is the culprit’s family. Women go to the mikveh (Jewish ritual immersion bath) to feel spiritually and physically rejuvenated. They do not go to feel dirty. The mikveh is a place of female sanctity. It has been shockingly violated.
Few stories over the past years have been as serious with regards to male religious violation of women and action is required. A comprehensive review of male access to the female mikveh must be undertaken so that all women feel and know that the mikveh is an inviolable place of religious privacy and spiritual security. This sorrowful story also highlights the need to accelerate the establishment of female Halakhic (Jewish legal) authorities so that women can increasingly regulate private feminine Jewish matters.

19. Why I visit prostitutes
Twenty years ago, my girlfriend died. At the same time, my career was taking off, demanding more time and energy. When I came out of mourning, I was an engineer in Silicon Valley entering the first dot-com boom, and the odds of finding love were long. Santa Clara County was known for having the highest ratio of single men to single women in the country. And let’s face it, tech workers are not the most socially adept.
Instead of seeking love, I sought success. I helped found a company in 1997, then helped build it to something we sold more than a decade later. In the time others might spend pursuing a relationship, I created a successful enterprise. I tried some popular dating sites, but to little success. To satisfy my physical needs, I turned to professionals.
The late ’90s were a bad time to find quality sex workers. Sometimes, I might call an “Escort Service” from the yellow pages, and if I was lucky, the person I met was halfway close to what was described. Once, I found I had been robbed by the girl. Unluckier patrons had much worse experiences.
…
Around that time, I tried Match.com and Yahoo personals. I even signed up for a local dating service that set me up on a couple of dates, but they never turned into second dates. The personal ads would get some interest and some talk, but Silicon Valley is a women’s market — men have to work hard to stand out. I preferred pouring my time and energy into my job.
20. The sex crimes I kept secret
At the Daily Beast:
22. 7 Indiana Women Found Dead, Man Arrested
Darren Deon Vann has been identified as the suspected killer of at least seven women found dead in northwest Indiana this weekend. Vann, 43, will be charged with murder by strangulation of 19-year-old Afrika Hardy at a Motel 6 in Hammond, Indiana. Vann is a convicted sex offender who moved from Austin, Texas to Gary, Indiana in 2004.
Hammond Chief of Police John Doughty said Vann arranged to meet a prostitute at the Motel 6 on Friday. When the madam tried and failed to reach Hardy at the hotel, she called police. At the hotel, cops discovered Hardy’s body and then executed a warrant on a home thanks to the phone number provided to the madam. Police said Vann immediately confessed to killing Hardy and then gave the locations of six homicide victims in Gary.
23. The West’s Female-Genital Mutilation Wake-Up Call
New figures from the U.K. are finally revealing the true extent of female genital mutilation: In just six months, nearly 2,000 women and girls have been treated by Britain’s National Health Service after undergoing the brutal procedure.
And with these statistics, which have been made available for the first time, hiding from the issue is no longer an option for Britain and the U.S.—and President Obama’s pledge to eradicate this abuse has never been more pressing.
While FGM—the process of removing either parts or the entirety of the external female genitalia—has been a federal offense in the U.S. since 1996, a dearth of tangible data has meant years of Western authorities theorizing on the extent of (and solution to) the problem—with few results. Though the past year has seen a number of legislative steps being taken toward both identifying victims and punishing perpetrators, these calls to action have largely occurred on paper, and convictions remain nonexistent.

‘At first I hated him,’ Knight told the group at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School. ‘But I went through therapy and realized it hadn’t been his fault. He had a disease.’

31. The REAL face of King Tut: Pharaoh had girlish hips, a club foot and buck teeth according to ‘virtual autopsy’ that also revealed his parents were brother and sister
A ‘virtual autopsy’, composed of more than 2,000 computer scans, was carried out in tandem with a genetic analysis of Tutankhamun’s family, which supports evidence that his parents were brother and sister.
The scientists believe that this left him with physical impairments triggered by hormonal imbalances. And his family history could also have led to his premature death in his late teens.
…
Earlier this year, egyptologists from the American University in Cairo shed light on some of the bizarre burial rituals discovered in the tomb, including the fact the king’s penis was embalmed at a 90-degree angle – the only mummy to have ever been found with this feature.
They claimed that this may have been carried out on purpose to make the king appear like Osiris, the god of the underworld, in an attempt to frighten religious revolutionaries.
At the time of his death in 1323 BC, the father of the teenage Egyptian king was said to be leading a religious revolution in the country.
It is believed Akhenaten wanted to destroy the belief in the Egyptian gods and instead worship a sun disc called the Aten.
Tutanhkhamun was trying to tackle this revolution when he was believed to have broken his leg and died from an infection in the wound. DNA analysis in 2010 also found traces of malaria in his system.
During mummification a decision was made to not only embalm the erect penis, but also to cover the king’s body in black liquid – similar in colour to the skin of Osiris – and remove his heart.

The classified service website Backpage.com has come under renewed scrutiny over its use by sex offenders just as it fights a lawsuit in the supreme court.
Police in Indiana said Darren Vann, a registered sex offender suspected of multiple murders, met his latest alleged victim through Backpage.
Vann, 43, was charged on Monday with murdering Afrikka Hardy, 19, who was found strangled at a motel in Hammond, near Chicago. The former marine has confessed to killing seven women and has hinted at more victims over a 20-year span, police said.
The investigation renewed controversy over Backpage as the US supreme court in Washington prepared to hear arguments on Tuesday in a case filed by three sex trafficking victims who say the website helps promote child exploitation.

6. Women Describe How Top D.C. Rabbi Allegedly Spied on Them in the Nude
Bethany Mandel said in a phone interview that she did a practice dunk while converting in 2011. She claims Freundel told her that he required practice dunks specifically to avoid rabbis seeing women naked during the conversion process. Freundel had created the practice dunks because of an experience with a prior convert, according to Mandel. That woman, Mandel said, in nervousness over the completion of her conversion, “stood up and turned around, and like full-frontal exposed herself to the rabbis… he wanted to do practice dunks so that people wouldn’t expose themselves on mikvah day.”
Even after Freundel’s arrest, most of the women interviewed expressed uncertainty about whether they were targets of the alleged voyeurism. Several said they’d felt the practice dunks were a helpful part of the conversion process—including Mandel.

Since its release, Transmormon has racked up a number of awards, including the Artistic Vision Award at the 2014 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. In the process, 25-year-old Hayward has become a transgender poster child, at least to Mormons. But she is a little surprised by the role. “I’m not trying to break any social norms. I’m not trying to break any walls or do anything they don’t understand.”
Hayward doesn’t mean that with a false sense of modesty. Nor is she taking the rhetorical strategy of playing down how dramatic a push for social change is by making it seem more familiar. She really just wants to be an old-fashioned girl. “I’m saying there is something wrong on the outside, fix it, and I will be a conforming member of society,” she says. After years of struggling to articulate that she was transgender, she is more than happy to have people recognize her as a woman—and leave it at that.

21. Ashley E. McGuire: Brittany Maynard and the Trouble With Suicide
But what makes her suicide any different from that of Robin Williams? He faced a terminal diagnosis too, one that involves years of suffering and bodily unraveling, one for which there is no cure. Our society, increasingly steeped in a culture of death, doesn’t really have a good answer to the swelling tide of social acceptance for what the pro-suicide movement like to euphemize as “death with dignity.”
No doubt, we all owe Maynard our compassion. It’s hard to fathom the suffering of a 29 year-old newlywed faced with terminal cancer. As she said to People, “Dan and I have given up our dreams of having a family. My mother is soon to lose her only child. We can all agree that no parent should bury their child.” As a 29 year-old beginning my own family, her story hits especially close to home.
But society’s big mistake is in believing that suicide can be a compassionate or dignified choice. Suicide is suicide. There is nothing that can change that. You can make it legal. You can make it seem less horrible by using needles instead of some rope and a chair or a gun. You can put a beautiful woman on the cover of a celebrity magazine as a spokeswoman. But it’s still suicide, and the reality is that anyone who commits suicide, or even ponders it, is suffering deeply.
22. R.J. Moeller: ‘Fury’ and The Good War
Fury is not only a superbly directed war/action drama, it is one of the first full-length candid looks at what it might have been like to “survive” almost the entire length of the war. In nearly every frame, the audience can feel the gut-wrenching experiences of Wardaddy and his men. The fact that they were fighting an enemy they knew to be evil did not make it any easier when your best friend and fellow tank crew member has his face literally blown off of his body in front of you. The things these men went through were horrific and devastating, as well as heroic and important.
Fury, like memorable scenes from other impressive WWII films, takes us deeper into the indelible psychological and emotional scars the warriors of America’s “Greatest Generation” endured. But, unlike the anti-war Vietnam era movies, one does not leave the theater with disillusionment and animosity toward our government or war in general. If anything, I left Fury with an even greater appreciation for the sacrifices made by guys like my grandpa (a B-24 bomber pilot).
23. Mark Tapson: Is Virginity Making a Comeback?
It doesn’t help that American pop culture is relentlessly sexualized. The media have elevated as our young daughters’ most influential role models—you know who they are: celebs who pose before giant neon signs proclaiming them “FEMINIST,” but are really poster models for rampant sluttiness.
Yet despite (or perhaps because of) the best efforts of the entertainment biz to put sex front and center in our children’s consciousness, evidence seems to point to a newfound appreciation for virginity. Teens seem to be waiting longer to have sex than they did in the recent past, for example. Thanks in part to a handful of non-conforming celebrities like Jessica Simpson, Adriana Lima, and the Jonas Brothers, taking pride in preserving oneself for marriage has gained acceptance, and public expressions like purity rings have boomed in popularity. This is contributing, thankfully, to sharply declining teen birth and teen pregnancy rates. All of which suggests that American girls are increasingly rejecting the sex-soaked Siren of popular culture and embracing the notion that virginity is to be guarded until the right moment and given for the right reasons.
