Just watched "Bladerunner" again. In it, there is a hotel where one of the characters lives in what is the real world Bradbury Building. This was something of a discrete shoutout to Ray Bradbury.

It made me think of this article, however, because in the movie the building was horribly run down, leaky, and just a mess. Even the character's room was shabby and full of toys (Ray Bradbury's writing study was said to be full of toys and things that he said fired his imagination and gave him story ideas, though it wasn't shabby). So, in keeping with this article, 90%+ of the building was junk, save for that one room.

Football, Hockey, Racing, and Justified. The only reason I watch television. Cancelled our local news rag, the birds quit crapping on the paper in the bottom of the cage because they found it offensive to be so close to rubbish. Radio? Sirius satellite radio, channels 5 and 6. I get my news from internet sources I select, not some liberal propagandist.

Good science fiction died when America (and the West) lost its optimism. To read good sci-fi, you have to reach way back to Jules Verne then read forward to Isaac Asimov's work from the 40's and 50's. Arthur C Clarke was an outlier still writing good stuff into the 60's.

My estimate of pop-media, like TV or magazines, is that 95-99% of it is trash.

The actual attribution is from the Science Fiction world -

Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap.

Pohl's Addendum: Sturgeon is an Optimist.

The best thing about this article was the "Honest Trailers" link. Lots of funny stuff there.

Science fiction has edged up to the 99 percentile as writers are still trying to scratch their heads and figure out what Heinlein did before WW II or realize they never will and fall back on a SyFy version of "The World According to Garp."

The honest ones write for Dr. Who.

science fiction headed for the 99th when it became sci-fi (or worse scy fy) and became lumped with fantasy. true science fiction is as far from fantasy as literature can be.
