What the ... did I just read? Maybe the reason why the search for freedom through sex is doomed to failure is because she's why overanalyzing. Just a thought.

I might also mention that you can't free your human self by miring yourself in something that completely chains you to the animal inside us all, but that would likely be the Christian impulse inside my rational mind saying that.

The advertising directive "Sex Sells" has a great deal to do with the carnal cesspool we all, whether we want to or not, must swim through every day.

To begin to explain what has happened to our culture we - as always - have to go back to the 1960s. An ad for shaving cream appeared on TV, a sexy blond Swedish girl watching a man shave and cooing, in a sultry alto voice, "Men, take it off. Take it all off". This ad, innocent by today's standards, was a sensation and received lots of press because of it's fine visuals and message of ravenous female sexuality that hadn't been seen before. It opened the door to sex becoming THE major force in TV advertising and therefore a subliminal message began to invade our lives. Sex, sex, sex - everywhere -all the time.

The publication of The Joy of Sex was another benchmark and an instant best seller. Other books followed; one was written by someone calling herself The Happy Hooker. And then of course there were the sexually explicit mainstream films and products like "edible panties". This was happening at the same time drug use became totally acceptable, another nail driven into the coffin of what had been considered normal behavior by most but considered "repressive" among the cultural elite.

If I'm not mistaken Ms. Paglia's book was published in the 1980s at around the same time Robert Mapplethorp's grotesque photos of gay eroticism became controversial - and both put an intellectual veneer over any and all sexual behavior - and both made lots of money. SEX SELLS.

Get rid of your tv and use AdBlock on the net. Viola! No more swimming in the cesspool!

I'm afraid it's not really that simple. Suppose you do get rid of your TV, even put AdBlock on the internet. It will still propagate itself despite that. And despite what some people might say, no, books are not a good alternative to TV, as even they produce trash. Heck, the depravity of the French Revolution was STARTED by books (specifically, Emile, Confessions, and Of Human Nature by Rousseau. Heck, Marquis de Sade's books, especially "120 Nights of Sodom," directly led to the defiling of corpses after they lost their heads to the Guillotine, putting them in extremely lewd sexual positions). Karl Marx's books and teachings also led to the Russian Revolution and the like. Bear in mind that these occurred long before the boob tube came into existence, or heck, even radio. If you're going to truly get rid of the cesspool, I hope you have enough investments and resources to create a Death Star...

"Like art, sex is fraught with symbols."

No, sex is sex. Minds are fraught with symbols - especially minds like Camille Paglia's.

A little CP goes a long way. Like Christopher Hitchens, she's a lefty intellectual who's not afraid to flout the party line when it suits her. I used to read her column sometimes and learned a few things. On the other hand, she takes Madonna very, very seriously. YMMV

There's no point in talking about sex in America, because it's not sex; it's addiction. It's reached a level of sheer lunacy.

It's nice that we're not "hung up" about sex anymore, but I agree - we may have gone a bit too far in the other direction.

There's a story on my local radio station's website about this former Delaware beauty queen who had to give up her title because she made a porn video that got posted on the Web. She's 19 years old. And I'm thinking "Are there ANY 19 year old women who HAVEN'T made a porn video and had it posted on the Web? I mean, WTF?

We've gone from "Sex isn't sinful" to "I want everybody on the planet to watch me having sex!"

What nonsense. I don't chug water right after I've slaked my thirst. And I would say joyous and happy is anxiety-free. Who knows what this nuthatch has been up to, and what would a lesbian know about it anyway? Her liking women doesn't make her a man.

She's an intellectual. Intellectuals have orgasms just like everybody else, but for them the sex isn't really over until they've developed a theory about it.
